I will still sell the parts mate, and still fit them, I just don't want to own one anymore. It's a quick little motor, don't get me wrong, it goes bloody good. It's that thought that lingers in the back of my mind I don't like.

Plus I cannot afford to be off the road with a dead motor too.

Yeah but not up the hardest route. AB got up but just not via the steepest track. In fact Everyone got up Big Red eventually via lesser tracks and everyone gave the steepest track a good bloody go first.

Winnie
10th July 2014, 04:02 PM
Actually I change my mind about my response, I really, really wish I had have taken a spare air filter.
I took way too much food and found myself eating it not because I was hungry but just to eat it because it was there and not have to take it all home. I also took too much beer but that's no problem at all because now I have beer.
I took about 4 cutlery and plastic crockery and only used one and cleaned it each time. I did not use my little pie warmer either. But these things did not take up a lot of room in the car and it did not affect me at all by having too much of these things.

And what/how did everyone carry water in and how much per person ?

I was solo and used wipes to clean dishes. I consumed only a 20 litre jerry and a slab of 600mm bottles of water purely for drinking.

Also came home with way too much food and an extra 20 litre jerry of water.

You forget that there are shops to buy easy food!!!

Winnie

I took 60lt bladder for cooking and washing up and 2 x 10lt casks for drinking. I used 15lt for drinking. My bladder is more than half full.

I drank a box of 30 beers and could have done another 12cans. A bottle of whiskey would have been awesome but I forgot to pack it.

I should have packed clothes pegs but paid $9 for 2 packs in. Birdsville.

Should have taken my wife and daughter too.

Hey mate, I am about to dig out my members ride thread in coming weeks as I am committed to giving it some loving soon!!!

I have completely removed everything inside my vehicle and thoroughly cleaned it....Shock horror I know but it has come up a treat!

I have also removed my entire box from the rear and re strengthened it as I was slamming the fridge into the Jerry which pushed out the screws at rear.

Found the short in tail lamps as you know...

To answer your question...lol....I rung up Beam (docking station manufacturer) today and It's all under warranty. Spoke to tech bloke and there is no 12 volt component to test out the docking station so I am going to unsolder the connection tomorrow to try out direct to battery and test it out for ships and giggles to see if it was a power supply issue and if not I will send it back to get repaired so happy days.

Home safely now. What a ripper trip!

After parting company in Birdsville, Party B (Me Nicole, Roofy & Jane and Steve & Kat + Booga) travelled via Haddon corner to Burke & Wills Dig tree for the night. Then though Inaminka to Cameron corner for the next night were we continued south through Broken Hill and Minindee and home via Horsham. All up about 6,000 k ish, haven't worked out fuel consumption, but seemed to do pretty well overall, averaging around 700k per main tank. . . . (Getting jealous jet Jono).

Plenty of courrugations, on the road between Menindee Lakes and Mildura (more corrugated dirt) I lost one bolt and the other was just hanging in from the bonnet hinge. Lots of cleaning and rattle tracking down to do.

Heaps of pics haven't even looked at yet, will have to sort them out and get some up soon.

Cheers to all for a great trip, great crew.

Haven't checked the tread yet but did anyone mention first up Big Red!! GIDDY UP!! Don't know what the fuss was all about. . . .

Winnie
10th July 2014, 09:52 PM
Aren't corrugations fun! Haha glad to see you home safe. Did the rest of party B not go through the Flinders as planned or are they heading back up there? I thought Snicko and Neville were going to meet them there.

Rossco
10th July 2014, 10:02 PM
Yeah sorry, forgot to mention, we parted ways at Cameron Corner where the remainder of party B backtracked to the Strzelecki Track then to Farina Homestead between Maree and Leigh Creek to meet up with Snicko + Nev.

Algebuckina Bridge just off the Oodnadatta track just south of Oodnadatta. This bridge is part of the old Ghan line which runs along most of the Oodnadatta track. There are plenty of old sliding's, buildings and other stuff the whole way along. You could easily spend a couple of days just cruising up the Oodnadatta track checking it all out.

Winnies is a 3G iPad that has inbuilt GPS.

For non 3G iPads you can't hotspot to a phone or other device for GPS function.

You can buy external GPS devices to plug into no 3G iPads but I have heard they are not very accurate.

I've got a non 3G iPad which is pita so interested to hear if anyone has had any joy with a certain model of GPS plugin.

Sunrise at Dalhousie Springs

46825

46826

46827

Not a bad way to start the day!! Dalhousie Springs are a truly awesome place, clean as and perfect temp, pretty cool!! Would have been good to spend a bit longer here, should have left earlier. . . Damn it :(

46837

The lone Gum, actually a Coolibah tree and we didn't see any other trees for at least 100K.

46838

One of the many lakes we drove across, these were pretty cool, heaps of them in the eastern end.

46839

Here's another photo of Poppels Corner for S!#ts and Giggles :)

BIG RED!!

46900

46901

lined up at the bottom. It is much bigger than any of the other dunes. . .
It didn't take long for the anticipation and nerves to kick in, I think we were all hanging to have a crack. Last chance to adjust tyre pressures. After watching Darren not make it on his first 3 attempts I decided to go down to 12psi, and hoped not to roll a tyre off seeing as you have to hit it flat out and the bottom has a few decent lumps.

46902

Snicko AKA Shaggs + Nev

46903

46904

View from the top. Managed to make it up second go which I was pretty happy with. Good feeling cresting the top to the cheers of the crowd at the top.

46905

Roofy

46906

Strop - made it up.

46907

46908

46909

Ah yep, everyone loves taking photos of their own truck don't they!!

46910

46911

AB having a red hot crack - charging like a demon.

46912

46913

Soooo close. As Snicko said premature celebraton, I reckon the extra drag on the alternator from the horn was enough to make the difference.

46914

This angle shows the steepness a bit better. The photos from the top looking down look flat, they don't do it any justice. The sand is also verrrry soft, walking down you sink half way up to your knees. Pure power sucking stuff, you really have to cane the bajesus out of the truck to get up.

46915

With all due respect we can't forget about the old 60. Jokes aside it did well and never missed a beat the whole trip.

46916

Another GQ selfie

46917

46918

It had to be done - group photo on top of Big Red.

I have to say, that Big Red was a huge amount of fun and a real challenge, definitely a highlight.

As most know I opted not to cross the Simmo and travelled a different path.

I do want to claim the most K's travelled tho at just shy of 10,500 and the dubious priviledge of most fuel used at almost exactly 2,000 litres

I saw Camels

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/theeviltwin06/P6241533_zpsa5f5e892.jpg (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/theeviltwin06/media/P6241533_zpsa5f5e892.jpg.html)

and after 2 days and 100's and 100's of K's of W.A. and N.T. GAFA I saw mountains

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff98/theeviltwin06/P6251543_zps9ac601c3.jpg (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/theeviltwin06/media/P6251543_zps9ac601c3.jpg.html)

and little pebbles called Kata Juta

and a big pebble called Uluru

but not as red as my truck

So it's an actual inbuilt gps, not just an assisted gps that uses the phone towers. I didn't know they worked without the sim.

All it does is help speed up your GPS lock. So without a Sim it just takes longer to get the initial lock. All phones and tablets are like this. There is no such thing as assisted GPS only. Older phones without a GPS chip use RTT positioning nothing to do with gps

Just another big thank you for all the pics. Much better to get a feel for it all with the pics.

Interesting/surprising to see how much growth there still is in the Simpson.

Photos never show up angles and how steep things are. Looks like one of the issues with Big Red would be how rough it would be trying to get a run at it with all the ruts from so much traffic. Can just imagine trying to get some good speed for momentum but bouncing around and feeling the pain caused to the truck in the process.

You are not wrong... I hit it in 3rd gear but that was much too fast and I was bouncing all over the place and I felt so guilty for my car...

Tyre report. This was my first trip on the new KM2s in a 33 and they were awesome, handled everything perfectly. Great on bitumen, great on gravel, great on sand, great on dirt. The only thing we didn't try was mud!

I have been reading this thread religiously! Looks like a great trip was had.

Myself and some mates from Tassie are planning to tackle the Simmo in mid-September.

All of this dust talk has got me umming and awing about adding one of those uni filter Safari snorkel sock things for my aftermarket turbo-ed gq td42.

Is this a worthy purchase or am I better off just shaking the normal air filter out? Anyone run these things and if so no terrible impact on fresh air flow?

Forgot to mention that when we were at the dig tree there's a crossing over the river which cuts out atleast 30-45 minutes of the trip.

I saw it on your4x4 show the other night.

Dammit Winnie.
I'd just finished saying to the old boy that we need to stop wandering around the country so much and spend more time and $$ on the house.. Now,you've made me miss touring, I've spent the last 2 hours looking at my calender wondering if we could maybe fit in a trip to Tassie this year..
Thought I'd also tack these on here, seeing as they are related to the topic..
