View Full Version : Nissan: "We can't service your Patrol..."

Dropped the car off for a quick oil and filter change. Express service they call it.
They just informed me they can't do it as the second battery tray is obstructing the oil filter assembly. But they've done it 3 or 4 other times.... Go figure.
They also told me there is An issue with the egr system as it's throwing up a code. (Egr blocked code).
And the funniest of all is ,supposedly there is a problem in the turbo control module and needs to be looked at or replaced. When I asked about this... What they were pointing at was the vaccum solenoid as it's now replaced by the Dawes and needle valves.
I attemped to explain it to him, but he's having none of it as he says it's all ecu controlled and cannot be altered.
Needles to say, waste of a morning.

You will find a few doing this now
why not save the dollars and change your own oil and filters
i took my 3l di to nissan once about an issue with the manifold leaking
as soon as he saw the dawes and needle well end of story
never been back do my own service

The only reason I went there mate is i have a few service vouchers with them from when I bought the car. Basically free express service.
I asked if they could just give me the oil and filter and I'll do it my self as this saves them labor etc... But they disagreed.
Oh well.

Guess you wont be needing the vouchers then
just get the oil and filters from repco or others

Sell the vouchers to fund your oil and filters :) happy days...Unless they're vehicle specific.

Mate the amount of incompetence I've witnessed there this morning, I couldn't bring my self to give them to someone else to go through it.

I really didn't think they could refuse to work on your car? If it's still under warranty then get it in writing they refused to work on it.

Well... a bit of a twist. Just went and got the car, and somehow they ended up changing the oil and filter, contrary to what I was told on the phone. The service manager from this morning was not there, when I picked it up so, they don't know why he changed his mind or whatever. Anyways it's done...
As to above comments, the car is out of warranty timewise. But it is also heavily out of warranty in terms of mods. The EGR blanking alone is an instant warranty dismissal.

I can see how the battery tray is in the way and can be frustrating getting to the filter, but it is still doable.

Roofies right
but you'd like them to be honest and say something like 'any excuse to get out of servicing' or even 'you've modded it so rack off' rather than a line of bullshit.
I've been told there's not much money in selling new cars, it all comes from salad and servicing but they sure load the crap in there don't they.
DIY Hodgey and unhappily accept the 21St. century

The aux battery in the way must be the biggest moronic excuse for not doing oil change. 99% of Patrols have them fitted. What is probably happening is that if you were to pay for full retail service there would be no issues.
It just shows what sort of dodgy offers these dealerships will come up with. Do it yourself, learn about the car and feel good about saving some cash in the process instead paying some dopey to do it.

Dont they undo the filter when the truck is up on the hoist anyway .... so they actually get to it from underneath, and the battery tray is therefore not in the way .....

Thats what I thought. Because I'm not paying for the full service, and also paying with just vouchers, they try and get away cheapest possible way. Which after a bit of thought got me a tad concerned, as they probably got it done ASAP. Oil should be left to drain a while, something I doubt they done, during their "express" time.

This is the way I got to it, last time without any dramas. I'm pretty certain that what Rumcajs, said played a big role. I wasn't handing over $$$, therefore, their care factor was zero.
Amongst everything else, while I was waiting there, I sat near the main desk, and couldn't help overhearing multiple other poor souls being absolutely reamed, for such miscellaneous stuff. The people behind the desk, are scripted. One of the first questions is always if wipers need changing or tyres rotated. They try and sell that as their labour income it seems.
And then there was my bill, $305 for oil and filter change, nothing else, nothing more. Obviously didn't pay this, but that's whats on the docket.

Technically, you can't get to the filter on ZD30 from underneath that easily as engine mount sits right under the filter housing and there is the front axle there too. The best way is from top but you can undo the filter from the side at an angle from the opening between chassis and the body. Long wobbly extension certainly help.

Well I just had my 30.000km service ! They didn't change the oil filter , I know this because I always put a little blob of grease on the allen keyhole ! plus the oil was over filled by well over half a lilter ! Plus no oil on the engine mount ! Makes you think that else Nissan doesn't do when they service your car ?

Which reminds me I should check my one. I KNOW 100% they overfilled the oil, because the amount in the catch can, drain tube shot up quickly since yesterday. Somebody I while back here, told me catch can fills up quick due to overfilling the oil.
The OTHER thing I noticed is... Magnatec A3 10W-30 on the docket priced $95.40. Seems a tad excessive for oil to me. That is just supply price, labour and filter were on top of that. Thievery.....

Fark, thats not right oil for ZD30. Should be 10W-40. You know the saying: "if ya want something done properly, do it yourself".

All the way down in berwick mate. The local northern nissan, i've never had issues with. Although they havent touched my Patrol much. My navara was there for a few years and was good, plus i had a few warranty claims which I was 200% assured would be knocked back cause of mods, and they got approved. This was 2-3 years ago though.

It shouldn't be a concern in winter in South Eastern Australia but for summer I'd change back. The oil is a bit thinner.

I struggle to understand, what is it exactly you are after?
It is actually a good thing that you don't have to visit Nissan. Those morons struggle to figure out what Patrol and Y61 have in common.
You do the service work yourself and have a mechanic to do more complex work so what do you want Nissan st$alers for?
They must do safety recalls, indeed they'd track you down through motor registrar if need be otherwise Nissan AU will be in a lot of trouble if that was a cause of an accident and dealer refused to carry out the recall because you have 3" exhaust and 2" lift kit.
If there is a recall for EGR valve functionality would you take it back?
In any case what recalls are you sweating about on 10+ years old vehicle?
If you are concerned about possible airbag recall than that has nothing to do with engine mods.

This is why I started doing services myself, warranty usually isn't worth the paper it's written on anyway. You can get the filter out with an aux battery no worries, just gotta pull it out lengthways... I suppose that might be beyond some service centres -_-

Well, I thought I'd mention, that my car was serviced there on Thursday, and this time there was no hiccups at all. There is even more things in the way, of getting to the filter, like a battery and catch can etc... And they didn't' say a thing.

Is there a reason why you don't do the servicing yourself Eric?

I change the oils, filters my self, even though I'm not confident with it, I still do it, as it's not rocket science.
I take it to Nissan as I have service vouchers from when I bought the car. Have one more to go. Its the only reason.
