Hi all

My question is will the GU 3lt handle a load of 6 people, 4 people over 13 and 2 toddlers, towing a 1600kg fully loaded van.
I am looking at buying a used patrol and my misses wants economy around town but to be able to tow this load in our holidays. We go in the sand with our triton now and expect the same with patrol (not towing anything) when go on holidays, will the patrol handle it?
Not to I worried about engine as I know this site has all the right mods for the engine- boost gauge etc.

Before you buy, put one of the teenagers in the back and see how long it will be comfortable for.

Also the toddlers will require baby seat attachments from now until they are about 6-7. Having these anchor points limits them to the middle seat.

Jump over to the intros and say g'day mate something we ask all new members to do, cheers, you'll get a better response that way

You will need to retain the third row seats for six--that means you cannot fit drawers. I had an anchor point (ADR ok) on front of my outback drawers, off to LHS

I had my son in the back who was 18 at the time 5'10 in height with my 2 younger daughters Sydney to towoomba and then on to agnes waters next day no worries all done.

Mate of mine was able to do a 12hour trip with 4.5T trailer behind him,
Only mistake was trying 5th gear.

ZD30 are a troublesome but in some respect a decent engine for what people have done with it.
Most problems is always buying a second had car not knowing its services life,

Rob,

You should never tow in 5th as it's right at the back of the gearbox and will kill it.

Check the GVM on the model you are looking at, and add up the weight of the people you are putting in the car, if you have four people around 150kg, plus luggage, fuel, add towball weight etc etc, you may find you approach GVM surprisingly quick, especially if you start adding accesories such as a steel bar/winch extra battey etc.

Mine (early GU) had a GVM of only 2960kg, with all my bar work and usual accessories, plus what i normally carry around, fridge/table chairs etc, i was left with a "legal" payload of 70kg (with full fuel tanks and driver).

Add my 3 family members and im over, and thats without any luggage.

Not saying it will be a problem, just be aware of it if you are big bodied people.

BTW, The GVM can normally be found stamped on the build plate under the bonnet.
