Hi everyone, I am planning a big lap and I am thinking about some simple roll-over protection around Brisbane. Does anybody has any suggestions? Or know a small business that might be able to help out?

To be honest mate I would bother.
The work required to but one in is bugga all and the patrols handle roll overs quite well.
Evils mate had a double roll over a few weeks back, was damaged, but drivable..
I'll find some pics

I know hay.
I would be looking at a good step / slider setup and scrub bars.
Looks like roof rack took most the pain aswell.

wow ive seen a gq on its roof on the streets and it was way worse then that gu. So bad so the front of the roof was probably half the normal height

I think that GU was bloody Lucky! I have seen the A pillar crushed down.
If your keen the. I would keep a lookout for a ROPS out of a mine spec GU mate. You will pick it up for under $500 and it will bolts straight in. Should be plenty about in QLD?

cheers, I have a search out at gumtree and ebay but so far only found one for only the cargo area or landcruiser 100 which I dont think will fit. But i am not in a rush so will wait patiently. Havent found out how it would fit half way (so between the doors) and how easy it is to fit, any knowledge on this?

Id say the roof rack played a big part of holding the Patrol together,
but a lot of "ifs"
You could give Brown Davis a buzz and talk to Kevin about their ROPS

Good point on the roof rack. I have heard of Brown Davis stuff before. Point is that I will have my car for the big lap only so I am looking for a cheap solution. Obviously, safety is priceless but with all the other involved costs, a high end product as from Brown Davis is a bit out of reach.

they also make a decent bash plate.
Not entirely convinced a ROPS would be required for a lap.
only you can decide on that, I had an internal roll cage in my Troopy[TJM]

Dham it! oke, scratching launching over ularu off from to do list......
I am not 100% sure if it is necessary and its good to hear every bodies opinion on it.

yea its just knowing your only keeping the rig for a short time for the trip and keeping the $ spent to a min.

Agree with the others.
I looked into a cage after mine had a "sleep" (pics below), all the ROPS roll bars I could find at the time, severely restricted cargo space due to the rear brace bars, and they have a dodgy cargo barrier that does not cover the space you need to protect you from flying cargo, I soon gave up on the idea.
Having said that, the cost of getting a decent cage "made" to suit a family sedan (with compliance), would be heaps more than $500, its much harder than making one for a bush basher.

What is your budget? I have a 6 point cage/rops in mine, and have been thinking of pulling it out. The right $$$ would help me make the decision :)
n.b. like new condition, installed but never used for its intended purpose lol... almost did once... but my girlish squeal of terror must have flipped me back to a safer angle

I saw two rops for around 200 at gumtree (just in the wrong state) so figured something like that as budget but didnt take into account that installation might be expensive as well.

you dont think storing you winch control cable under your radiator isnt a bit strange steve?

If it is just you and your girl then grab a Milford Cargo Barrier and mount it behind the front seats and remove the rear seats. They advise that they provided added protection in a rollover. They are No ROPS but I reckon it would make a noticeable difference, maybe the important difference.

Think you will have a very hard time getting a traditional 6 point "approved" in QLD these days , I think they changed the rules about anything forward of the B pillar.
Of course the OP may not care about "rules", but.......making a insurance claim with illegal mods could be of concern ?
Would still love to see any pics you have of it installed in your car (more the better please)

Id say you could fit it pretty easy yourself , it will only be a few holes in the floor and some metal plates bolted in, but again, that's if you don't care about compliance etc.
EDIT : I also think some insurance companies will not insure any car/s with a roll cage , I guess it suggests the car is used for competition etc ?

Yep I reccon it would help a bit, I had one in mine when it rolled BTW, the rear of the roof hardly took any weight, so can't say I tested the theory, but anyway, regardless of holding the roof up a bit, the barrier sure stopped all the cargo coming through all over the place !

installation would be pretty simple, drill a few holes, get some M12 - 65x65x5 Sq washers from a hardware joint and all would be done, it would be the engineers cer that would be the expensive bit... The setup in my troll was $4500 inc eng cert (similar to this one, but less obtrusive between the front and back, plus another 2 pts/supports going into the rear luggage comp http://www.dnaoffroad.com.au/protection/roll-over-protection/nissan/nissan-patrol-gu-wagon-5-seat-6pt-rops.html )
with that said... I was thinking alot closer to the $1000 mark, sounds like we were both a bit off the average price lol

Will take some pics tomorrow, bit dark outside atm :(. Also, i just read about the B pilar, definitly in line with, and not forward of it... Mine is similar to this on, but with cros bracing at the front, and a single horizontal at the base of the rear. Cargo barrier removable. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Y61-GU-PATROL-WAGON-ROLL-CAGE-ROLL-BAR-/221433294231?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item 338e73ed97&_uhb=1&clk_rvr_id=632891647201

I am leaning more and more to not getting one. Not even sure how it works with insurance (although my car is already undervalued). A 4wd custom company quoted me 450 for a simple roll cage (2 points). Found also a beautiful one for the landcruiser 100 for just 100 bucks but yeah different size. I posted it here just to keep my eyes open. Good is that I get the impression that it is not required for my trip.
I want to keep the rear seats and have at the moment a half cargo barrier.
It sucks a bit that I cant invest in my car like when you have the car for years, but at least it forces me to keep it simple.

That eBay one looks like the standard Mine Spec I reckon, hang out and you will get one cheaper. I'd love to put something like that in my GQ.

A well fitted cargo barrier from Milford will save you in a roll over,
get one that fits behind the front seats,
