Hi all

The plastic on my door striker plates has fallen off and I've used electrical tape and heat shrink, but this only works temporarily. Wondering if anyone knows of a more permanent method or has seen gq striker plates for sale?

Thanks all

Andy

I had the same problem, so I put a drop of Rapid Fix on the loop and then built up layers of tape. I made sure there was glue all through the tape. Been good for about 18 months, but the door isn't used that much. I am going to try liquid tape to see if it is a bit tougher.

Have you tried taking them off and fitting them upside down, so you have fresh plastic on the catch/door side to close on ?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Unfortunately there isn't any plastic left to utilise by turning the plate around. Mudnut, what is liquid tape? Unless I'm having a blonde moment I don't think I've ever heard of it.

It is a brush on electrical tape. I have used it on some joins under the bonnet and it seems to be really tough. http://www.afcinternational.com.au/brushontapeblack2.html

Thanks mudnut. If you go down that path let me know how it goes. I've got some clear tubing in the shed somewhere, I wondering if i can somehow fit that.

I don't think liquid electrical tape would be strong enough. It's great stuff, but not overly resiliant to a beating. It's awesome to have anyway if you are willing to try. Not very expensive either

Tried some clear pipe. It was fairly rubbery but after cutting it to size and putting it on the striker plate then hitting it with some heat, sort of melted it into place and also hardened the pipe up some what. Closes nice and tight and isn't showing any signs of wear after slamming the door a few times. But time will tell, fingers crossed.

Well the plastic tube idea didn't work for very long. Soon fell off. I thought i'd ring Nissan and see how much striker plates are, $160 each. Bargain!

Anyway, I bought some PVC heat shrink tubing off ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111130810806?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
This stuff works brilliantly. Once heated, is very hard and durable. More so than regular heat shrink. Closed the door heaps of times and no sign of wear, where as electrical tape or regular heat shrink would show some deep gouging early. Think i'm on a winner.

I tried the liquid tape and it failed. Also the whole tin has gone off. A bit disappointed as I only got to use it for a few repairs. Keep us a updated as to how the heat shrink holds up, thanks, Parksy.

so how did you get the tubing on

I cut the heat shrink into a long strip of the correct width and used super glue to hold the tip of the strip onto the striker plate. Once dry, I tightly rolled the heat shrink around the striker plate and again super glued the last bit to hold it into place. Then applied head to set the hole thing into place. Still holding up very well.

The heat shrink that I used kind of worked. It was durable enough to stay intact, but it would spin on the striker plate after awhile.
I asked nissan how much new striker plates was, $160 each! So I looked online and bought some for $16 each.

Huh?

He showed me a picture and gave me the part number. There was no mention of the inside door part.

Are they good quality, or cheap knock offs? As in would you trust them to hold in an accident, Parksy?

Yeah somethings not right. I had OEM ones I was selling for $38. Nissan's retail is $49. Well according to Nissan here in Melbourne. I really think he made a mistake as the price you were quoted is definitely not right.

They are genuine nissan parts.

No idea. Could just be the dealer here in Nowra, trying to bulk profit off the poor suckers around here. When I ask for a price of something, they always say "it's about...", like they're making it up.

Haha sounds like our local Nissan dealer.

Re-bumping this thread.
Found that the door striker plates in Urvans, Cabstars and other Nissan commercials pre 1990 are identical to the plastic coated GQ ones - EXCEPT they are SOLID METAL of the same diameter steel rod as the brand new plastic OD.
$10 for x6 at Pick and Payless wreckers.

Plastic - pah!

Did all the gqs come with the plastic like that?

I've got a 90 model and I don't think any of mine had plastic.
