This same question is running in 4x4 Aust mag, was just interested in what others thought.
I always carry hoses and belts, tools to fit them and my workshop manual, I even carry a new belt tensioner,
along with MAF spray and 2 Ltr engine oil, 12v wheel nut remover

Are we talking general driving or touring or 4wdriving 3D? Because it changes for me for each of these things

General driving- stubby cubby, MP3 player, daughters chair, Hammer(for kangaroos if I hit one with the car I can put it out of misery) and a multitool.

4wdriving- removable 2 way, high lift jack, tool box, spare belts and recovery gear.

Touring - a combination of the 2above

Always have wd40 or Inox in the car

Ever since the night I came across 4 teenagers that had just slammed into a tree I don't go anywhere without a good first aid kit - It was a mess, car was torn in half. Kept two alive using most of what I was wearing as pressure pads to control their bleeding till the ambulance arrived, with a decent first aid kit a third kid might have survived, the fourth was thrown from the car on impact and died instantly.

ATM I'm making up a Molle style survival pack that will clip to the cargo barrier.
It will have flint, knife, signal mirror ,compass, that sort of gear.
As with my first post I always carry a first aid kit, stocked from the chemist and a decent torch,
plus a fire extinghisher, Toot paper is a given, cause if you don't have any I sell mine at $2 a sheet lol

Always in the Trol is:
1./ First Aid Kit(s)
2./ Fire Extinguishers (1 passenger seat, 1 in rear)
3./ Torches - 1 head, 1 damn bright (1500 lumen), 1 reasonably bright but small (150 lumen)
4./ Tools - Last SuperCheap sale bought a nice shiny Stanley 150 piece mechanics toolset that folds up nicely (hopefully the bits will stay in there unlike the last ones) saw, wrenches, vice grips, shifters, MAF cleaner, WD40, jumper leads, spare bulbs ... (& a Multi-tool set in the side pocket).
5./ Recovery Gear - Straps, shackles, spare tow hitch pin, air compressor, fold-able shovel

oh and 1 more:
6./ Luxuries - toilet paper, picnic rugs (1 for humans, 1 for animals)

More goes in when going away.
