I have a 2014 GU and as Ive just sold my 2001 GU i recon the lhs rear barn door bracket has been extended modified OEM as it seems to open far wider than my 2001 GU, in fact if i apply a bit of pressure when opened its realy not that far off crushing the lhs tail light, is it the tail light creating an optical illusion or could i be right, even when i step back and eye it up it seems to be as good as the pics you see on ebay for selling the brackets before and after shot.

anyone else found similar, Note:: My 2014 was bought brand new so if modded id be very suprised

Im also considering what options I have to make, modify, purchase to mount a 33" spare tyre on the back as per oem bracket, ive read up on the cracks etc, just interested in finding the alternatives if any other than purchashing a rear bar. Ill have a roof rack shortly and dont want to use it unless i have too. Certainly dont want to mount it internally cos i have a dog and me mrs needs a bit of space when travelling in the back

Even considering mounting it with no air in the tyre to reduce weight or just use helium and tie it to the aerial, pity they dont come out with an aerial now LOL..

Sorry couldnt help myself, onto being serious are the oem aluminium rims much lighter than the steel rims, surely the added weight of a 33 " tyre to the oem bracket wouldnt comprimise the SWL of the bracet, has anyone weighed the difference in say oem aluminium vs sunrasia rims

Any feedback appreciated

Hi mate. First up you can buy off set brackets to move the trye over an inch or so. I can incorporate this into the lights I make which will give you an off set and reverse light/ work light option
So that's one option.
As for the weight issue, I know gu's do crack but unsure if that's with larger tyres or stock??

get a rear bar with a tyre mount on it and it won't stuff up your rear doors imo

There was a guy from Vic a few years back that made a single rear wheel holder for the left hand side.
It mounted on the chassis at the rear and only a small cut was made in the rear plastic bumper
to bolt it on. It's name was Karry2 or something similar, He did not make one for the RHS only the left.
I've mounted mine internally with no dramas to date.

As for the door bracket they are slotted for adjustment

tried to find Karry2 but looks like not in business any more,
it was not a rear bar it was just a rear wheel/jerry can holder
I spoke with him years ago and thought he was on a winner as
prices were less than half of what a rear bar costs these days

I have had a 33" tyre on the back door for years .... no problems and I do a fair few trips, including a double Simpson Desert crossing a year ago, where the cheap Chinese Roofrack broke, but the rear door is still fine ...... there are inherent dangers with the extra weight, but doing things like stopping and making sure the rear doors are shut properly if the door open symbol is on, goes a long way to helping control the problem.

I had to put the LHS Rear Door bracket onto my 2011 model, as the door opened to around 70 degress only, so maybe things have finally changed for the new ones ( but I doubt it, as Nissan isn't into putting engineering dollars into the Y61 anymore )

Karry 2 rings a bell actually threedogs, appreciate you checking it out for me:cheers:. I have seen your pic above on other threads but unfortunately trying to convince the cook that we dont need the fridge in the far back only responds with yeah but the kids etc etc and I loose..

I didnt know the brackets were adjustable and in all seriousness Ive done some pretty hard roads in my 2001 GU with the stock wheel on the back, I used it as a way to get onto my roof rack and im 100kg, would be interesting to do a stress test on the door to see how its holding up. All said and done I have held off on the rear bar option because I thought I may as well see how the bumper holds up in my travels, If I damage it then ill probably consider getting one. Thanks

Im glad that a 33" is holding up fine on the spare wheel bracket for you, Pretty much what I would have expected and was hoping for, I agree with everything you've said, respect the gear and it'll respect you.

Maybe with the LHS bracket I am only getting 70% and it is an illusion, mind you I still thinks its better than the 2001, Ill buy one and sit it next to the one in the door, it'll soon tell me.

Cheers

As mentioned you can buy the extension bracket which fits against the door and then the OEM tyre bracket bolts to that. This move the bracket outwards and upwards if need be.

Its fairly common for the rhs door to crack. Reason because the weight of the larger tyre wants to peel off the door skin downwards. Some do it some don't. I think the ones that do it is more so because the door strikers are not adjusted right and there is little movement in the door when shut. so this multiplies the affect. Might not be right but I don't know why some can travel years on harsh roads with a 33 hanging off the back with no issues and some can't.

Have a look in my profile and you will see a link to a crack repair guide I made. As my door wash almost cracked right through both sides of the door. At least you can see where they crack...

I have designed a crane type arrangement that bolts to the roof rack and lifts
a tyre/rim combo with ease. total weight of it is 15kg but that could come down
to just over 10kg with little adjustment in material used.
that's if you want to mount it on the roof

My right side barn door is cracked. Always has a stock size tyre on the back and vehicle only done 87k klms. Personally I think it may be caused by closing the door to hard, but then if you don't give it a decent shove it doesn't close properly.

Mine barn door is cracked too, wheel carrier extension and constant door slamming to get the interior ligth and dasboard warning ligth to go off probably didn't help. Readjusting the latch striker is actually easy and cheaper prevention.

I recently bought a rear door bracket to mount 33's similar to the one in mudski link.
