I am toying with the idea of buying a GU and swapping out the TD42 from our GQ.

Has anyone here done this? Where there any major problems?

Was it worth it?

What would an approximate cost be to finish the project not including buying the GU? I think $2000 thoughts.

We would be keeping the car long term, but would it be safe to say finished with winch, lift and snorkel it would be worth $10000?
(The Mrs likes figures)

Please add your thoughts, positives and negatives.

easily worth that and the prices for parts on a gq are pretty solid as well

I like the idea but need it to pass emissions for roady which would be the tricky part (using the older GQ donk in the GU).....

Depending on what year GQ he has and what GU he's looking at. There's no EGR for a start. I haven't really seen what sort of emission controls there are on the early TD's tbh. But something that needs to be looked into.
Other than that the GU is definitely a comfy car. Slightly larger inside too. Good for the family to fit in.
If you are thinking of auto too, speak to Mick (megomonster) first. I went shotgun with him on the weekend and his in first low was picking up speed down the hills, on the brakes hard down some big hills. Mine, I could be in first low and get out of the car and walk beside it.

I will try and find out about emissions. I would keep it manual, I just think it has the edge over auto out in the bush.

The local mechanic here has done exactly this to his gu patrol and he reckons it has transformed the car. Well worth it. He converted from a tb45 to a td42.

Speak to a local engineer who deals with vehicle mods. He should be able to put you on the right track.

The GU is a step up for sure. I must get rid of that RX sitting in my paddock!

Errrr.... Yes officer I have one of those.
I don't think you need them on old diesels?
I did not need one on my last gq because it was on gas

Hahaha, I would like to see that in any patrol without reduction gears
