OK all had a wee incident with skippy last night in my lancer ( yes i know the one night i dont take the patrol ) anyway I was travelling through an area where there were lots of roos I knew they were there and was travelling at 30 - 40 kms in the middle of the road when bugger me dead this silly roo jumped out of the bush and head butted my passenger door!!! Just wondering if those whistle things people seem to stick on the front of their cars really work??? ANY Ideas???
Cheers

I'm a roo hitting expert....100% they do not work.

In fact I think the high pitch noise actually attracts them. I did hear that Nissan or Toyota did a test on the whistler and they in fact were intruiged by the sound and came towards it but again, just a story, can't be sure it was true.

All I do now is keep the speed very low, scan the sides of roads and keep the high beams off in bad areas.

They get scared easy and seem to jump towards the lights...

I have hit 3 roos with high beams and none on low beams.

Unpredictable buggers!!!

I drive to Griffith often and the Roos the other side of Echuca are thick as flies and seem to be dazzled by High Beams. I sit in the middle of the Road with lights on Low Beam and sometimes turn them off if it is a Moonlit night.

For sure Bob, I have hit 3 in the last 2 years with a commodore wagon which have fairly decent headlights for stock.

My brother has a GU ute with factory lights and they are fairly poor lighting on low beam and has never ever hit one in this area and has been here for over 5 years.

Those whistler things suck.

They are designed on the theory the Roo's won't ike the sound so they panic and hop away. Well, that does happen, all except the away bit. When Roos panic they hop evrey bl00dy direction and the ones that weren't dazzled that you would have missed come into the equation

The other big difference is that other animals with more brains now start running around as well. A Family member had an interest in a Trucking Company in the NT which used to run express freight up and down the Stuart with 3 Road Trains. They used to collect a steer about once or twice a year and a heap of Roo's, wallaby's etc.

They put those whistlers on and within 3 months had belted a 1/2 dozen steers and had to hire a Prime Mover to keep the run going when all 3 hit cows within 48 hours. Ripped the Whistlers off and no further hassles. Theory was the cows that would normally graze within metres of the road and ignore the traffic were sh1tt1n' 'emselves and running out at the last second.

might be worth fitting some foglights that shine well to the side, based on what I've read here - plus would perhaps help off road in tight corners etc.

I can hear cars on the road when on farms a k from the road. Surely roos have better hearing than me and can also hear them. They can also hear the shu roos (and two of my country cousins have them, but the rest don't believe in them) - I can see shu roos etc working when the sound is unfamiliar and thus scares the roos. However .......

I've been very lucky so far and havn't hit one yet. Plenty of cars infront and behind me have but I have escaped.
You watch..I'll hit one tomorrow now...lol

I tend to slow down early morning or evenings and am very weary of them tho....

Never had the whistles, don't believe in them. I use roo telepathy to keep them away. Takes a bit of training but it works pretty well and have only hit one roo since I started doing it. I think I was using emu telepathy at the time so no wonder I hit it. LOL!

what ever it is your taking sir
share..........please we all want some............... lmao

ROFLMAO... I am another who found it pretty disturbing that the whole family were fluent in "Macropodian" and could have a conversation with the furball.

The sum total of my communication with Roo's was "Bang" and "Yummmm"

well if ya see a Macrapod on the side of road, slow a little and be aware that they will hop along beside you and the turn 90 degrees in front of you B4 you know it. Don't hoot horn or anything silly as they know something is there, but only they can work out if they need to stay or flee.

It's usually the ones you don't see, or don't see till it's too late that cause the damage I suspect ...

So that leads me to think a Panel Beater invented those whistles then. One way to create work.
