Just got a nissan 4.2 diesel manual Gu 1993. It has a shudder and vibration that I am trying to diagnose, and are at a bit of a loss. I changed the engine mounts, which in the end didn't.t look to worn. Any other advice someone could give me?

Hi , we have two patrols now, just got this new one, its in excellent condition body and the motor is all good but- has has done 300,000 km.. it vibrates terribly on idle, when changing gears it clunks , and shudders when it stops and starts. Trying to diagnose the problem. It's a swb diesel manual gu 93. 4.2 l Nz new. Our other safari. About the same year but a lab, does the same thing. Is it just something that patrols do or is there something I should be looking at. In the process of sticking new shocks in now?

sorry to say mate, but in Australia the GU model didnt come out till 1998. before that it was GQ. when you say vibrates, so you mean when its standing still? it the vibration from the engine, the wheels, does it come through the steering wheel, does it only do it at idle? if thats the case i would assume its idling too low, but im not expert.
ive re-read your comments a few times now it definitely sounds like the engine is idled down too much. im not sure how diesels work ive only had me diesel for a few months now but i know that engine vibration with petrols is a sign the engine is down on power, like spark plugs, leads or dizzy. diesels arent the same but its probably somthing similar.

Plus there are 2 different issues with vibration from the motor plus the gearbox or clutch having issues also..
Shocks have nothing to do with it at all mate??

Get a crowbar under the transmission crossmember and move the tranny up and down to see if the transmission mounts have torn apart.
From my limited knowledge on the 4.2's is that they are a rattly motor anyway. Part and parcel of a 4.2...
When was the oil last changed in the gearbox? The clunk and shuddering could be just from old oil.
How far from the floor is the clutch pedal when the clutch engages?
Does the rattle disappear if you just put your foot on the clutch whilst sitting there with the engine running?
Is the car lifted also? If so what size lift?
Exhaust loose anywhere?
Check the uni joints for play...

Ok. Have to come clean, I've been writing this for my husband, he.s working under the car in the shed where we don't get Internet in the shed, so I'm relaying second hand information in his name. ( hence why I may sound a little ignorant) also he's hopeless on the computer. But he says taking the engine mounts out was one of the worse lobs ever, no skin on his knuckles now. Should have started with the simple stuff. Gonna try the idle screw.
Thanks for the reply
