i think most of the people who fall into the banned category have made their attempt at 25 posts and been shot down by mods mate. needless to say they dont have the character to stick around. its good to have you back on board though after your recent dummy spit

Not here but on another forum.
CRIME : Had a go at a forum moderator a few years back who had NFI and was just abusing his power, he was 20 year my junior, not even old enough to drive a car... And was still wet behind the ears I will add.
SENTENCE : Perma banned me and my IP, but there's ways around this. LOL.

Hi, I'm MrSka and I'm an ban-a-holic.
I've been banned from more forums then I can remember. My first ban was on a fidonet bbs in 1989..... When internet forums were on the rise in the late 90's is where I learnt how to really piss people off, and then honed my troll skills, ending up with many, many bans, ip bans. One forum even IP banned a fairly large range of IP's to try to get rid of me, to which I switched to a USA based ip and continued on. My record is being banned after 1 post, approx 30seconds after registering :D
BUT, all that said, I've grown up a fair bit since then, went outside and got away from being a full time idiot, and here I am, ban free for about 3yrs now :D

Being banned from the forums is sometimes nothing more than a battle of egos. Many times there are also disputes and classic religous like wars like in political threads where ALP vs LNP supporters are slogging it out. Its sometimes taken personally and name callings and insults are flying.
However biggest problem is usually a lack of transparency in the moderating process. Hiding, deleting posts without stating reasons can excalate in to arguments about impartiality of the mods which can leave "sour taste".
I've just witnessed such on another forum where long standing member have been banned for daring to state his case in a deal between two members going sour. Mod over reacted and that left unpleasant experience.
As a consequence I'm starting consider my participation on the forum.
I like how moderation is done on whirlpool.net where the process is entirely transparent as every post/thread which is hidden/deleted has its title left visible with short message as to why.
Cheers

i guess your right mate. deleting and hiding posts isnt a good idea. but we dont seem to have too many keyboard warriors around here, if when they come they dont last long fortunately. its one of the reasons why i stick around. everyone here gets along and thats the most important thing. except for that AB fellow, no one really likes him.

We used to have that here until I upgraded the forum and by default it's not on now but easily bought back if everyone thinks its a good thing.
To be honest the culture here is pretty laid back so the only modding generally is harsh swearing and spam really.
Good info though mate, cheers...

I like the idea of leaving the header up and reason for mod deletion. It could also serve as a gentle warning to other users a reminder of what will be tolerated. That's my 2 cents worth, ex gst. :)

I have no problem with leaving a record of Moderation . I can tell you there is VERY LITTLE Moderation done here. To be honest the main time would be Clean up a thread for someone to remove Banter and get it back on topic. I really don't see a need to retain a record of that though as it would just contribute to the mess.
As a Moderator I can see all posts that have been deleted by other Moderators and also any posts that have been deleted by members. My view keeps the record on display and it can stay pretty messy if a thread cleaning has dropped 2 pages of Banter.
Even that Banter I would generally not remove unless requested.

Yeah but he is an animal!! Tod spends more of that time though on the Organisation of the place mate, the structure, where threads are on the forum etc. I am not sure he is spending countless hours deleting and or altering posts or threads. My view would show that as I see changes.
Don't get me wrong Nic, Toddie does an awesome job and the current structure is a result of the countless hours Toddie has invested in sorting it all out as the forum is alive and there is a constant need to organize to function. I don't think or that as "Moderation" though mate. Construction and management maybe.???

x2 with above, I have no issue with members seeing what gets deleted, but as Darren said it can start looking pretty messy. All members can see what gets moderated and it usually doesn't warrant a message 2 state why as basically its just swear words that get moderated, 99% of anything that has been deleted is spam or double up threads the other 1% is either political or the thread just turns 2 sh!t for one reason or another. Most people here now the rules and obey them and the forum pretty much runs itself with hardly any moderation :)
well you might do very little moderation big fella, but i know old toddie is run off his feet dedicating countless hours keeping this forum well behaved!!!
You guys pretty much moderate yourselves...............well most of the time *L* Daz, Growlers and AB probable do than me when it comes to moderation

Thanks Daz and yes most of my mod work on here is not actually moderation never really has been, I originally jumped on board as a mod so I could help Andy maintain the structure of the forum, moving posts around, consulting with AB getting new categories and sub cats up and running, Looking for vb mods that would benefit the look or make the forum more user freindly.......pretty much all the background stuff.
And back to the subject of the thread...........I have never been banned from a forum, although occasionally I have thought about banning myself :)
