I'm gobsmacked all though we won't stay more than a day in a CP again wife wants to upgrade the CSU to a Eco-Tourer or CT and she wants an auto which means....a 4.8? Wants to keep touring. Other than the negligent caravaners that seem to think the camping/ct area is for letting there dogs piddle and crap in and the few parks with the treadies that take over we enjoyed the trip so far::

Out of curiosity , what would be your choice of auto , for towing duties ?

The 3 options I would consider would be the nissan 4sp which is bolted to the 4.2 and 4.5 petrols, the auto from a zd30 and an Allison.

Now for ease of parts and conversion the first option with the auto from the 4.2 or 4.5 petrol is a good one and the auto can be beefed up to suit your desired needs. Even in standard trim they arent that bad.

But for an all out job that would be awesome my pick would be the Allison. They are a very tuff and reliable box, can be beefed up well beyond what any 4.2 is gonna throw at it and their operation would also be a decision winner.

Not just the $$, haven't you got to shorten driveshafts, move the transmission support crossmember etc. etc. Fabulous tranny, but a much bigger job and the beefed up Nissan Auto is pretty much bullet proof isn't it?

Yeah an allison conversion is around the 11k mark but it would be a good thing thats for sure.

Transmission cross member stays in place and is just modified to suit. I am not 100% on the driveshafts but I dont believe they need to be changed. The Allisons length isnt that much different to the nissan transmissions.

Sorry mate, I was on my ancient iPhone, trying to say to much on only one bottle of wine whilst sitting at the picnic table ... in my shorts and tee shirt ;)

Actually, I have a 6.7 Cummins mated to a 6spd Allison, wrong side of the road but it really does make towing easy. Problem there is SHE WON'T drive it in the LHD world either unless I was bleeding heavily.
