View Full Version : compression question - mq petrol/gas

Hi guys,

New around here but could do with some advice. Have an '85 Patrol MQ Petrol & Gas (presume that's the L28 engine) with 300k on the engine.

Was running rough and has stopped starting and I presume it's the valve clearance too tight but haven't had a chance to set it as didn't have the right size socket for to turn the crank, will do this tomorrow though.

That aside I did a quick compression test and it's between 120 and 130psi when cold across 5 cylinders but the last cylinder was 100psi, bumped up to 120psi when a bit of oil was added to the cylinder so obviously it's the rings. Is that enough of an issue to stop the it running completely or would it just make it a bit rough?

I do work on my bikes myself but haven't done a top end on a car before as never had to, is it practical to get the head and barrels off with the engine still in the car? Would I likely have to get the barrels/cylinder relined or can you get oversized pistons and get a hone done? Or might this not even be needed?

Very open ended questions but any feedback appreciated.

Thanks,
Allan
