Are you doing a simple hub swap, or have you started with a swivel hub rebuild.
It sounds like you are putting stuff together, and don't have enough room to fit the copper washer, steel washer, and circlip on the end of the cv?

Should be straight off and straight on. I think from memory you have to have it locked when you remove the auto. I think.

Assuming you have it assembled correctly I have to grab the axle with some vise grips and pull it out a bit further to get my clips on.Some other diffs I have done have a thread in the axle to fit a bolt to make it easier, good luck.

The auto hub comes off with 6x Allen key bolts. Remove that and it should come straight off.
If replacing it with a manual hub, merely bolt it on in place. The avm hubs come in two pieces, same number of Allen key bolts (shorter though), and six smaller security screws.
No need to touch anything on the axle for this swap.

If they are not AVM hubs get those egg rings to strengthen the hub. I just removed the plate out of my auto hubs so they are full manual now. Better than the AVM hubs I had that once the small screws on the out side filled up with dirt there was no way to undo them. So I had to destroy the hub. Besides I did find it annoying to undo all those screws and then the bolts just to take them off.
