Howa 1500 all the way for that price range... i have owned 3 or 4 howa's and think they are a good bit of kit for the money.

The scopes that come with these rifles will be junk and not worth spitting on..
Many times i have seen scopes come with these packages that are not suited to a rifle with any sort of recoil.
Most of the time you are better off buying a bare rifle and kitting it out yourself.
No more shit scopes for me.

I was tossing up between a browning tbolt vs this RAR tactical. Price won....
Mine has a 16.5 inch barrel, larger bolt handle and threaded medium contour barrel. Nice and compact. Has the standard LOP stock w/ raised cheek piece.
The compacts look like a good bit of kit for a smaller shooter. Get the muddy girl compact. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/04/133.jpg

Haha fair enough. Another option for light weight rimfire is the mossberg 802 plinkster had a play with one at the LGS (in pink haha) was quite a neat little rifle easy to hold and handle for $350 with scope (2nd hand).

I have owned an 802 in 17hmr with the flip down handle and found it to be too cheap feeling and had rust problems on the cheap stainless and feed issues.
My mate was looking at buying one for his daughter and i talked him out of it.

I'm in the process of applying for my license now.
I was just going to buy a 22 for starters for shooting foxes and rabbits on my mates farm.
My mate reckons that I would get bored with the 22 very quickly and want something bigger straight away.
Thinking maybe a 223? I have only ever used shotguns from growing up on the farm and have never really used rifles.

I must say I dont think you will do wrong with a ruger american. Mine seems quite well built for a cheaper market rimfire. Shoots very consistent too. It preferred the cci subsonics today. I was only shooting subs (main reason i went .22lr). I went through winchester 40gn and 42gn, cci, remington and highland.

I'm ex army, so have used all sorts of guns and my first personal rifle was a 270win (not too long ago either). Used heaps of mates centerfires as well.
But at the end of the day I had a massive smile on my face from shooting the little .22lr again today. They are great fun and cheap and easy to learn how to shoot properly. A box of 100 rounds for $15. Let alone cheaper if I wanted to buy a slab of rounds. My 270 is about $46 per 20 factory rounds (.223 is cheaper) You certainly think about $$ adding up when sighting in or practising your marksmanship skills with a centerfire.

Totally agree with the above. A .22 is essential I think. Everyone has already 1 even if they think not needed they always end up with 1 haha. It's all about getting use to a rifle. Holding it steady without being worried it will kick hard. I know quite a few people who bought bigger rifles straight up and just don't use them because they become scared of them. Best to get use to holding smoothly pulling the trigger and the experience on a small calibre

I used to drink with the rabbiters up at Kulgera in the early 80's
they shot 400 pair a night at the same spot every night for a week
then move on, Their weapon of choice was those Bruno Bolt action
They could put a bullet in a bullet hole time after time, Oh yeah and every
rabbit or roo were all head shot One bullet per carcass, Then they
released that calici virus. Boy they were the days.
Fun times were had at the Kulgera road house oh yeah fun times LOL
Forgot are they still a very accurate rifle???

Guys, I'm looking for a nice scope to match with one of the new Ruger Precision Rifles in .308. Something with an illuminated reticle and a zoom to about 12 or 14x with a nice big objective lens. The rifle will be used out of the truck mostly, but with a few sessions here and there sniping pigs off lagoons and dams. Not really something I'd take through the thick scrub, but would be good to wind it back to around 4x at the other end of the focus range.
Any suggestions? Price - well, hopefully I don't need to go much over 1500-ish.

I've got a meopta meostar R1 3-12 x 56 with illuminated centre dot. It was roughly $1100. The glass is comparable to other euro brand for a lot less dollar. I also added a meopta ballistic hunting turret. I've been comfortably dropping roos out to 500m (most around 300m, 520m longest). Under a lightforce spotlight or my olight mx3 javelot it goes great. Similar quality light transmission as my brothers kahles scope which is also quality (lot more coin). I also have a vortex crossfire II 3-9 x 42 (cheapest in vortex line) w/ illuminated centre dot on my .22lr and if you turn it up too high it red hazes the whole view, the meopta has none of those issues. Crystal clear illuminated /w zero washout / haze.

Thanks Sooty, come to think of it, I have a 4x Meopta on my 1968 Browning .22lr pump action and its always performed flawlessly. I'm unfortunately not up to date with buying scopes as I haven't needed one for at least the last 15 years. I'll take a look at them again.
One of the Yanks I work with also mentioned Vortex as being worth a look. I'd never even heard of them until now. Seems like there are just soooo many options out there now that it is confusing as to what is decent gear and what is cheap shite or the opposite in not being value for money.

So I'm getting back to this, applying for my shooters license again. Lost interest last time but I'm pretty keen now.
Looking for advice though, for my first rifle.
Pretty sold on the .223, my mate has a Tikka T3 which I had a shot of last weekend and I really liked it. No idea what they're worth though?
I think I would be up for a safe, the rifle, a scope and a scope mounted spotlight. Any advice on good value for money items? No idea what my budget would be because I have no idea what any of this stuff is worth!

New or second hand?
Heavy barrel or hunting rifle?
.223 is a good starting calibre, accurate enough and ammo is reasonably cheap and easy to get.
Optics could be as much as the cost of the rifle, and don't forget a decent case and sling.
Do you really need a scope mounted spotlight to start with?
I am guessing you will be walking at night with it? So maybe you want a composite stock type rifle that's not too heavy? If you liked that Tikka, they are bullet proof and a pretty good choice.
If you are going new, think $2K as a ballpark.

Probably 2nd hand to save a bit of money.
Basically the only shooting I would do is foxes and rabbits at night on my mate's farm. I could definitely go without the spotlight to start with.
Once I have done a fair bit of shooting with this I will look at a 30-06 or something similar for deer stalking.
That same mate also has the Tikka in a 338 which is nice too.

Mate don't think you could go wrong with a second hand tikka. As for the spotlight I use a Olight mxu-3 javelot with a magnetic barrel mount clips on and off in seconds and easily handles recoil of my .270win it was about $260 (from memory) it's up there in price but easily shines out over 400m with naked eye and I can identify roos through my scope to an easy 500m and take the shot. A .223 will be an easy calibre to find ammo for and plenty of options available, can't go wrong really. What's your target species or even shooting objective (target/longrange etc)?? That will determine your calibre selection more than anything. I went the .270 as it was minimum legal for all deer, flatter than 30-06 and quite a versatile round as I use 110gn projectiles for small game. If I was just after foxes/rabbits a .223 or my next purchase may be a .204.

I don't know much Winnie but the.223 would be good for the foxes but a .22 is all you need for rabbits. A 223 will put a pretty big hole in a rabbit and make a fair bit of noise. Most or you rabbits will be shot at 20m or less off the back of a ute and the 22 will shit it in. 22s are bloody cheap and the ammo is cheap too. I think my 22 was about $350 as a package with scope, my .223 was closer to $1500 with the scope on but got a great deal on the gun. RRP it's probably a $2k package.

22 isn't limiting at those distances mate. I can shoot a shot gun shell consistently at 100m with my 22lr. They teach you more to. As you need to learn about bullet drop and wind etc. I'd say but a 22 first see how it goes. Another thing is running cost. 22 is about $7 or $8 per 100. 223 is up around $1 per round. In bulk I think we got it down to about 70c each and reloading won't save you money until maybe the 30th year of owning it all haha.
Scope your best bet is to go to the store and look through some of the decent brand ones. A decent scope now will last and you can move it to a new rifle later but in saying that a package like my 22 has a cheap scope but it does the job so far. Maybe save money on shore for a 223.
I reckon everyone should start on a 22. So much to learn from the old 22 out at 100m. It's still accurate. Others to look at are the 17hmr or even 22magnum. Both great bunny and fox guns and still in the cheaper end although more expensive than a 22. 17hmr does get affected by wind a lot though compared to a 22 cal.
As for torch check out wolf eyes website. It's what I have. I've got 4 of their torches now and love them.

Fwiw I was a pro roo shooter, skins, in the late 70s and the .22 magnum was more than adequate, cheap to run and with experience good to 150mts.
Bonus in my sit was quieter as well.
You might also consider the 22/250 fast and flat over the ranges you're suggesting.
matfew
7th July 2016, 08:52 AM
250 won't be needed if he's only shooting it to 100m. Plus way to load. Still don't think you need a 223 straight away mate. For a good 223 package you'll be up around 1500ish more for the tikka. Almost any 22 will shoot accurate though. Perfect gun to get you into the sport.
If you jump straight into a 223 in my opinion you miss out on learning more about ballistics as you don't have to deal with them as much. Put it in perspective. At the range I can hit the target at 500yrds maybe 80% of the time with 223. With the 22 and knowing what I have learned I can almost do the same even though the bullet drop is so much I can't see the target in the scope haha. But I can still but it.... I think jumping to a 223 is just not the right way to get into it properly. If your planning on deer hunting particularly at distance then your going to regret not learning about bullet drop or windage etc. EVERYONE I know who shoots regularly had a 22 and is usually always with you when shooting to.

I reckon also if your walking up on rabbits you will get way way closer than 100m mate, way closer! 100m is miles away from a bunny, you should be able to whistle up your foxes to pretty close too if your on foot, no vehicle noise will be an advantage.
Don't get me wrong mate, my first gun was a 223 & 3006 purchased together, the 3006 has done very little but it's not really a gun you take out to shoot 20 rounds out of. It's a big gun. The 223 will easily deal with Roos and foxes but is a bit extreme for a bunny gun, as noted the cost of ammo of a 223 over a 22 is night and day! If your out on bunnies you could use 50 or 150 rounds in a night. That will cost you $20 or $150! The 22 will easily do it. I would just never grab the 223 for bunnies.

I thought shooting roos was illegal? Or is it the type of thing that's technically illegal but everyone does anyway?
If that's the case then I will without a doubt get a .223 because there are literally thousands of roos on my mates farm, and a few pigs too but we're yet to actually see them. His property backs onto a pine plantation.

I might get one down the track but want the .223 for now.
The reason I supported Mattys assertion is because I can't count the amount of people I've seen who start off with a larger calibre and pick up a bunch of really bad shooting habits straight off the bat.
As with anything else, it's harder to change bad habits than learn good ones to begin with.
If you've shot quite a bit before then go nuts, but if you are a first time shooter I believe you really should start with a 22 and learn the right way.
Just my 2c.

It's such a good wide use size too..
Was my pick from dad's collection unless we ment business..
Then it was the double barrel under over shot gun..
Didn't use the 223 to much.. just didn't need it..

I have probably put 200 odd rounds through a 22 before and a few threw some bigger rifles too, mainly target shooting. I've shot even more through a 12g
So I'm not brand new to shooting but haven't had a lot of experience.

If you havent had a lot of experience as you say yourself, then definitely go a 22. I put 200rds through my 22 the first day I brought it to the range.
I've also used the 22 a sh1te load more than I've used any of my other rifles or shotgun, or ever will for that matter. As westy said, it is an extremely versatile calibre.
A lot of people eschew them in favour of something bigger because people dont think of the 22 as a big boy gun, but they really are the best bang for buck(no pun intended) calibre you can get. Think of em like a leatherman, useful for a multitude of tasks.

The main reason I would buy a 22 would be price... I think it's gonna be a long time before I have a lazy $1500 to throw at a rifle, we'll see how I go.

Yeah pretty much. But shop around on prices.
Melbourne firearms in Ringwood are good but pricey, Claytons prices are better bit the service can be hit or miss. Gun emporium and centreway are good.
I've found that the redfield revolution(not revenge) scopes are awesome for the price. Made in the USA and owned by Leupold.

I have a Savage 22 and it came in a Package with a Scope, given what you are going to be doing with the 22 the package deals are pretty hard to walk past. A 22 with matched scope for $350 odd bux. I reckon you spend the coin on decent glass when its going on a bigger rifle like the 223 or 3006 as the recoil destroys the cheap scopes but the 22 is pretty soft. I have no trouble looking through the package scope on the 22. Has seemed to hold its line pretty well too.

Yeah. AB, same here. we had a Sportco semi auto 22, which was bloody good fun. The first shotty I was allowed to use was a 410 single shot, which had been a converted 303 army rifle. It was barely adequate for rabbits, but was great for quail. The safety mech stopped working and it went off, so my father disposed of the gun.

Good to see there are a few hunters on here.
Myself usual 22RF, 22 Mag, Beretta 687S.
But my favourites are a ZKW-465 Brno 22 K-Hornet custom build with Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50, Rem 700 22-250 custom build with Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50, AIA 308W M10B2 target rifle with Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50.
My new build is a Win P14 in 6.5 Epps ( 303 Brit necked down and Ackley improved with 35o shoulder angle ), Timney trigger, speed lock kit, 1:8 30" S/S Bartlien barrel, thumbhole stock , scope wise probably Vortex Razor. The list keeps going
Yes I'm into long range stuff and do most of my builds myself.

What you like to know Sooty.
I have found the Vortex Viper Pst's to be excellent scopes. Comparing them to the Razor, NF, Doctor etc the colour rendition isn't quite there but good enough I'm not using them to take photo's with. The old man has found the same and is running PST's on his 22 hornet and 20PPC rifles.
The stock on the 465 is a Jeff Slee Walnut XXX grade thumbhole that I did the finishing in Tru-Oil also pillars installed and bedded. Barrel wise blued Tobler 22" 1:14 twist and using 13gr of Hodgdon's Lil-Gun and 36gr Barnes varmint grenades, velocity wise doing doing 3150fps.
The 250 is laminated thumbhole made by one of the benchrest boys at Little River again same as the 465. Barrel S/S 26" TSE fluted just slightly heavier than the Rem varmint profile 1:12 twist. About to try Hodgdon's CFE-223 powder running 55gr Nosler ballistic tips.
The 6.5 Epps will be a monster 30" Bartlien barrel not sure what the profile number is straight taper down from the breach to the muzzle and the muzzle is 1.5" dia with a 1:8 twist to run 140gr Bergers or Hornady AMAX's. The action is a Win P14 ( or Enfield P14 ) it is the only action besides a Ruger No1 ( they did make them in 303 for a short time ) that will handle the pressure's I want to run to get the full benifet. Everything pretty much is custom even the pic rail I have to mill up to fit. The stock is a Richards Microfits from the US of A laminated thumbhole 3" wide for end which I will send to the stock maker to use as a pattern to make one out of walnut or tasy blackwood. The reamer is on its way from US of A and should be here shortly then the fun begins and also have to make my own dies as well.

Snafu thanks for that. No shortage of info there. I have heard good things about vortex vipers. I have an illuminated crossfire, not the greatest with the illumination on as it can glare a bit but for the price of it and its just on a bunny gun 22lr works well. I wouldn't mind trying to stretch out my .270win past 500m, and eventually get a more suitable long range rifle setup so it's good to see what others use. At the moment the main limiting factor for me is my rangefinder struggles above 650-700m and the hunting ballistic turret on the scope I have only has suitable adjustments for up to around 500m, but I am dropping roos consistently up to and just over that off the bipod.

The 270 Win is a good allrounder like the 2506, if the turrets only goto around 500m and you need to go further look into a 20MOA base. Another reason I like the PST's is the " ballistic reticle " hash marks every 1 MOA make hold offs easier and ranging ( if you know the size of the target ). But I prefer to dial for elevation but hold for wind as wind is a constantly changing.
The 6.5 Epps is being built for 1000y +, hopefully get the 140's running around 3200 fps maybe a bit more and with the BC's of the 140's at these speeds it will shoot flatter than a 300WM.
What scope you got on the 270Win ?
What I do is get the muzzle velocity using a Magneto Speed and the bullet's BC and run it through ballistic software. This give's me a head start on the ballistics then I head out with some bis 500 plate and do ballistic verification then I know the actual drops at varies ranges and make a note of.

Snafu I have a meopta meostar 3-12x56 w/ the meopta hunting turret added on. I currently have a basic chrono for measuring my velocities and use a few ballistics apps to verify against real ranges. Will get a bis 500 target soon for the long target shots. Yeah I hold for wind but only have a basic reticle so limited there as well. This rifle is really my all rounder used for varmints -> deer. Would like a more suitable long range hunting rifle and scope set up one day. I currently run vmax 110's @ 3300fps for light duties and I am working up a 150gn load for deer (previously used 130gn factory SP)

The Meopta line of scopes I have heard are good never actually looked through one thou. The Vmax's would be like dynamite on thin skin and the 150's should be good for deer.
I have only been on the deer once and at the time had to use my 308 target rifle oh wasn't that fun my arms ended up 3" longer. But got a sambar which my mate was most unimpressed as I was using 150gr NBT and took his head off. He wanted to get it mounted.
In regards to your long range is it for banging steel and target work or hunting ? The 7mm and 6.5's are great for long range and good variety of high bc bullets. Hunting wise me personally the 6.5 is good for long range varmint shooting but anything heavier I believe it lacks the knock down power. Even if using like nosler bonded bullets or the like your shot placement is very critical. This is were the 7mm has an advantage in knock down and good ballistics espicially in the relms on the 7mm STW and the like.
The 300wm, 300 rum etc are also good long range plenty knock down and reasonable ballistics as well.
A good read is the books written by Bryan Litz of Applied Ballistics he also is the ballistian for Berger as well.
sooty_10
30th July 2016, 04:08 PM
Snafu yeah eventually hunting. 300wm would be the most I would consider I think, obviously the 6.5/7mm would be cheaper to run for long range target. My mate has the Bryan Litz book so I will have to grab it off him and get stuck into it. Thanks for the advice.

I'd recommend a spotlight and go on foot, get a small battery (motorcycle or similar) and stay close to home at first. Once they've got a few easy pickings trust me they will be back and have spread the word.
Pick a moonless night and I found wind didn't really matter to much. I think my best effort in a few hours was five within 500 meters of the house and probably saw as many again but out of range. This was on foot and using a 22 magnum that night. I've also shot them by spotlight on foot using a shotgun but for that I needed someone to hold the spotlight.
They can be cunning and even raided the chook pen when I had the staghounds in the dog yard less than 20 meters away. You could hear them moving around the paddock near the house crying ( can't describe it as a bark) to check if the dogs were loose before they moved in.
They can also be stupid, I once shot a rabbit in broad daylight and a big dog fox ran out of the ferns and picked it up. He was in no hurry and didn't have time to take a step after looking around.
Whistling takes some practice, I've shot heaps this way as well but one might come at you at 100 kph at the first sound of the whistle and the next one would run away at the same speed.
Good luck.
Edit: Just read the link posted by MB and it states wind is important, we'll agree to disagree. It was never a major factor when spotlighting for me. (and I've been around longer than the author (just)).

BAHAHAHA Careful or you'll end up like that movie director who posed with the dinosaur and some very "smart folk" on the internet couldn't believe how he was allowed to hunt these animals and kill such a magnificent creature....
Finally got back into a bit more hunting myself. Made some new friends and ended up on a property and got myself a nice 100kg Boar. Was over the moon when we finally caught up with him. Also got another couple younger ones off one of my properties we have been visiting for a while now. Was stoked.
Then Friday night went out again and got 4 foxes. 1 we couldnt find but he went down hard. Other 3 were younger pups maybe 2 or 3 months old.

Chaps,
I use my GU for hunting and I’m wanting to build a gun rack where the third row of seats are. I’ve removed my third row of seats and use the rear of the wagon for storage. I’m considering welding up a frame from 20mm SHS and using the bolt holes of the third row seats as mounts.
The rack would carry 4-5 guns horizontally “stacked” on top of each other vertically in a “wall” immediately behind the second row of seats. Does anyone have experience with doing so or any experience building a similar device?
It would look something like a cargo carrier but with no mesh.

Before you go expending time and money i would look carefully into the laws around the transport and storage of firearms in vehicles. Its not like the god 'ole USA where every second vehicle in the Walmart carpark has a gun in a rack in the rear window! ( I saw this in Redmond Oregon, which is a backwater town in the NW of the USA and it was startling - no security at all apart from a locked door - maybe.) If it was me, I would contact your firearms division, and go speak with a firearms officer, with a set of plans for review - it could save you the angst if you get pulled up or inspected en-route or even when camping - especially around the 'secure location' requirements.

Duck was around 5 and the rabbits were around 10m.
Surprised how much punch these slingshots have.
He changed the rubber to a lighter one for more easier draw.

I finally got around to getting my license, it took about 4 months through covid but arrived just before new years.
Now just waiting on PTAs to come through for 2 rifles I have waiting for me at the gun shop... A Ruger American 22lr and a Tikka T3x Aspire in 300WM. Hopefully can pick them up next week!

Cheers, plan is to bust bunnies and foxes on a mate's farm which is close to home, and give Sambar stalking a go as well. Have also been invited to go with a hound hunting crew so will probably give that a go as well.

WOW, thats cheap. a box of 45-70's cost $139 8mths ago, and they were the last two boxes in stock, next sell price heading towards $160/box, which is bloody terrible. No more blowing up rocks or shooting to kill the river from now on!

I put 35 rounds through the 300 today and my shoulder is bloody sore now lol. Put about 200 through the 22, that was great fun. I learned a lot about how these rifles act at different ranges which was great, the BDC reticle in the scope on the 300 is fairly accurate to every 50m which is very handy.
There is a steel gong at 500m in this pic, I took 3 shots at it and hit it twice which I think is not bad for a low experience shooter.

FWIW: Feral eradication wise not too many decades long ago but all done and legally shut down now, I truly believe we might have had an honest system impact going up along the local Murrindindi grassy clearance power line feed.
Quietly putting along North bound popping Bunnies affront first, utilising older style smaller front winch hooks/neck hooks🪝 for speed of skinning/cleaning.
180 degree U-Turn after 1 hour and heading home we’d sadly have to precisely .22 take out Foxy Mumma/Puppa/Kit’s foolishly always eating the Bunnies previously left road center piles from a short hungry distance.

HAHA I know this gong well.
I was surprised last time i went (WAY to long ago) that the 243 shot flatter than the 3006. 243 were handloads and 3006 were factory but accurate enough.
That gong I played with for a little bit but managed to hit it with the 22 8 out of 10 shots. Point of aim in the scope was a boulder half way up that hill haha. Gong wasn't even close to being in view. Its always good getting out to the range.
I have a pretty good handload developed for the 223 atm which is why I just made 250 of em haha but can always hone then in a little bit. 243 I need to spend some time on. There was a time a while ago i could head shoot anything with that out to 300mtrs. But hasn't been accurate enough for a while now. The projectiles I had were unavailable for a long time so I went a different brand and just haven't spent the time on them yet.
I started reloads for the 3006 too but again just lost track of that so don't even know what the reloads are i have. will have to pull them apart and start again.

Pretty capable round but and if you got a fast twist barrel you can push 60-80gn pills pretty hard.

What is your technique? We used to find a few loud agonized whistles/screams, followed by subtle ones for a few minutes. Pause, and repeat. Got them close enough for the semi-auto (that's how long ago ) Sportco .22 to dispatch them. Once you had their attention we'd go steadily quieter to suck 'em in.
We copied a bought whistle, and made a few more.
Youtube has some videos on different techniques.

I don't do anything special or crazy, just blow away on the whistle and keep an eye out through the thermal. We've had them regularly run in to within 10m of us.
Modern "night vision" technology is absolutely game changing.
