G'day lads, I'm moving home to Ireland soon and I will be buying a gu patrol between 1999-2003, they can be got for under €3000 and I'm wondering which one should I pick 2.8 or 3.0. Bear in mind I will be dropping in a td42 when I eventually find one so which one is easier to do the conversion to, also I would like to keep it on the road as my daily until I find a td42 and I've heard that both engines give trouble and I was wondering if anyone knows how to get them a bit more reliable and what are the common problems? Thanks in advance for any advice

If you fit a manual boost controller to your pre 2004 you should be fine but then again even the CRD are failing.
Get one with the best history and go from there,

There is a 3.0 for sale for €1650 with a rebuilt engine, what do u reckon. And what do u mean by CRD
Thanks

The 3.0 is easier as they use the same gearbox so its only really an engine swap with some minor work.

CRD is Common Rail Diesel. These motors came out in 2007 onwards.

This will not be a popular opinion, but:

Dude, I am usually the first to say, bigger engine, more power go for it, but you are going to get absolutely smashed on tax and insurance, so take that into consideration too.

KBrooking on here has been rocking a 2.8 in his GU and he has gotten that thing through some sport that I would have called BS on if I hadn't seen it.

Hopefully you took pics?

Which is the more reliable? 2.8t or 3L?

If I can't find a td42 in Ireland I will be importing an ls1 from Australia along with a marks adaptor kit. As for tax and insurance I will be leaving it as a 3.0 on the logbook and will be taxing and insuring it as a 3.0. I know it's risky but the tax office will rape me if it's 5.7 litre

Hahaha, that's the way. Will still be pretty high registered at 3l, but go on you good thing!
