As per Rusty's thread Nic's mechanic has come back with the worst news ... now this is for advice not condolences.

Is the 4.2 viable????
Any ideas people.

What are your contacts like George for another 3lt??
Why is it I see the Navara 3lt for a lot less and more advertised than the GU.?

Navara 3ltrs are non intercooled
Shipping motors interstate kills any competitive price i could source locally anyway. Wreckers offering longer warranty periods have better quality parts than cheap ones with less warranties

I have had my engine and gearbox shipped for $300.. could have gotten it even cheaper.
I also got a quote for less than $500 for a whole 4wd

That GU I was offered earlier is still available for $5500 for the whole car or $3500 for what ever we can strip off it as long as it can roll into the auction... only problem is there is no key and no idea of its condition without running it?

My mechanic bought my car and will sell the motor at a reasonable price in Brisbane. It had 210 000km on it has cross country intercooler and safari d tronic chip. Only problem is the injectors or injector pump is rooted I believe

This looks pretty good Nic. You could strip what you need and be left with a good roller that you could sell for coin I think.

To me its an easy choice. Put another unknown in or go a nice reliable td42?
If your running slightly larger tyres then all you will need is a motor. Get the mounts welded on and hook in :)

A TD conversion will also increase the value of your car Nic, by quite a bit mate, you have a GUIV with a TD42Ti worth $30k very day and then some.

Hey mate yeah thanks for the advice. It is 5am and I can't sleep been wide awake thinking about this for at least an hour. I think you are right at the end of the day of I put another 3l in it I'm only waiting till that one for boom. I can afford to 10k for a new motor right now so I'm thinking what I'll end up doing is towing it up to the old man's farm and will do the conversion there when I can afford it. He had all the nessecary equipment. It's good news that all I will need is a motor loom and bolt ons to suit.

ok, just spoke to dad. he has suggested we tow the car up to his property next week and park it up there. he will take out the motor flip it over, remove the crankshaft and check to see if the bore is scored. if it isnt and everything is cocher he will throw in another piston and a new set of rings all round(or replace what ever needs to be replaced) and that should put us back on the road. if there is some serious damage and a new motor is in order i will de register the car and save up till i can afford a TD42, then go about putting the motor in at the appropriate time. i think this is the best course of action at the moment. thoughts?

I know it sounds great to "Just wack a 4.2td in it" but it all comes down to what can be afforded.

thats it mate. and if i can get out of it for $1500, then happy days. if it is worse than we think and the bore is scored then we will jsut start looking for a td42.

as quoted from his page: "ALSO INCLUDES TACHO RE-CALIBRATION MODULE (NOT REQUIRED FOR RD28 MODELS, CALL FOR PRICING)"

OK, so this is the go with the TD conversion.
It is all about the ADR rules of the day, for this reason you are restricted only to an engine that is compliant with that time.
In this regard you would be restricted to a factory Ti Intercooled engine only, it must have the EGR and other pollution gear, it must have the GU Pump, it must be fully compliant as if it was registered from factory.
If you wanted to do an LS conversion then you would still be able to do an LS1 conversion JUST. for the same reason.
The pool just got shallower.
Brett said though the biggest trouble you will have is finding the engine. that is his biggest problem. he is suggesting $10k just for the engine. He uses Killer Kustom looms.
There is about $1000 difference in the drive in drive out price of a TD v LS conversion.

isnt an LS conversion converting to a petrol motor? i dont really know much about it. i dont want a motor that makes big power or goes everywhere i just want a car that goes. haha i got a quote for a td42ti yesterday and yes the price was 10k. this is looking like big bucks no matter what i do and this shit couldnt have come at a worse time im currently looking for a ring for tegan so from what i can see the car will go into storage and go off the road for the next 12 months if i cant fix the ZD30 cheap =( but hey shit happens and ill still be here i just wont be able to go on all the trips with you fellas

Could you not part your car out then get a 4.8 gu? Cheap compared to diesel plus can get auto transmission plus power. I almost though about getting one till I found my gu iv td42i for under 29000

i spent 18k on the car, plus another 2k. i figure if i part the car out i wont make that if i part it out. if i sold the car as it sits i might get 10k for it, so i would be 10 k out of pocket. if i spent 10 k on it and fit a td42i myself(which i have to tools etc at my disposal to do) i would also be out of pocket 10k, but owuld have probably added that value to the car as it is imaculate. i will only fit another zd30 to it is i can do it affordably, around less than 5k, which is probably unlikely to happen.
oh and i dont think getting a petrol will suit my needs at all. i want a vehicle that can do remote trips and petrol just isnt as readily available out in the remote locations i want to take it

If you parted the car out Nic I would strip all the good gear off it. Side rails, winch, rear bar, drawers, cargo, roof rack, chip, then sell it as a roller suitable for conversion and still get $10k for it but have another $10k worth of nice gear sitting in the garage and find another without any mods and bolt your bits on. I think the change over would not be as much as you think, you have a heap of quality add ons on that car.
Or, go with plan A ;)
