I recently had a quote for $495+ GST to install a CRAB bar in the rear of my GU patrol with 3 anchor points in similar location to attached photo.

Has anyone had this done recently and if so, how much did it costs? Any ideas on who else could complete this work around Melbourne eastern suburbs so I could get another quote?

Thanks

Hi mate. Why the need for the crab bar? Is it to accommodate 3 child seat re-straints?

there's only 2 restraint points in a GU behind the middle row and 1 in front of the small barn door for the 3rd row, same as the GQ.......... if memory serves correct

Hey hodge the draw system I've got covers the two factory points, so need to replace that and having the 3rd point would be useful if picking up other family or friends kids

Makes sense mate. I completely forgot about draws covering the 2 points. Will have to keep this in mind when I eventually fit draws.

Black widow systems build points into the draws.
Have read it's $20 a point but unsure how old that is..
They have steel draws so unsure who else offers this option

I have a crab bar fitted to my GU. Cost $295 I think from a mob in Perth. I would get some other quotes $495 is a bit rich I reckon basically all your paying for is the certification for the bar.

Its well worth getting it fitted if you need 3 anchor points for the middle row of seats.

Yeh I saw that information on their website, but I'd assume it only applies to black widow draws that have been specifically designed and tested to accept the points

Yep that's exactly what I'm after, just struggling to find anyone else my way that can do it for a reasonable price...

89 GQ has no child restraint points. Didn't come in until later models 90 or 94

Yes.
But if one can do it I can't see how others can't.
One particular workshop I worked with got a bus in to ferry the boys around.
But it had to many seats to be driven on a standard truck licence.
So we pulled a few of the seats and added a baby seat point.
We simply had to add a 150x100 peice of 6mm plate with a nut tacked to the under side and it all got passed.
If we have a 3rd I'm exploring this option before loosing cargo space to a crab bar

The reason i went for the crab bar was because of the 50/50 split fold seats in the middle row of the patrol, you technically cant have a child restraint anchored to the floor in the middle position because the straps can slip down the gap where the seat backs are split. One way to get around that is to add something to the seat back so there is no gap maybe a piece of angle iron or something like that. The other way is to fit a crab bar so that the anchor point is raised up to the same height as the seat backs therefore the straps cant go down the gap.

I reckon having the crab bar actually gives me more luggage space because i don't have the straps from 3 child seats going down to the floor and getting in the way. If you have a cargo barrier the crab bar sit just behind the barrier so you really don't loose any space

That's a good call firm.
Hadn't thought of it that way.
I wonder what's involved in installing them?
Don't need some teenager with and "certification" dealing with my kids lives...

Hey guys. So has anyone actually got a name and number of someone in Vic that installs the crab bars? I am in a desperate situation, and don't really care too much about price. I just need it done. Any help you cpuld give would be awesome!

Try this guy, he gave me a quote a few years ago. Not sure if he is still doing the same work though but worth a shot

I got mine done in an Opposite Lock store. $330 but that was in NSW. But their other stores might be worth a call. Have you looked up baby car seat places? They would know people.

Apparently some people install certified ones in the roof. Might be a better option than the crab bar i reckon

Digging up this old thread as I'm in a similar situation. Installing drawers and need to also have a child seat, is the CRAB bar the only option i have? Or possibly modify the drawers (cut out and box in a section) to allow for the child restraint strap to still go to the factory mounting point in the floor?

There is a brand that has child anchor points installed already but can't remember who. Someone else May remember though

Outback and MSA drawers have the anchor points built into the back.

Am in the same dilemna myself as I fitted an old set of Outback drawers which do not have them.
