Front mate, gives you steering as well as traction.

that's what I would say but someone else said not to put on front because if they fail some how they could fowl up and possibly loose your steering. has anyone ever heard of this?

surely they could only fowl up if not for the right size tyre,or fitted incorrectly

I wouldn't think it would be a common thing for chains to come flying off.

They are fitted to front drive cars commonly. I dont see the difference. If you have chains on you probably wont be breaking land speed records anyway. Noisy pricks of things.

You can. I think the drive wheels are the ones that need traction, hence 2 on cars.

4 would be the best but as with everything else it comes down to money. 1 set is cheaper than 2 sets

Only need chains in vic, NSW must be better drivers as they don't need to carry them in 4wd's. Nissan Patrol hand book says not recommended to us chains

Could be a good conversation with the cops on the side of the road :)

Or we have better conditions where you actually need them ;)

Most times conditions are not severe enough to even worry about chains on a 4by - let alone all four. Besides - you have obviously never had to put chains on in the snow with a blizzard raging! To be out there long enough to put one set on is painful enough.
