Hi Guys

I've got another noob question!
What temperature should my ZD30 run at under "normal" conditions? I have ECUtalk, so I've been monitoring the temp there and it seems to be anywhere from 80 deg to 90 deg once its fully warmed up depending on the weather, car speed etc. Today was quite cool here in Perth, and it seemed to take ages for it to warm up. Was sitting in peak hour traffic for about 10 - 15 mins with the engine temp climbing really slowly from about 70 deg. I think I might look at putting in a new thermostat to be safe. What temp thermostat should I be looking at?

Thanks

Adam

Mine is normally sitting around 86-87°C in colder months and 88-92°C in warmer months.

Does the temp gauge go to its normal operating temp.....

Mine just sits under halfway, and never moves once it gets there.

Mine sits 86-88 recent months (winter). During summer I've seen it jump to 90. This is according to scan gauge.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like mine sits about right when warmed up. I was just a bit concerned about how long it was taking to get there. I think that I will change the thermostat just for my peace of mind. At least I'll have a spare in the shed if it turns out that it works just the same as the old one!! :D

Mine takes a while to warm up when it's cold, the temp gauge really doesn't move much once warm. Do you have an idea what it does when it's hot outside ?

G'day Drew
My temp gauge (the in dash one) doesn't really move once its warmed up either. I'm going off the ECUtalk readout. I think it might be a bit of a double edged sword, good to know whats going on but maybe I'm obsessing over the numbers a bit too much! Today on the way home on the freway the engine was at 85-86. It drops slightly to around 82-83 if stuck idling in traffic. I haven't had the patrol for long, so I really haven't had much of a chance to see what it does in the hot weather. I did a bit of soft sand 4WDing at easter. I think the daytime temp was about 30, and with 4 people in the car and pushing the motor reasonably hard in 4H the engine temp started to climb over 95. I stopped, put it into 4L and it was much happier. (its an auto BTW) Cant recall off the top of my head was the engine temp was then, but it certainly wasn't as high.

The black top stuff sounds normal to me, I don't do any sand stuff but when towing I'll get up around 93-94C when working hard so once again sounds about right. I tend to back off a little when I get around 94C, the good thing is it drops quickly, if it didn't I'd be concerned.

On obsessing over the numbers, I did the same thing until I got used to what Patty did and what was normal for her. I also picked up a coolant leak before it did any real damage by watching the numbers.

After I put in the torque converter lockup in my temps evened out more especially while towing.
