I am planning on buying some 17”X 8” steel wheels with a -13 offset. I am looking at running the tallest tyre that I can which in my case is 34.37”. This is based on my understanding of information in the VSB 14 that allows a plus 50mm increase in diameter.
Looking around at mud terrain tyres those in 305/70/R17 size would give me a 34” tyre. The vehicle a 2001 GU currently has a 2” OME lift so I would be interested to know what issues I may encounter running these larger tyres? In particular are they likely to rub or mess with the steering or other components
I understand that I may need to make adjustments to the mud flap brackets.
Sorry if I missed the answer to this in another post but I couldn’t find much on the 305s on the site.

FYI 305mm is about 12" so this tyre is slightly smaller than a 35X12 or 35x12.5

Cheers

I run 305's on a 16" steel rim neg 13 offset with a 2" (borrowed) lift on a GU8. I had to take front mudflaps off but that's it. No rubbing, nothing. But in Victoria, I think we can only go up 20mm in tyre size. So I'm a bad boy.
What brand of tyre you looking at, as the BFG Km2 in that size is only 33.9"

Thanks for the info. 305s on 17" are over an inch taller than on 16" rims

Maxis MT-762 Big Horn
305/70R16 834mm Overall diameter (32.83")
305/70R17 864mm Overall diameter (34.01")

BFG KM2
305/70R16 841mm Overall diameter (33.11")
305/70R17 861mm Overall diameter (33.9") ** these are not available in Australian according to Jax Tyres.

So a couple of questions:
The 305s on 17" rims won't come in any more than the 16" ones but they will get half an inch or so nearer the guards/steering/etc so based on yours do you reckon these slight bigger tyres will still fit?
I assuming that you can make adjustments/replacements to the mudflaps so that you have still got some?

Cheers

I think you would use the 305/65R17's.
If I put castor correction of some sort on, it will move the diff slightly forward giving me more room that I have now. When I get home I'll take a photo.

Turned wheel has about 1" clearance.

Another size you could try and find is a 285/75R17, which is just over 34" tall, also just a question what does your tyre placard say?

In order to make them fit, I would say being a ute the rear is ok (or easily modified) but for the front you will need to space the diff forward (with radius arm spacers or similar) to get the clearance from the rear of the wheel arch at full lock, or just trim the guard..

Ok thanks for the info. The 305/65R17 = 32.6X12.01R17" wheras the 305/70R17 = 34.01 and I am trying to get the tallest tyre that I can. So based on your photoes and assuming the tyre is 1" taller than there will only be about 1/2" clearance left. Difficult to say whether this will be enough?

Thanks for the info, I have a wagon. Who makes the 34" inch tyre (I don't want simmex jungle trekkers)?
Regards your question, I going to get the vehicle engineered and so I will be complying with regulations as listed in the VSB and any relevant ADRs. The VSB NCOP11 Section LS Suspension and Steering V2 01Jan2011 states “The overall diameter … must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.” So the base line I am using is what is listed in the owners Manual (Publication no: OM0E-0Y61G0), which lists amongst others a 245/85R16 (32.4”). I will also eventual will be getting a bigger lift so in any event the vehicle will need to be engineered.

But don't forget I have NOT done any castor correction.

Sorry I must of just made it up in my head you had a ute..

For the tallest tire possible if you are really getting down to it you will need to measure the exact tire size physically, while it may be say a 34x11.5x16LT Jungle trekker I know for a fact that they measure at just on 35" tall. Also something like a Nitto Trail grappler in 295/70R16 actually measures at just over 34" when it really should only be 33.5"ish. But to be legal it is what is written on the side that counts :-)

I was going off the "Overall Diameter" measurement as listed on the tyre manufactures web site as I know that there can be a quite a difference between manufactures so not all 33” tyres are the same height.
I am looking at the Nitto web site and they list the Trail Grappler Mud Terrain Light Truck Tire
LT295/70R17= 33.54” Overall Diameter
I like the width and it’s a bit taller on the 17” rim. I will get some prices on these and King steel wheels.

Cheers

35's and 315's will fit on a gu without touching with only the removal of the factory mud flaps.

Is that with a 2 inch lift or higher

I believe some one here had 35's on his GU with no lift and wasn't rubbing but I think he put them on when getting a 4" lift put on and never went bush with them.
I tried looking the thread/post but couldn't find it.

Yeah it is easier with a 2" lift but as mego has stated people have put them on with no lift without having to cut guards.

Can't be 100% sure but I think it was Nowoolies.

Nah nowoolies had a 2" lift and pretty sure he was running 33 equivalents, bought them the same time as me but was a while ago. Unless he's running something different since then

Spoke to the technical department at RMS (NSW based) and they said I unless I go via a Certifier than I can only go 7% bigger than what is written on the tyre placard.
