Hey

Been looking to get into a bit of beach camping, fishing & kayaking. Along with a bit of touring to reach such destinations.

I have wanted a GQ / GU patrol for a long time I could not justify the price tag, I finally gave in as I think the current crop of 4x4s are just not built to last.

Here is my 4.2 2006 Ex Telstra DX ute, it has the obieco canopy on the back,

I have had this car only a week and it truly is a blank canvas as far as patrols go, which is great because I love making things my own, the car received
a full service second night of ownership including greasing and the only thing suspect was the gearbox oil was a bit watery I suspect overdue for servicing.

I though it might have a rear main seal leak was pretty happy to find it was a crack in the egr pipe, easy fix.

Removed the daytime running lights and associated wiring as they were buzzing every few trips

So far my plans for the patrol are

New shocks & bushes,
New tyres (staying with the bfg AT I think they will be perfect)
3" exhaust
Blanked EGR
Stereo
Reverse camera
Might upgrade to 3" lift with associated bits that go with it.
Roof rack
Will most likely run a cav filter on it as well as the factory unit.

Deck the back out for sleeping, tossing up whether to go raised floor / draw setup with a bed on top or just fit out one side of it with draws and leave the bed on the floor.

She is a bit clunky underneath don't think its seen much unsealed action recently, wont take long to figure it out though.

Anyway here she is, will keep you updated as the modifications progress.

Shes got a few love taps here and there but the under body is very good,

turns out my sub tank was faulting and the light was running on the dash full time, I thought it meant that the car was running on the sub tank, commented to my boss how the needle barely moved all weekend as I left work
(the sub tank had half a tank whereas the main was on E)

Got over the gateway bridge and she started coasting.. deary me. Anyway the light on the sub tank switch wouldn't work so I got on the forum and it said potential bad earth, removed the battery cable and replaced and got the car transferring fuel, halfway home the transfer stopped (light went out) but I had enough to get home safely. Just ran an earth from the chassis to the body and it seems to be rectified, also learnt my lesson that the sub tank is just there to fill the main tank not run independently. (I think)

Mods will come when I sell my current daily. First up dual battery, so I can run everything else I install off it.

Cheers.

G'day mate and welcome to the Podologist chapter of the Forum. lol.

I've added you as another 'podder', to my signature.

There are so many options available with a blank canvas. Mine was blank and is still reasonably blank.

Apparently the biggest issue with our vehicles is the weight. I've kept mine as light as I can. If I go camping overnight, I'll either swag it in the back, or take our double bed, high density foam matress. I prefer sleeping between the sheets and blankets rather than a swag. lol.

I have an annex and awning that hangs off the side. Great for long term, but a PITA, for anything less than a week. I absolutely love it, but it takes ages to set up.

Because I love my bed so much, and like staying dry when it rains, I use plastic boxes to store everything. A bit time consuming, but they go straight out and straight back in, and keeps stuff dry. I put the mattress on top of them and just pull them all out at night, make the bed before it gets too late, and sleep like a baby. lol

I have noticed that sometimes condensation forms in the pod at night. I suggest also that you make up a fly/mozzie net for your pod to get a better night's sleep. Nothing worse than hearing Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz . It wakes me up.

Take care and looking forward to see your build.

Rossco

Best of the best! Mine looked like that once. :)
Take your time with deciding how to proceed. It’s worth it to end up with what really suits you.

Exactly.

It took me a couple of years researching this and other forums to get what I wanted. Once my aluminium shelves go up in the pod, I'll be adding my toys - with pics. lol

Yeah I am going to have a few test runs up the beach with a bed before I commit to anything drastic, I am not accommodating anybody but myself right now so I can definitely tough it out with minimum luxury and slowly keep adding to it. I plan on removing the hot water system as it does not suit my needs and independently wiring the rear control panel off a second battery and cleaning up the wiring (which is in very good condition IMO).

I love electrical work so there will be no shortage of wiring jobs, some of the other threads are top notch and it will be a challenge to maintain the standard.

Can anybody tell me as mine is broken, the switch / light installed in the dash which connects to the circuit breaker that has the piezo buzzer on it.. is that a pilot light or an on/off switch, I wired it up as a switch which will turn the lights off in the canopy, but I have a feeling its actually meant to be a pilot light? Any input.

thanks.

I sold the Handiwash unit out of mine about 3 years ago. Got $152.50 for it on ebay.
Not sure about your light/buzzer. I have one to the right of the steering wheel, red light & buzzer. Shines & sounds if you switch on ignition without having either of the pod doors shut properly. I disconnected mine at one point because the switches on the pod door were adjusted badly & it would sound when going around corners. After driving off with a pod door open once, I reconnected the alarm & adjusted the door switches. There may be slight differences between your Obeico & my Rosscos though.

Hi mate its the round hole decent size, its irregular size for most switches so I think its a pilot light, the power in the pod was not working and i traced it back to the broken light/switch under the dash. Will play around with it further once I get a new pilot light, I guess having a warning alarm would be good as long as it did not sound everytime the door was open? What triggers the alarm is it ignition or just door open in general.

Mine has a switch like this on each pod door. The sliding bar operated by the door handle pushes the switch up. Ignition needs to be on & door open for it to sound.

Excellent I suspect mine has similar setup, will search for the switches on the weekend.

Cheers.
