I know, I'm in a rush just to get something done for next weekend and this was the only thing available around town.
I havent done this for about 10 years so I hope this is correct...
Basically the main thread just pulls out easily from the black socket....There is nothing to actually hold everything to the bar as the nut and everything on the thread just comes off along with the entire thread from the black socket base/cord...lol....This may be too hard to explain on the internet.
Anyways, see pic below and see what the hell I'm doing wrong...lol

That just seems a bit strange the way this is set up and has confused me. Surely it has to be fastened to the bar some way. But I am sorry, as you have outlined this mount, it is just sitting there. I hope I am not missing something here.
Autobarn have UHF aerials on spring mount for abaout $110 and they be 6db stainless

It just doesn't make sense at all...I'm going mad...lol
Basically the main thread holding the antenna is only held into the bull bar by sliding into a black socket which just slides out if you shake the aerial.
I'll take it to a guru tomorrow and see whats going on.
You almost need a washer and nut to sit under the bull bar to hold that thread down tight but the black star socket goes all the way through the bull bar so you have no thread on the bull bar part at all.

It's not designed for a thin Bar Mount and are for grounded antenna's . The hole is usually way to big on a Bar and I think you may have it wrong in your piccy anyway.
The metal plate in your piccy goes one side of the mounting flange or guard and the rubber mount is squeezed together by the Nut and the rubber insulates the radiating element and thread from the metal. Looking at the pic I think you might be running out of thread before the Nut compresses the rubber the correct amount.
The radiating element then screws onto the thread over the top of the nut so when the base is poked thru the hole it goes plate, insulator, black rubber and then tighten nut by holding the underside then antenna
Only a guess as its a tad hard without seeing the mounting in the flesh

Is what was confusing me. With that mount without seeing it I am only hazarding a guess. This is why I went to there site to check it out. They only have 2 illustrations and the one I posted seems to be the closest.

coax should have two wire elements; 1 is outer sheath that should fit in metal case, 2nd is centre core that gets soldered into pin. Main base nut stays put with earth plate on it. That goes against bar/panel that it's being attached to. Some do use metal spacer to cover hole, most don't just has mount placed on and held in place by small nut. The type above is only for 27meg, am/fm, or scanners. For UHF use the round style with prefitted coax. Yes it will work but to what efficency and at what strain on set I'm not sure.

Sorry, I missed the bit about UHF in the early posts that Tim has correctly raised.
To reiterate and clarify - that mount is for an non-ground independant 27 Meg Antenna and will work OK with a ground independant 27 Meg but is crappola for UHF transmission. I had one on my prev vehicle as I had a Uniden Dual Bander (UHF and 27 Meg Set all in one).

If you look at the link in an earlier post, the one I think AB is trying to install the UHF. They have 2 different diagrams. 27mhz and 477mhz. My link is to the latter

AB aerial mounts for UHF with coax are faily cheap and available @ most autobarns, supacheap, tandy, dick smith, repco, bursons, one stop, etc.

Cheers for the comments fellas.
I got this from Dicky Smithy and thats all they had. It's for the Uniden Cb radio.
Thanks for the help, I think ET's is correct in saying that I'm running out of thread to hold down the top part as I'm trying to fix it to the orginal GQ bull bar so I don't think this is the right mount.
I'm in an industrial area today so I'll pop into Piranha 4x4 and get something better and take this back to Dicky.

i HAVE A MOUNT LIKE THIS AND THE NUT GOES ON TOP OF THE RUBBER AND WHEN TIGHTENED PULLS THE BOTTOM UP AGAINST THE BAR FOR GROUND.
THE NUT IS THE LAST THING TO GO ON
i HAVE UNIDEN UHF CONNECTED TO THIS MOUNT AND IT WORKS WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL

Bob, is yours fixed to a bull bar or to the body of the car?
If to a bull bar, how thick is the steel do you think?

AB. One thing that needs pointing out is that there are two different antenna mounts - VHF and UHF. The first mount you show a picture of is a VHF. The coax is soldered to points "external" to the antenna mount. In the UHF mount the cable goes up inside the mount and solders to the base of the antenna. The reason for this is that UHF has a much smaller wavelength and the distance from the external mount (in a VHF mount) to the base of the antenna adds a significant distance to the effective length of the antenna, making it less efficient. If you install a UHF mount you can use it for both types of antenna - but not the other way around. I hope this helps.

Ab how did you go? I just realised your original problem...... the centre should not come out as it should be fixed to the small oblong plate under earth plate, the centre and little plate should not be two pieces. lookat your first pic, the very bottom piece should be attached to centre threaded piece, as to stop it pulling through.
Tim
Ps one of thes will be fine for AM/SSB CB Radio.

All in fun mate... hence the ROFL
Everyone has a Homer moment once in a while... problem is mine are about once an hour these days.
Anyway, to get back on topic. I still don't think there is anything wrong with the mount per se just that it isn't the correct one for the application.

Thanks again guys, to be honest I didn't like this type of mounting anyway so I went to a proper 4x4 store and bought a much better antenna and mount. The spring base one with the long bolt through bull bar type. I'll post some pics up this arvo as I'm just about to fit it.
Just rung Dick Smith and they will refund everything if I have receipt, credit card and put it back in packaging.
The misses is taking it back now so glad to get the mmoney back....Well actually I'm not getting the money back, the wife is and in fact she also has the credit card...lol....What have I done, this is going to cost big time!!!!!!!!!
