shock sizes

hey peeps

im just curious to know what people mean when they mention there shock sizes. ive been out of the scene for a number of years and it use to be if someone mentioned they had a 5 inch shock it would be in relation to they had a 5 inch lift. but these days im seeing people mention there running a 3 inch lift with a 7 inch shock. does it still refer to lift or are they messuring the shock lengths from somewhere else.

or

is it the latest thing to run say for eg a 3 inch lift with a longer shock?

You can put longer shocks in but if they are too long you will bottom out on compression and the shock will have a short life span, so to prevent this you have to extend your bump stops to stop the shocks bottoming out and in doing that you loose up travel. It's not for everyone.
