Just been trawlin Youtube an came across a topic on how to fix Nissan Patrol steering vibrations and wobbles. The commentator suggests that the fix for 80 to 90 percent of times is the removal of swivel hub shims.
Question is I understood the shims where there to set preload on the swivel hub bearings. I asked my mate around the corner about this and he said he had removed all shims to get rid of the wobbles in his steering after fitting a set of 35's he reckons this did the trick.
Could someone explain ??? I have done quite a few swivel hub rebuilds on cruisers and have never come across this. Is this a Patrol thing?
Cheers
Gary

Hi Gary, this can certainly help but and there is always a but, you need to make sure the preload on the bearings is not excessive, when they come from the factory they have the shims to correctly preload the bearings and as they wear you can remove some but if you replace the bearings don't put too much pressure on otherwise you will cause premature wear on the bearings. Hope that helps.

Yeah I've been told the same thing and I'm going to check mine as the shakes are coming back, I've also noticed diff oil coming out the swivel hub seal which tells me I have a axel seal problem.
The diff oil could have also washed out the grease from the bearing if the cover wasn't replaced.

As above. The shims set tension.
I suggest removing them to test the bearings.
If removing the shims fixes the wobble then it's time to replace the bearings and at that time put shims back in..

Cheers people I thought I had to learn something new silly me.
I have no issues with mine I just came across this video and thought it a bit misinformed so to speak. As Biggqwesty points out the shims set the tension and the vid makes no reference to this just simply saying remove the shims to fix the wobbles vibration. The author even states the shims are just a washer??
Come to think of it I don't think my mate around the corner understands what the shims are there for. I will have a bit of fun with him to see how good he is he he .
