Hi guys,

I had our GQ TB42EFI patrol do a major service and when I went to put it in 4WD mode (I have the auto hubs) it made that clicking noise which usually happens when you disengage but it kept doing it. I read that this can happen when it gets over greased and should be lightly oiled, so thought I could resolve this myself and got the allen key out and took the hub off and I noticed part of the auto hub is fixed to the axle . I uploaded a couple of pics to show. Is it possible that when doing wheel bearing it has been put back incorrectly? Have had a few things go wrong/not done well already with this mechanic so don't want to go back there. Any help please would be greatly appreciated as the back of the hubs do not look like what I have researched here and on the net.

The pieces still on the car should just come off mate and are probably stuck there withe grease suction only. see if you can remove them with a pair of pliers.

Clean the whole lot up and repack and test them again. Try and LOCK then in manually and see if they fail then? if so then they are FUBAR and fine some more.

Hi, thanks for your input. The 2 bits on the axle seem to be fixed there as they don't come off. I tried with both as they are like that on the other front wheel too.

G'day Mate,

I think you will find that there is a circlip (with a washer) on the stub axle holding them on.
What you can do (although hard to tell from the pics) is remove those pieces altogether effectively making them manual hubs.

So..take the circlip and washer off, take the auto mechanism off (those pieces still on the stub axle)
Put washer and circlip back on
Put hub back on
Sit back and admire handy work

Of course if you want Auto hubs, you will need to put it back the way it is now

I just did it the other day to mine.

Thanks doka404. I think you are right that a circlip or something is holding the other 2 bits on the axle missing from the back of the hub although I cannot see right now how to get them off. Do you think this is how it was or have they re-assembled it wrong? The pics of auto hubs I see on the net show that those 2 back bits should normally be at the back of the auto hub.

Funny this is that everything I saw had those pieces still attached to the hub when you pulled it off as well .

But I just rebuilt my swivel hubs the other day and when I pulled my hubs off I had exactly the same setup as you. There is defiantly a circlip and a washer holding them on. Well was on mine and so I assume there would be on yours too as it sounds like a similar setup.

I just ditched the auto pieces as i mentioned above..

EDIT have a look at the exploded diagram in the link I posted..shows the circlip and the washer in front of the auto locking mechanism the way it is setup on yours and was on mine

Thanks will study the diagram and do some more reading tonight. I'm glad yours is the same as maybe in a few models they put those pieces on the axle instead of the back of the hub. I cleaned it up and still is clicking continually when I put in in 4WD mode. Clicking sound is coming mainly from passenger front wheel. Never used to do this. Click would only sound once so something is sticking when 4WD is engaged now with auto mode. Cheers

Your right, sorry I forgot, I don't play with auto hubs much. The inner circlip is only used on auto hubs. In fact the same circlip is moved to the outer groove when fitting manual hubs and to the inner groove when running auto hubs.

Cleaned everything up this morning and lightly oiled but clicking noise still continuing in 4WD. Sounds as if it is coming mainly from passenger side front wheel. Got me stumped now. Like having the auto hubs when pulling boat out of ramp.
