Hello everyone, new dude here in Perth, WA. Been reading these forums for a while, awesome advice and technical know how.
Ok be gentle with me and don't laugh too much, but here's my issue...

Just bought a 2003 Patrol with the ZD30 in it, 154K on the clock for $8K. It's in mint condition for it's age, looks brand new inside and out. Under the bonnet it's as clean as a whistle, No oil leaks anywhere as far as I can see. The older guy I bought it from had it since 2007 and was very honest and upfront when I went to see it, he told me it had lost power and was blowing black smoke, but was now too big for him to drive at his age.
Anyway, I bought it... Power is horrendous, slow down to go around a corner, put foot on accelerator, no power just black smoke. Also a horrendous squealing/whistling noise intermittently. Made it home, got the torch out and went hunting under the bonnet... Took about 30sec to discover black soot on the engine block behind the EGR valve and alloy pipe (probably the source of the whistling noise too) also soot at the base of the actuator arm on the turbo. (EEEEK)
Silly me takes it into Nissan, after diagnostics they told me no air/vacuum leaks (good) loss of boost pressure traced back to EGR valve which requires attention before they can investigate further. Hope you're all sitting down, they quoted me $2,159 to replace the EGR valve & gaskets. After picking myself up off the floor, I told them to put it back together, went and picked it up and they gave me a piece of paper which I had to pay $410 for... HELP!
Is the lack of boost pressure due to the stuffed EGR valve?
Any advice, reputable repairers in Perth? Hope I haven't bought a lemon!

Andy, Perth.

firstly pm mudski and buy a egr blocking plate get rid of the egr altogether its not good for anything, that's a good place to start. at a guess your fuel intake is probably choked with the crap your egr has fed your motor so you may have to have that cleaned. don't panic and spend big dollars chasing a small problem first things first and the problem will be figured out.

Just on black smoke no power remove the engine cover and check rear rh hose on the intercooler , the blue in my pic.
The Di's tend to blow them off, easy fix

Reading further your EGR pipe sounds like its split too,

Its not a lemon its a ZD30 they need to be NADS for longevity

Try PatrolApart ( Patrol Parts tab up the top )for a new EGR Valve, as it is most likely split, and they aren't easily repairable.

Hi all just an update regarding the black smoke & loss of power.... Yup, EGR pipe was warped & had blown the gasket out presumably causing the high pitch 'whistling' noise on acceleration and loss of boost pressure, hence the unburnt fuel.
Took it to the guys at Robson Brothers 4WD repairs in Welshpool for repairs & Dawes valve etc... Good as new (almost), power is back & no more smoke!
Thanks to everyone who offered advice, much appreciated.

While I'm here, does anyone know where I would acquire the mesh/debris filter that sits in the bonnet scoop over the intercooler? A wreckers maybe?

Not sure its an OE part, I have the larger scoop and fitted some mesh in the front to stop rocks entering the gap .
I removed it for now until I can find something with a better air flow rate.
