When I bought the patrol I didn't know the winch was dead. I had taken it off and had to cut off the wire, te barrel doesn't spin and I have her to try take it apart as I don't know what I am doing. It's a warn xd9000, would I be better off getting the winch reconditioned or getting a new runva 11xp?

A new Runva will cost about $700 for the 11000kg model I think.
Nothing wrong with your xd9000 get it serviced and you get great use from it
edit service and sell the 9.5 to finance the runva.
Just read an interesting article about wire rope on Warn winches acts as a heat sink.
Food for thought

XD9000 is a good winch. If it's just a basic rebuild and regrease it won't cost much. Unless there is issues with it or broken bits or gears...

If you are mechanically minded, it is fairly easy to pull a winch apart James ..... You will then understand how it works and also be able to tell if it is that far gone that it is beyond help.
Take some photos assist in putting it back together, and then strip, clean, grease, and re-assemble.
Give it a go, you don't have much to lose....

A synthetic winch rope will be a heat sink on any and every low mount winch with an internal drum brake (read Most low mount winches)
Certainly strip the XD9 and have a look at it mate. If it's beyond you or you find you need a new motor then it is fast becoming more economical to go for a brand new Runva with a warranty.
You really need to strip the winch and see what's wrong with it and how cordoded it is.
When you get a winch sorted then the article that 3dogs has referenced will discuss the Heat buildup from the internal drum brake and the need to avoid winching Out if you can. You can winch out when needed but it applies the brake and then operated the winch through the engaged brake and this causes heat build up very quickly of the drum the the rope is wrapped around. This will effect the rope and should be avoided where possible. Freespool lever is your friend.
