Hello everyone,

I'm bit of a newbie when it comes to tyres and rims so could use a little help and advice.

Currently I'm in the market for some new rims, as my GQ came with 15x7's and I read that 15x8's are better as the tyres wear more evenly. I currently have a brand new Maxxis 771 Bravo A/T 31x10.50R15LT as a spare tyre on a 15x7 rim, it came with the truck as the spare and looks as if it's never been used and I am a bit on a budget so thought I would stick with the same tyres as I read on another forum that the tyre would work on a 15x8 rim as well. My other tyres are a bit of a mix, two roads up back and two A/T Desert Duelers up front. Some are pretty shot and I don't like the mix and match the previous owner did with the tyres.

I am a little confused about the offset. What offset for the rims would work well for me? I have the stock standard flares and apart from it being lifted slightly (probably 2 inches compared to what my old Maverick was) the GQ is pretty much stock. I am looking currently at buying Dynamic rims as I heard they are pretty good and aren't too expensive. Being in the country too I'm not after anything flashy and the misses would prefer I get new rims rather than second hand ones.

Any help and knowledge you guys could provide would be appreciated. :D

Be weary of your new spare on the back door, if it has not been in the tyre rotation then it is likely to be worse for ware sitting exposed to UV for a long time and not rotating. Ask your local tyre dealer to identify the manufacture date of the tyre as it is clearly stamped into the tyre if you know where to look.

I have had a tyre do a full delamination after not being I rotation and finally needing to use it. Wasn't good at 100km/h towing a trailer with the family on board.

15x 8 in a Neg 13 to neg 22 should be fine for you mate.

Yep, agree with MR, those offsets will be handy if you ever decide to increase the size of your wheels to 33"

I just got new wheels for the GU and found it wasn't that easy to find much with a negative offset about. I was looking for something around that negative 13mm but ended up with 0 offset. At the end of the day talking about 10mm. Not sure what the GQ is like but mine was ok.

Thanks for the info, I simply don't know how long it's been there so checking it would be a good idea. I've had the truck for 12 months and finally got a tyre cover for it. Taking a wild guess I would say it's at least 2 years old probably more. If I find the typre is no good, is there any really advantage going to 16 inch rims over the 15 inch ones? Also any advantage to go to a wide size rim?

Thanks, those where the offsets I had come across when looking up new rims. Seem to be the most common in the price range I am looking at.

I am quite happy with the 31" though to be honest I have considered at a later time possibly going to 33" it all depends on how much 4WDing I get in over the next coupe of years. One I get the truck set up a bit better I should probably look at joining a 4WD club around here.

I would do the 33's now if you're changing tyres....you will thank yourself every time you look at it.....or go 4wding..... LOL

What he said ^^^^^

If your forking out for tyres go for 15 inch 33's

Rim wise there are gazillions of options for 15 x 8 rim with neg 13mm offset will take up to 33 x 10.5 no worries on a GQ.

neg 13mm is often referred to in the industry as Cruiser Offset and is probably the go if you don't have flares
neg 22mm offset gives the vehicle quite a nice wide stance and looks good with flares to keep Constable Plod onside.

Unless you are going extra wide and extra tall tyres (35's etc) I would not go any bigger offset than neg 22mm or any wider than 8 inch rim as you end up in an area of suspension geometry tweaks that can be a bit tiresome.

I also agree going to a 33 now for the win mate. A decent 4x4 tyre will give you upto 100,000kms. That's allot of tyre! Swap out and go a 33 now I reckon. I like 16s as it gives you a little more room around the brakes, especially in the mud. Less likely to have a stone or rock get stuck there .

Tyre wise I'd look at a 33/12.5 or 33/11.5 on a 15" rim or a 285/75r16 on a 16" rim.

Thanks guys I am seriously considering the 33" if I can convince the wife that is. I do believe it would be better in the long run to do it now as I would save money in the long run.

A little update, I got my new tyres and rims the other day. I decided to go 33" A/T on 15x8 rims. Not the best brand tyres out there but were good for my budget and so far I am happy with them. I did all 5 as I needed the spare as well.

Since pictures speak a 1000 words. :D
