Greetings,

I am a new member. We have been living in residential for a few years, and are both looking forward to getting back out into the sticks, this time being Coolgardie, and taking up weekend camping with the kids. I admit to not having a great knowledge of the offroad parts of Coolgardie and would appreciate any advice on good places to go.

Regards,

Paul.

I've just finished working 2 years at Southern Cross. You're in a great area.

Try this link for a 4wd club in Kalgoorlie. http://www.goldencity.com.au/eg4wd/meetings.html

G'day Paul, again.

I don't know how much you know about the area, so I'll tell you a bit about what I know.

> Coolgardie is on Great Eastern Highway and is the main thoroughfare to the eastern states. You turn at Coolgardie, head south to Norseman, turn left and keep driving and driving and driving. There are many vehicles that use this road - including 36.5m long road trains (truck and 2 trailers) and oversized loads with up to two pilot vehicles and a police escort. Lots of these loads carry mining equipment and care needs to be taken when overtaking them. Pilots are very good from what I've seen. If you've got a UHF CB, I suggest you leave it on Channel 40 for all the 'goss'.
> It's only about 40km to the City of Kalgoorlie - only one of 4 regional WA cities. (others being Bunbury, Albany and Geraldton).
> Television receiption....WIN (combination of 9 & 10 & their own programs) and GWN (channel 7 and their own programming) AND whatever pay tv channels you want to subscribe to.
> 2 x Roadhouses. I know at least one of them is 24/7
> Yor nearest beach is probably Esperance, on the south coast - about 370 km away http://rac.com.au/Travel/Self-drive-holidays/RAC-Journey-planner.aspx
> 4wd clubs.... Esperance http://www.westcoast4x4.com.au/content/about.html Kalgoorlie http://www.goldencity.com.au/eg4wd/
> A bit of local knowledge... http://staging-drivewa.indepth.com.au/poi/1487/coolgardie.html
> The 'Prospector' train runs almost daily from Kalgoorlie to Perth & return and has an onboard cafe and you can watch movies. You can even plug your laptop into the wall and 'work away' Here's the timetable http://www.transwa.wa.gov.au/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=AaibwqvGh5A%3D&tabid=45&mid=373 It picks up and drops off at East Perth Train Station (Off Lord St). On some sections of track, it travels at 160kmh.

> I'm not too sure about the off road areas around Coolgardie, but I'm sure if you combine local knowledge with the Eastern Goldfields 4wd Club (in Kal), you'll have a ball. Jeez I miss Southern Cross. lol

Hope this helps.

Take care out there.
