I had my battery out to fit a new washer bottle and found this ugly mess ! I am surprised to find the battery tray assembly is welded to the wheel arch. I think I might fab up a completely new battery tray (x2 as i want to fit an auxiliary) and cut the old one out. Has anyone done this before? Any hot tips?
Thanks :-)

The inner guard of the GQ is renouned for cracking under the weight of the batteries. If you fab a new one make sure you put a top strap on that goes back to the top of the guard too, this will relieve the counter lever weight on the inner guard.
It looks like you could just weld in a new base for that battery tray though? I am on the phone so the pics are small.
Both my guards have 100mm or more cracks in them and I am going to remove the second battery and install a 24v system in the rear footwell instead.

Maybe get some stainless steel ones made that will bolt in using mudguard/penny washers.
remove and treat all rust first

Got the same issue in me GQ, bit too far gone to weld a new base in though lol, didn't know about the wheel arches cracking. Bit of useful info there
