hi mate,
so my recent experience with my GU04 model with 4" lift. i was developing wheel wobble at around 80-90kph on both 31" and 33" tyres(so it couldnt be tyres), and i meant violent shaking. sent it off to the mechanic thinking it may have been the steering dampner but wanted it checked out properly and fixed the first time. dampner was fine but he said there was heaps and heaps of adjustment in the box and once he tightened it up it was all good. aparently hitting those speeds would fould it up and it would start shaking but beacuse the steering box wasnt tight it would start shaking as there was not enough tightness to keep the wheels straight. his explanation(which was better than the one i have give you) made sense because it i turned the wheels and changed lanes agressively it would fix the problem temporarily till i hit another bump and sent the wheels off on a rampant vibration episode again.
i hope that helps.
cheers.

Ullo Tinkers,
just one thought in passing, make real sure adjusting the wheel bearings doesn't involve tightening them up.
Reassemble them, tighten them up heavy like, spin the wheel a coupla times to seat the lot, then back the nut right off till it's just about finger tight then lock it.
Wobbly wheels should never be a wheel bearing problem unless the they are totally, totally stuffed.
By the way, your 'avatar' doesn't look totally little sugar plum girly fairy yummy. Bit of a wild one?????????

Hi mate,
I have edited your thread title, when you start a new thread can you try and use a description on the question your asking or what the thread is about rather than just your member name.
You might find you get more responses 2 questions that way
Cheers

Bushes......another area to look at.

Ahhgh, the never ending search for front end perfection!
I've checked all the usual suspects on mine (bushes, swivel hub bearings and wheel bearings wheel balance etc) so far to no great effect.
Mine is similar to Rusty's description in that it can come and go so I hadn't thought of the steering box and will have a look at that. I am also going to replace the mushroom bushes where the radius arm meets the chassis as they are flogged out and I think I'll do the swivel hub bearings too. I've been told by my mate the patrol whisperer, that even if they seem ok when tested, they really should be replaced around every 150k to keep everything nice.
So I'll see if that lot resolves my problem and I hope that gives you a few ideas.....

Mudski noticed my car wobbles, at 90-100km/h. Then he mentioned that on his patrol, when he put 35's on, car stopped wobbling, but when he put 33's back on, it began doing it again.
He brought up a good point about tyre wear, if it wears out out of alignment, it may be enough to give the car wobbled. If you think about it, it makes sense. At those speeds and with the weight of the tyres, it's plausible. I never really thought about it till then.

Guys,
Just my experience recently.
I had the death wobbles at around the 80 - 85 k mark. Absolutely terrifying as the whole truck would loose control.
Most threads stated Panhard rod. Got mine replaced and it only exacerbated the issue. With the Panhard bushes fixed, it showed that the bad bushes was only hiding another issue.
Now ... Not a mechanic and can only convey what I have been told by my mechanic... But he re shimed my King Pin's. No shudder, absolutely a smooth run in the 90 down to 70 km/h
, ..
Anyway.. This is what I did to fix the issue.
Kindest regards

Lol I was just about to say that...
My brand new 35's on new ROH rims, the car don't wobble, one bit. My 33inch Cooper ST's(chit tyre) worn to about 40% on brand new ROH rims, the car wobbles at 80k's. Many assumptions on the how's and why's though. Having said all that, my last set of brand new 33inch KM2's were on older sunnies and they wobbled too.
So new tyres and new rims = no wobbles for me
old tyres on new rims = wobbles for me
new tyres on old rims = wobbles for me

The front ends are touch, a micro bit if play is enough to stuff the whole show..
Unfortunately there is no right or wrong answer..
Some people have bushes done and all good, others do bearings..
I on the other hand looked at my 23 year old truck and pulled the whole front end out and re did the lot..
I've now been driving for 10000km with no steering dampener and not a wiggle ever...
So you have to decide if your going to chase one part at a time or just bowl it over in one..

Thanks everyone,
I thought the front end wobble we get in our Patrol was due to my wife's poor driving. Not sure if I can let her know it is a common thing. I always deny it is there when I am driving.

I know this is a late reply but just fixed the wobble in my wagon. I saw a you tube clip on removing the shims. The steering feel like new now. I thought my steering box had some free play but is has made everything just right. Best part is it didn't cost a cent.

problem with removing shims is you have changed the preload on the bearings and if they are not worn they soon will be, i would take it to a specialist and get it checked or buy new bearings for when they collapse.

Yeah we are seeing too much of this where people are just removing the shims altogether without checking the preload.
Buy a digital scale for less than $8.00 and follow instructions on page 8.
