Was thinking the long weekend but Saturday till Monday, no need for gate keys, I carry bold cutters :)

Do you have a car trailer?, think a tow would be on a car trailer knowing my luck :(

Will speak 2 the missus on the weekend and give you a call.

Do you think we would need snow chains?

Im almost tempted to go for a blast up to around Matlock on Sunday with this weather thats just hit. But my Patrol it sitting nice and clean after a 4 hour scrub from the snow trip. I really cfb'ed cleaning it again so soon. I wonder if the RWD Territory will handle it. Might be a bit sketchy.

Myself and Mat went up Mt Margret track also this afternoon. It was absolute mayhem on the way up. Cars everywhere. I think because last night they copped 90cm of snow at lake mountain so the road was closed and everyone was looking for an alternative. We stopped at the Blue Range rd turn off, considered going further but it was 4pm by this time. Too risky to go further. Might even sneak up again in a week or two me thinks.

Yeah was somewhat of a circus when I went up, passed a dude in a Honda Civic putting chains on but think he turned around. Got to the top and winched a Hilux out that got stuck turning around. . . GQ went pretty well although kinda struggled in virgin snow off the edge so put the lockers in and all good, got to the bottom of the mountain and unlocked hubs and only one was in lol haha. .

Love that last pic Markie should put it in the Dark & Stormy thread.

Yeah I know but more so the car was stock as a rock. Highway tires in snow that was 2ft deep in parts. Would have had no recovery gear too I bet, but no he was determined but failed. He was really struggling. I had to pull off the track and into fresh snow to make way for a few cars up ahead and I got caught when I stopped. Luckily I thought to bring a shovel, lowered the tire pressures and dug my way out and was all good.
No incidents for the day. Was a bloody rip snorta!
Ended the day with a beer and meal in Marysville.

This local event is a tiny candle compared to the horrors theyre facing to the east.

Just listening in on them again, they are fearing this wind change predicted , and the unknown path of it, big time... It could turn nasty.

That's smack bang both sides of a MFB/CFA boundary. Both urban brigades that will become unified as Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) on Thursday. Sure those paid local brigades have grass fire training but not like the steel-balled country volunteer heroes that protect private property from bushfires and the titanium-balled volunteer rappel and hover exit DELWP firefighters dropping in deep with rakes and drip torches.

Hats off to all the BALLSY vollies who put their lives on the line for COMMUNITY and without the militant union of the pros scoring them dream perks.

FFS the carrying on about the weather today is ridiculous. First item on the tv news, major topic of conversation on the radio. Jeez it got to high 30s, low 40s across Melbourne with a cool change early afternoon. I was out working in it no problem and I'm a fat prick. We get this every bloody summer, just stop the bull5hit hysteria. Last year I was working in constant mid 40s day in day out up in western qld. Nobody says anything coz that's just how it is. Media needs to grow up.

Serious carnage out our way. SES etc clearly all have their hands full so our neighbourhood all pitched in and cleared the road for majority of people. Several houses are a write off, fortunately our house was left untouched but I would say over 75% of our neighbours have had damage to there house/property in some way, we are just very lucky. Brother lives in Olinda and has been off the air for 3 days. His house is fine, house 3 doors down has a monster gum right thru the centre of the house to the floorboards. His estimation is that 50% of the trees have come down and those that remain have no leaves, especially in the direction towards the south - Belgrave and Upwey. Total carnage is an understatement. Trees standing for a 100yrs, trunks the thickness of a car are over the roads. All 3 access routes are heavily restricted access, but you can bet by the weekend the rubber necks will be up there, bogging things down or the thieves will start arriving, or the little old couples looking for a scone and cup of tea, going to be very difficult for these communities.

Have had zero intentions of visiting the worst hit areas but was called up to assist hauling out a piece of broken forestry equipment on our tilt tray. As slow as shit as the old Acco is still couldn’t get to site in a timely manner due to a 2” clearance’Maserati’ and multiple cyclists and even a hardened bikey on his Yamaha Viagra all rubber neck goorking their way through the poor Dandenongs.

Comes with the job my friend Marko mate. Thankful gratitude is received most of the time.
Other times we get our faces chewed of, because someone's 2yo daughter can't play Xbox at 1am...

Frankly, chatting amongst our selves today, we haven't seen this amount of havoc, since we got sent up north to assess black saturday damage up in the hills... Moist soiled large trees deciding to rest upon the lines all over the place. Something I've never seen in this scale before. Quiet honestly, I've used the chainsaw more in the last 4-5 days than I have in my entire life prior. Stihl got it !!! *flex*
Quiet honestly the unsung heroes here are the true blue legends of SES... Tell ya what... take my hard had off and bow to them any moment of the day.

Went out for a spot of whale watching. Got out of the car and walked to the edge of the cliffs near Cape Nelson Lighthouse. We had a 5 minute drop of sun. The tops of the bigger waves crashing into the rocks was being blown up and over the cliffs like vertical rain. Then a squall belted in across the raging sea, bringing horizontal rain that drove us to seek shelter. Man! It was brutally cold and so very beautiful.

Driving around at work since 5.30. So far the tally of big water over road inundated fools witnessed (so far mostly indian best selling car, Uber hybrid Camrys), stands at 6. And the supposed main sky river front isn't anywhere in sight. Waste of precious emergency services time wasted.
Thinking of our SES legends on days like this. Last thing they need is deal with morrons.
Hope the rest of you folks are all good and covered.

Yeah really hope everyone fared OK. A lot of areas I went to, people are just stranded and blocked by floods and road closures rather than being directly impacted.
Not sure if I heard correctly but they reckon it's all gonna peak tomorrow arvo, despite major rain stopping last night.

Only pic I have. I had to make a few diversions to get out of Eltham this morning as the Diamond Creek near split Eltham in half. The creek pictured is usually running about 2 meters wide and down about three metres in a gully.
Pic taken at 6.30 this morning, by 8 apparently it was half way up the rails.

definitely copped it here mate. our lead in street has been trashed. absolutely could not get in without a raised vehicle(as in SUV or larger) and even the neighbours territory bottomed out coming in last night. i hope this means our suburb finally gets what everyone has been asking for for ages... proper drainage. yes i know vast quantities of water fell but all our blocks are sloped so running water always has somewhere to go, but never anything to guide it, generally it just takes the most obvious path... wheel tracks.

Buy a 4wd so you can get out of your own driveway/street? Very average response from the council.
That "rut" river in the middle of the road will start cavitating deeper and begin to saw the road deeper. Hard to tell in the photos, but there seems to be a slope to the right.
Now i'm not a geologist, but isn't this a recipe for a landslide?

Roads have been stuffed/pot holed everywhere for ages, especially in recent months with the big wet. I know for a fact VicRoads have NO $ to fix and maintain them. Hence why you see the "Rough Road" signs everywhere, even on major highways. For example, might have to start airing down on Calder Fwy soon, it's that bad! I've driven Warburton-Woods Point rd in a far better condition than Calder.

There was a HUGE dip on there for, literally years. 100km/h section. At the "dip" exist there was major gauge marks from peoples suspension, sumps, trailer A frames bottoming out... Used to see cars damaged on the side after the dip ALL the time. Took them SO long to fix, that they actually had to re-new the "Rough Road" signs , because they faded and deteriorated.

Sadly Nico that’s an all to common site, water running down rds because they don’t do any drain maintenance anywhere. Yes I know there have been extreme storms but even the smallest of rain showers runs down the road these days because all the drains are blocked and unserviceable. Out at Nar Nar goin there is a big rough patch just before the Shell, I hit it in the truck one night & it speared me across the road, then just up the rd there was 4 cars pulled up with the hazards on with blown tyres/ bent rims, been like it for months, they’ve ‘patched’ it a few times but it blows out straight away, they just put rough road signs up there what a joke

Still raining on and off. Paddocks all have half inch of water. I found this vid is from earlier in the season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-oXuRZqHTA

We spent many, many days at lake Eppalock, fishing, skiing and exploring. Near the end of the vid it shows a small inlet to the right of frame. It is or is next to a quarry that the lake flooded. In the early eighties we used a depth sounder to show the bottom. You could see the road contour and what looked like a truck sitting on it. Sadly We will never know as it is too deep to dry out when the lake is drained, as it was almost a decade ago.

Don't build new dams as they will never fill. Ha!

Other side of the divide. Check this out (Monday 31st), heaps more rain, with water table rising now thru to surface level and the 6 meg dam has 80m long wall with I m free board and she breached over top but survived. At same time, 50kph westerly and another big stringy bark came down _ blocked access to our paddock garden. Just needs a bit more clearing away so I can get to the little red tractor so it can help out from behind.

Last pic is the dam over flow.

What's SES? Some sort of search and rescue service?

Our local State emergency services mate.
https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/

Mostly volunteers, responding to all types of emergencies like weather, storms, floods, fires. They work in hand with the fire fighters and the cops quiet a lot.
I work on the power grid and get to work with them all the time , mostly during storm, trees down bringing lines down or vice versa.
Some of the shit they do and put up with as VOLUNTEERS on their own time is staggering. Bow to them any moment personally !!!

Thanks mate for the explanation.

Here this is called "Civil Defense". A lot of help from the 4x4 comunity on floods, landslides, etc, transporting people back and forth the critical sites. As a great part of the people into 4x4 are also RAM radio operators, they help providing means of comms as well.

I took part once transporting Red Cross food, water and clothing donations in one of those occasions and had to do a river crossing (there was no other alternative) that was the only time ever I have feared for my life. Not a good memory.

As you said, these are folks that deserve a lot of respect.

A message recently received from a friend who lives between Mossman & Daintree Village in FNQ on a 100 acre rainforest property. He & his wife are in their mid 60's. Names changed to protect privacy.

Hi All, Today is the first time I have had access to the internet since just before Cyclone Jasper made landfall. We survived the impact of the Cyclone extremely well with our newly purchased power supply kicking in very early on and keeping us functioning. The flood levels were quite modest but made it impossible to get off the property and we had begun a general clean-up around the house. However because we did not have any communications at all we had no idea that Jasper had not moved over and past us and that biblical levels of rain were heading our way. So Sunday night at about 11.00pm the water levels began to rise from modest levels to something very scary (we ended up with flood levels 2m higher than ever before). We worked hard for an hour or so to keep our valuables up as high as possible but once the water level inside the house reached our waist we new we had to get the canoe and paddle over to our cottage (about 130m away) and rescue Fred our 81 year old tenant. After spending a bit of time sheltering under the cover of our veranda and watching the water constantly rising we decided to paddle back past the cottage and up the hill. We have a small shelter there and knew that it would be above the floodwaters. I managed to get everyone safely there and we sheltered there but I started to worry about our chooks so I paddled back to the house to rescue as many as I could of our 5 chickens. Managed to recover 3 but they were very cold and when I got back to June and Fred I handed them one each and we tried to warm them up with our meagre body heat. (I found another one at first light. So 4 of our five chooks survived). At first light I began the process of getting us off the property and to safety. I paddled on my own for the first trip and once I had made it out to dry land on the Daintree-Mossman road I met up with new neighbours Julie and Ian (They have recently bought the Hotel but live 1K down the road) Ian offered to look after June so I paddled back and loaded our small amount of gear into the canoe and we paddled back out and dropped her off. The water levels were dropping so the journey back to pick up Fred was an ordeal and took a bit of time but I did get there and organised to get him loaded up. He wanted to take way too much gear and we capsized twice before we even began the journey. It was a nightmare paddling out to the top of the driveway with Fred not able to offer much help. We managed to get within 30 meters of dry land when we capsized once again. This time in deep water with little hope of bailing out the canoe and getting back in. So I turned the canoe upside down to provide Fred with something to hang onto while I swam for help. June in the mean time was getting terribly worried about how long I was taking so sent Ian out in his Polaris. I met him on the road and with some extra lengths of rope and Julie's help we managed to swim out to Fred and winch him to safety but not before I cramped up and went down almost one time too many. If it hadn't be for Ian quickly grabbing me I would not have made it. So after a very long post (sorry about that) we are all safe and now trying to cope with the recovery phase.

Queensland, The sunshine state! That would have been an absolutely harrowing ordeal. Glad your friends made it out, Cuppa.

Dig all that out and put one of those concrete drain thingo’s in( sorry don’t know their actual name) which has a much wider drain section through the middle.

I think you are referring to a culvert. Yes they are made in a range of profiles, however the root problem is is the water run-off from the driveway eroding the interface with the pipe rather than the water flow being affected by bank up within the pipe I think. To resolve this AB needs to generate a number of cross path diversions like we see in the high country to limit the accumulation of the water volume reporting to a single point, the interface with the pipe. This is a simple but PIA modification that will fix this as the only water that will reach with the interface will be from that collected between the last hump.

Nah this is my top driveway entrance.

My road has major problems and the council has put in three crossover pits and pipes up from my driveway to deal with immense water flowing down but living in the heavy bush they all block up in heavy falls and cascade over everything.

I literally pulled out 1/2m3 of sticks and leaves from my pipe entrance and my neighbour regularly excavates the crossover pipes up hill but it’s just almost impossible to stop.

The only thing that does work is a series of star pickets up hill to catch the debris as it comes down to keep the pipes clear which I’ve just done.

The good news is clearing this out killed me and I now have the green light from the minister of finance to get an excavator to maintain our property!

One happy camper now gents lol
