View Full Version : Aux tank hose sizes, type and lengths?
AB

I'm not expecting a huge reply to this but next weekend Winnie and I are putting in our LRA aux tanks in our gq's.
Just throwing it out there if anyone has recently done this and know what type, size and lengths we need for the filler and all breather hoses?
Long shot but worth a try?
Failing this I might check out Rosscos set up for lengths if I can get to it properly and take the dual filler neck to pirtek for exact sizes etc...

Ones that fit and don't leak :).
And don't forget to use hose clamps.

Awesome. Unless someone tells us exactly what we will need the we will just measure Rossco's, add a little bit and take the neck and tank in to them.

As mentioned the filler hose is the killer.... for the proper stuff it is very expensive.
Normal fuel line is not a problem and I would get extra in case of stuff ups...
The breather line is 5/8th and I tried to cheat and use heater hose..... it seams to be ok on my LR tank but on my main tank it has gone hard as a rock..
The filler hose has to be exactly the right length, if it is too long it will kink and make filling a pain.
I got Mudski to look into it for me and was shocked and almost did not believe him when he mentioned the price of this hose then I started to look myself...... $$$$$$$$
I am not sure if there are cheaper options with the filler hose and would be interested myself if there is.

Good idea mate. Wonder if they do a kit... I read some posts on the other forum when I was looking it up a while ago and they said the dual filler came with hoses, all those posts were from like 2010 though.

Also I can't find the other post from westy asking about the two front fittings.
Looks like they just cap them off.

You can buy tank cleaner, I'm pretty sure Shops like SC, Repco may sell it but ring before you go
Hot Rod guys use it all the time
Just asking for trouble using heater hose for Fuel, sooo many problems, never heard it before

I ended up using turps and rags, nightmare job as your hand just fits in and the baffles restrict half of tank.
Then vacuum cleaned all inside as the rust was then dusty.
Put 10 litres of fuel in, shook it around like a demon and drained.
When I install it I might throw another 10 litres in, go for a 10 min drive and drain again just to be sure but it came up a treat!
Lucky I did it as I found chunks of gaskets in there!

If worried just run an inline filter for a tank or two....

Yeah I think I might just do it anyway and tuck it up high so it won't rip on debris but easily accessible.
Was just thinking that.
Also, I'm not sure what hard drugs I was on earlier but those screws do fit in the sender housing threads.

You can try putting some gravel in the tank and shaking it around to knock all that rust off winnie

Checked out rosscos set up and it all makes sense.
Lucky, as I was about to buy way too many lengths of fuel line just to be sure I wasn't going to run out.
Well do a proper write up on lengths and sizes once these are installed for anyone else needing to do this.

Only issue with using the aux tank out of a tb42 that is the most common available second hand due to the gas conversion is the different filler diameter.
Looks like the filler on the tank is 38mm OD and the neck is 44mm OD.
So that's a gap of 3mm all round.
A lot of suppliers make up a mandrel bend reducer.
Most diys and even shops would just heat up one side and make it fit or even double clamp on the tank if using larger pipe.
Some suppliers also use brass elbows on the main aux filler hose in certain points to avoid kinks so you'll have to carefully make a nice flow direction to the neck to avoid it.

I makes you wonder why they made the diesel tanks with a larger filler.
Also you would think that they would ask the question when you buy a dual filler neck too as I'm sure a lot of people have run into the same thing

The reason for different filler sizes is, a diesel will run on petrol, but a petrol won't run on diesel..
Anyway, I I was thinking of buying assorted bends and alloy or stainless tube for the straights..
Thoughts

Go to an exhaust shop today mate and ask them the make a flare for you out of 38mm pipe if they have it and flare it out to 44mm easy done. Same as making a slip joint for them. Only needs to be 150mm long or less. Get 2 made for $20 or less I bet.

Got them done today, thanks for that tip Darren that's spot on mate!
Andy and I have been through hell this week trying to get all the parts we will need for the weekend. Of course it would have been a lot easier if we had planned earlier and not done it all during this week!

All done, just need to do the wiring.
Needed to modify sender move brake lines for tank to miss drive shaft and running the main aux filler hose is a tight fit.
If I had to do it again I would connect up the hoses to tank first...lol.
Only needed 1.5m of hose lengths as well.
