View Full Version : Utilising Ashtray space....

Being non-smokers we decided to get rid of the ashtray and it turned out to be a good place to put the voltmeter and a few switches. Used ply as the base (which was a mistake as it chipped easily) and painted it black. My scroll-sawing leaves a lot to be desired, but it turned out reasonably well. If I decide to redo it, I'll use MDF, but this will probably do.....lol

As a new non smoker, probable over one year now, this looks like a great idea.
Will see what I can come up with, thanks for sharing.

Yep hindsight is a wonderful thing .... lol. MDF would definitely be better, it chipped some more taking it out to wire it all up. I made it a very tight fit, but I don't think I can be bothered doing it in MDF now (unless it breaks) and the scroll saw makes very fine dust, would have to wear a mask with MDF....lol

Wiring half done (bit to the switches). This is a pic of it being tested. Small rocker switch in position 1 to indicate main battery, dash lights on so the three switches are illuminated, reverse camera switch on to indicate camera turned on. Put in a 12 pin auto plug/socket to facilitate easier removal. Pretty pleased with it........

Yeah gotta be happy with that , I take it the rocker switch is to monitor both batteries.
I've only just purchased one of those Volt meters and was going to drill into my centre dash.
Now I have a sort of no drill policy so this may be the answer

Yep, the rocker switch is to monitor two batteries. The second battery is on the to do list....

For non smokers in a gq, the ashtray is a brilliant spot for a small UHF.

Unfortunately I am a silly smoker but its great to have a decent ash tray.

Unlike the gu utes ashtray which fit a whole 4 cigarette butts!!!!

That's cause your rough and heavy handed. ;)

You can buy a new switch cover for $5. I reckon they are the best switches you can buy and I have 14 of them in the GQ.

I bought mine from this guy. Not genuine Carling or ARB, but the switches are $10 each and the covers are $3 each.
