You can run GPS on any iPad via Bluetooth, in fact, it's more precise because you can place the GPS module against the windscreen where it gets the best signal.
Also allows you to keep your iPad out of the sun.

Hey mate have you tried this yourself to see the accuracy?

Someone else mentioned the external plugin was not so good with accuracy but your comment makes sense but keen to hear from people who have physically tried it?

It's the only way I use my GPS even with my iPhone which has built-in GPS.
Up to 70 kph the tracking is spot on with the position of the vehicle i.e. the moving arrow in my TomTom app is exactly where the vehicle is in relation to any side street or crossing. Without the external GPS module the arrow is about 10 metres behind where I really am.

There's no external plugin. It works via Bluetooth and doesn't interfere with my hands free.

I use a Dual XGPS150

You really need a decent amount of memory Kris, I have an iPad 16gig 3G that I use and it's great. Maps take a far bit of room though so if you want to store a lot of maps then 16gb would be the smallest id buy.

Mine is an iPad2 and works a treat, the optics are awesome. Also the iPad sits in that pen slot rail in front of that flip door perfect mate.

Just to add some info that might be of interest, there are only 2 or 3 Apple licensed GPS devices but if you have a jailbroken iPad you can use almost any available GPS module.
I use a Globalsat receiver with my jailbroken iPhone but have to use the Dual with my iPad.
If you have both an iPhone & iPad and both are jailbroken you can use the iPhone as the GPS receiver for the iPad.

I have the same as you and find 16 gig useless it's maxed out to easily I'll be going 32 minimum or even 64 next time

Agree, mine was a gift and I'm thankful, I would go a minimum of 32gb or 64gb if i was spending my money though.

Never understood why Apple never incorporated expansion slots for sd cards........ Oh yeah, that's right, because they're money sucking vampires who don't give a crapple about the consumer :D

Its stupid calling it 16 gig anyway, once the operating system and updates are added up you only really have like 13 gig I think... Been a while since I looked but it was shocking how big a chunk was taken out.

I have the ipad2 as well and it's awesome.
Kris the blue tooth gps modules are no where near as good as the proper inbuilt gps. Easier to buy one with gps!

I beg to differ. Have you actually tried any of them in real life situations? How about some real comparison data rather than an unsubstantiated statement.

I have found built up areas in Brisbane where my GPS external receiver keeps working while my wife's iPhone goes around in circles trying to recalculate the route.

Try a Google search on Dual XGPS150 & aviation. You'll be surprised how many light aircraft use them..

Hmm, maybe it's the $20 chinese ones that others are comparing :)

I bought my Dual in the US for $85.

Built in gps for me, I hate having cords everywhere and running Bluetooth will run the pad flat faster. I'll keep using my ipad 2 till they bring out an air with in built gps.
I don't mind android but we can get the iPads on credit card points and I've never had any issue with it also I'm familiar with them now and can't be botherd learning anything else lol

I agree bluetooth GPS's are way more accurate. Most can have a greater number of sat fixes than the built in GPS chip.
I have one that you are welcome to borrow

The 4G/LTE iPad Air version has GPS built into the chip.
That's the one you want.
I now run an iPad Air (was iPad 2) with the Hema app and scanned maps and it does everything I need........can even chuck a movie or two on there or browse the web when touring around.....
