transmission fluid level check on gu3 patrol 4.8litre

I have problems getting a correct reading when I check level of transmission fluid. Sometimes I get a level showing up the correct level and other times it shows no fluid. I had this problem before and when I added addition fluid it pushed fluid out of the underguard breather.I took it to various transmission workshops and they also had the same problem. I had the fluid replaced 20000kilo.ago at a Nissan dealer and have no leaks of any kind but once again I get no fluid showing on the dipstick.I check with the motor running.If the motor is not running it obviously shows plenty of fluid. Is there any particular procedure for checking the fliud level.
