Hello, dinkydy, and welcome to the forum. Please head over to the introductions and tell us a bit about yourself and your vehicle. What year Maverick do you own?

It's normally caused by worn plastic gears in the odometer.
Try giving the top of the dash a good couple of thumps above the speedo while driving. This is usually enough to get it working again.
If not you will need to remove the instrument cluster and inspect or replace the speedo head.

Haha is this such a bad thing ;)
I put a switch on my odo, cos we pay road user charges on our mileage - handy for off-roading. Funny when ya switch it on then off while on the road it goes backwards.

LOL beefy, so its more likely to be in the instrument cluster, rather than in the auto trans? 70 model fords had a habit of stripping a nylon gear in the trans.
I'll take it to work tonight and try the thump it and curse approach, thanks.

If the speedo still works it can't be a problem with the speedo sender in the box or the wiring to the cluster.
The speedo and odometer use the same sender.

I have the same issue since I got the GQ, only works sometimes

The back of the cluster has a tiny loom that comes out and plugs back into itself by the odo. Perhaps a wire is corroded?
The black wire on this loom is the odo/trip. That's what I spliced into for my switch.
