View Full Version : Fitting bonnet scoop

Hey guys just wondering if anyone has fitted an intercooler scoop to the gq bonnet. I was supplied a gu scoop with the intercooler kit but it doesn't fit the contours of my bonnet as gu bonnets are pretty much flat. If anyone has fitted one of these or another scoop or has an info that could help I would appreciate it. Thanks

Hi mate and welcome to the forum , can you pop over to the intros and tell us a bit about yourself and your Patrol
just something the forum asks of us all polite and all.
You'll get a better response too.
Winnie and Mudrunner have to wide scoop on their GQ's from memory

As 3dogs mentioned head over and say gday as for scoops.... I need one... anyone got one hanging about not doing anything?
AB

The contour of the gq is quite flat too, they don't mount in the centre though where the indent is.
Never done it myself but should be straight forward. Cut and prime and the scoop bolts from underneath.
Interested to hear from someone who has done it for any pointers??,

doesn't it need a spacer to fill the void from the bonnet contour?

I've seen a lot of people offset the gu ones or even double up each side.
You would need to do something of course if you wanted it centred.

Then why the high temps , if mine gets highish [Towing] I'll flick the auto back
to the lower range, revs are higher and EGTs come down as exhaust gas can escape quicker

As soon as I put the bigger tyres I've been getting higher than normal temps.
Can someone confirm, I've heard that CRD's having higher temp anyway.

Bigger tyres puts more strain on everything, it will cause higher EGTs. And you're right, the CRDs do run hotter than the DI, your temps are not unusual for a CRD but it would be good to bring them down

This is exactly what I get. Any hill climb, or even a slight rise always ups the temps a bit, but come right down once it levels out again. Looking forward to see what your new scoop does with temps. It will do fark all while off-roading, will only notice on the highway.

I always say, throw a EGT gauge on a stock crd, and the temps they get up to would scare most people. Theyre all the same, and designed/built this way. Whether they can handle those temps is another question...

some 285s with a mild AT pattern,or even 265s for better fuel figures
leaving your muddies for your forum trips
No point wearing them out towing a boat

I towed my camper up the Hume past Albury sitting on 110 and a bit more and was all good with power and egt's. Yes I know it's over but towing the camper at 100 to 110 was just out of the power range and any slight incline I would be reaching for 4th, then 3rd. Cops won't care though with the excuses.
A bit of a pain really, as every other road in Vic is 100 and the car hates towing at 100. Maybe need to get some 31's again for the road.

it would be great to put some HWY style 265s on just to see what fuel figures I could get
and how much zippier the patrol would be. I have way more power than my mates 05 diesel extra cab lux even with the trailer/camper on.
But and a big but LOL it would look stupid with the smaller wheels, worth thinking about though
why would cops be concerned??

Finally got a chance to fit the scoop today and was much easier than I first thought.
Took me about 30mins.
Removed the six nuts. Which some are very awkward to get to.
Cleaned and polished the area where the scoop was so the the sticky stuff on the new scoop would adhere properly.
Placed the new scoop back on and replaced all the nuts, which some were very awkward to replaced. Tightened all the nuts and I'm done.
Easy peasy.

With the boat in tow, I think it lowers temps by about 10-20 degrees from what I normally used to see. More 10 than 20.
Temps seem to drop a little quicker but really hard to tell.

I know the scoop was the only thing just fitted, and you had the inter-cooler prior. I just thought the scoop spreading more airflow across more surface of the ARE inter-cooler (which are meant to be good), would have dropped temps a tad more than what you got.
And as mudski said, you will get good results with the manual boost control the dawes and needle valves alone gave me the best results, on top of the exhaust, intercooler etc...
