Hi all,
Had some overheating issues with my 2000 GU 3litre diesel Patrol. Started with the cheapest thing to replace, radiator cap, thermostat, checked and flushed radiator, so now we are at the water pump stage. Have managed to remove all nuts and bolts bar one nut. It sits directly under the pulley wheel. (ok am female and my son is directing me here ). Not enough room to get a 1/2 inch socket in, or a shifter for that matter and can't use this as we are worried about destroying the nut. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I just want my patrol back on the road. Don't want to be relying on my kids to get me places....arggghhhh
Thanks
Tish :)

Pulley/viscous fan clutch is pressed on and can't be removed on 2000 models. You'll need flat combination spanner.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Drain coolant from radiator and cylinder block.
2. Remove radiator upper hose.
3. Remove radiator shroud.
4. Remove cooling fan.
5. Remove drive belt.
6. Remove insulator.
7. Remove vacuum pipe.
8. Remove TDC sensor.
9. Remove fan coupling with water pump.
10. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Anyway it is rarely a coolant pump failure when engine is overheating. More than likely it is viscous fan coupling or radiator cores blocked both or either external or internal. The only way to check radiator for internal blockage is to remove it and send to specialist.

You can check the viscous coupling yourself, with engine cold there should be a fair resistance when you are trying to turn/spin it with engine stationary. If not and it feels very loose/spins easily than the viscous coupling clutch is faulty, usually the silicon fluid leaks out which can be indicated by wet dusty patch around it (coupling).

Normally you'd need to replace entire assembly (coolant pump/fan coupling).

Cheers
