View Full Version : Big box thing attached to intake pipe on 4.5 GU???

What on earth does it do and can I get rid of it to make room.
A quick search found no results apart from something to do with lowering induction noise.

There are 2 of them, one is under the elbow that comes from the inner guard and the other is after the MAF. They reduce intake noise.
I replaced my TB45E airbox with a TD42 box so that got rid of the first one and I find it a little noisier as the revs rise..
I've seen an installation where it was replaced with a stainless pipe. There's a pic here in this Autospeed article:

You can take it out but as said it reduces noise so your engine noise will increase.
Make sure you plug/cap the hole it leaves though so you don't suck dirty air or water

Thanks guys. Noise isn't an issue because my other car is a loud vy sv8 one tonner.
My way of thinking is the less resistance in the intake, the better so ill fab up something.
