View Full Version : Custom rear bar without quarter chop

Parksy

Hi all

I was wondering if anyone has seen or done a custom bar for a gq patrol without the rear quarter chop? I have some ideas floating in my head of two 50mm tubes ontop of each other running the entire length of the rear, with a couple of flat sections of steel for mounting of some flat LEDs. The fwd section will have a cut out to accommodate the chassis rails so it doesn't stick out too far. Will try and source some plastic caps to plug the ends of the tubes. How does this sound? What I have pictured in my head seems ok, but will probably look retarded in person so I'm keen to hear some opinions.

Thanks all.

Andy

This is roughly what I have in mind. The bottom tube is slightly shorter to match the contour of the quarter panel.

First time welding but I think I eventually got the hang of it. Must say I do enjoy welding. Anyway the flat section will be used to support some flat led indicator and brake lights. Have got plastic caps for the ends of the tubes. Will be painted black. Will see how it looks when fitted and modify it to suit. Might need to angle the tips forward to suit the body.
But early days for now.

Don't forget to design a step in to it mate. You will regret it otherwise...

Ask BA for a photo of the one he made. He used a piece of angle to form the step.

What thickness is the tube ? The tjm brush bar/ step I had was 3mm and bent with a good hit

I've seen jonos bar work and I think it looks excellent! The tubes are also 3mm thick but I'm not concerned about them bending. My main goal is to get rid of the stock setup as the rubber blocks are cracked and I want the back end a little more customised than stock.

black thick walled steam pipe would work and could even be made into air tanks as well.
45s , 90s and end caps available off the shelf

I have to agree with the step idea parksy. my last gq I did the tube design and left out the step was a rear prick to get in and out of the back. following with great interest as I to would like to do one without quarter chop

Alright, I've made some mounts and welded them on and bolted it to the rear to see how it looks. Once i've cleaned up the welds and painted it black, I think it will look ok. My only issue are the sides, as there is a lot of vacant space that i'm not fond of. So if anyone has any tips and ideas on what I should do here, please let me know.
I've had issues coming up with a step idea, so the actual bar will be the step. I plan on running a flat section of steel on the top section in the centre, to make a box section that will reinforce the mounts and rear chassis.
Please let me know what you think and be honest.

Forgot to mention my idea about the ends is to cut about 1"-2" off the ends of the tubes at an angle, and weld on some more tube, maybe 2"-3", so that they point forward at a slight angle. Just to help enclose the sides.

Funny you should say that, was just about to say the same thing......... Unsure what your going to to about mounting the rear lights though, might look a bit odd just sitting on those plates

Anyway, took a while but finally found a photo of Rusty's rear bar

Are you incorporating rear tow points, minimum 10mm flat with 20mm material around the hole.
In line with the chassis rails

Looks pretty good Parksy. That bar clunk posed up is rather good too.
Was thinking; how would it go if your tended and bent the pipe around the sides to give a bit of rear sill protection too.....?

Rusty's rear bar looks excellent! Has given me ideas. Won't be making any tow points, but thanks for the guidelines 3d. Helps for next time.

Have thought about getting some pipe bent and using that for the ends. Is pipe easily bent when heated with a blow torch? Will it retain its shape, or is there a bit of an art form to doing it?

I don't think i'll be putting any lights on the bar anymore. I'll convert my current setup to the old school 3 coloured lights, and chuck some red reflectors on the plates, just to pretty it up a little.

Sorry Parksy, I was meaning to put up a couple more photos of Rustys bar but thought you may have nee more interested in what was done for the ends.
As yours is a series 2 you may need to put rear lights on the bar due to the ADR requirements

ADRs, that's an awkward subject. My understanding is that the tail lights should be visible at a 45 degree angle, hence why they moved the tail lights to the bumpers. But then this subject is quite difficult for a cop to defect as 1 year before this, the series 1 style lights was factory...

More progress. Getting solid now. 1/4" plate ontop to reinforce the mounts and add a step, though a little high. Will need to clean up the welds as there is a lot of splatter from the gas less mig.

New led lights that I'll chuck on the bar. Will add a metal frame around them so they're not vulnerable to knocks from behind.

Tacked on a couple of short angled tubes onto the end to hug the quarters. Also tacked on another mounting point in the center. Will weld it all when time permits and it will never fall off. Will clean up the rough edges with an angle grinder, sort out the light mounts then make it black. Looking forward.

As I said earlier you can buy elbows to suit either long radius or short.
even cutting one elbow in half maybe enough to protect the rear corners
like you suggested earlier. then its only one weld instead of two.
