Hey, recently started having problems with my 2005 Patrol, Every now and then something odd happens, car feels a bit jerky and it suddenly loses all power until i back off the accelerator, then it lets me limp home, there's also a high pitched sound from time ti time.

anyone have any ideas?

On my patrol, I get that loss of power when going uphill with a loaded up patrol, apparently its an overboost issue.

Hi mate the high pitched noise could be a split egr pipe, LHS of motor.
Also sounds a bit like you're going into overboost as well.
Might be time to fit a dawes and needle valve to control boost.
Chaz Yellowfoot [Guru] has written plenty on the subject as well as Rumjas[Guru2]
have a search to see what you come up with.

also try disconnecting the battery for 1/2 an hour to re-set computer

pm mudski he does all that boost stuff and as far as a split egr pipe I just repaired mine by blocking it at the back of exhaust pipe tricky little bugger as well.

As TD has said, it could be the EGR Pipe - split or warped where it meets the block.

Also check all intercooler piping for loose clamps or splits, and check the intercooler itself for signs of oil weeping through splits in the cooler itself, or the crimp joins to the tanks.

It cant be too bad if it isnt doing it all the time.

Thanks guys,
A local mechanic looked it over yesterday afternoon and said it was definitely over boosting but he couldn't work out why, so he said i needed a new engine.

Friend of mine recommended another mechanic who claims to know how to fix this. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

What a load of bull, IMO
Get yourself a manual boost controller ,in other words fit a NADS set up new engine my foot.
As suggested PM mudski and have a chat, you may be surprised.

Haha! New engine! Lol. Dont go back to him bud. A split egr pipe may not give you over boost issues, but it may...
Worth checking out though. Check all the IC hoses and clamps. Make sure the entire intake system from turbo to intake is sealed and no leaks.
Fitting the dawes and needle valve will certainly fix the overboost issues if everything else is good. Even is everything is good its a worthy investment to fit these valves anyway.

i have fitted Dawes valves to these for similar problems. I normally fit boost control valves as well and set boost around 18psi. I think instructions said 16psi from memory but they lagged a bit.

16 psi is only a general rule of thumb. Plus there is no point really only fitting the dawes alone. That's only doing half the job, throw a needle valve in and then you get full control of your turbo. Not sharing with the ECU.

Hey,
So I took my Patrol to a Mechanic out at Chambers Flat on my friends recommendation, It was an over boost issue and he fixed it, took him a day to do it and it runs better than new, I've just gotten home with it and it's perfect,

If anyone wants this guys number PM me or i can post it here or something, dunno what the protocol is in these situations.

Okay so Update: Father in laws Ford Fairlane broke down in Gatton yesterday morning on his way to town, I managed to get it onto a trailer and tow it back up the Toowoomba range with the Patrol, so i think that's an adequate stress test, didn't miss a beat.

So i'll go ahead and share this guys details with you all, anyone in Brisbane who needs a decent Mechanic for their Patrols, his name is Sebastian, his number is 0415 448 534.

Once again, thanks for all your help guys.
