View Full Version : Rear bar/wheel carrier and camper query

Hi all,

I'm considering a rear bar/wheel/jerry holder for my GU and looking at a number of options. Where I'm stuck is that how the car is used varies.

To date most trips have been with the camper trailer which includes plenty of storage space for gear/fuel/etc. In this 'mode' the current setup works, however having to take take the camper trailer on every trip is overkill. It's great when the family comes along, a mammoth pain in the arse if its just me and limits the tracks/drives I can do. The trailer does work well and I still have access to the rear of the car with the trailer attached.

I'm planning a number of trips with a reduced passenger list where the trailer would simply be a hinderance but still want to be able to carry additional fuel (TB48) and the spare, hence considering a rear bar.

I'm assuming the combination of a rear bar + camper is going to be a pain in the arse... limited to no access to the rear of the car and from what I've seen the swing arms would be a pain to remove to 'change modes'.

Does anybody have any experience/advice here. I do note that this problem could simply be a fabrication in my mind, so if I'm talking complete crap let me know.

Cheers

Make sure the rear bar is rated to use stabilizer bars when towing some big name rear bars are not.
Anything that gets the weight off the back door the better they will crack over time and hinges sink.
A good rear bar will protect your rear end plus give you somewhere to carry heavier items like the spare wheel/tyre or a jerry
can full of fuel, leaving a roof rack free for some lighter gear

heaps of different options available from cheap to expensive, i have a rear bar from sports range 4x4 in perth and it is a cheapy at $1200 but i have had minimal trouble with it and have recently done the simpson with two spares on it and had no troubles at all, however others have had problems with theirs so its a bit of pot luck with the cheap ones i think.
