View Full Version : Roofrack Dilemma

I've gotten (qualified) permission from the minister of War and Finance to buy a roof rack for my patrol..
I'm currently weighing up 3 options
1. Alloy Tracklander - $1650 - quite simply the best there is. 32kg
2. S/H Steel Tracklander - $600 - heavy MOFO (47kg), but still a tracklander.
3. Midland Marine alloy rack - $700 - a couple of guys in the club have them and they seem to be ok
I'd obviously ideally go alloy tracklander, but that $1000 difference buys me an awning, maxtrax, jerry can holder & a shovel holder to go on the rack

Tracklander are great Jon, but for the price I would be checking out the Midland Marine and asking about their warranty mate.
It always comes down to money and how much you can save to buy other toys for your Patrol.

I might give them a call. Do you know anyone NOR who's got one of the MM racks? Ropes & GUFamily have them, but i think they're both down rocko way.

No sorry mate, ring them and ask them, they did a presentation to the WPC last year and seemed very knowledgeable about their products and very helpful as well.

anyone had any experience of the Rhino Pioneer Alloy Platform Rack (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_NISSAN_Patrol_Page_1_System_Pioneer-Platform-42104--R--Gutter-Mount_4634_4047.aspx)?

Gotta tell ya .. I like that rack - love the custom wrap around the spotties (bit restrictive to change size, but assume they would do it to whatever spec you had/wanted). That rack with side cages around the perimeter would be top dollar - extra mount at the rear also has to be a bonus for strength/weight distribution.

Would be no good for Jon's GU though, no channel along the back.
For the use that racks get go the Midland Marine one and spend the $$ on some other nice gear.
At the presentation MM also showed us awnings, shovel holders, etc and will even customise racks if you have a specific need.

Spoke to the bloke yet now. once i explained i was with the WPC, he was happy to talk! $800 for the rack with a steel wind deflector, it's meant to be stronger than the tracklander in many ways. sounds good. given that it's essentially a choice between a 5yo steel tracklander and this (the rhino platform gets expensive by the time you add on rails etc), i think the new one is a better bet.

Go have a look at them and a talk to them but I def think you are making the best choice (and NO I am not on commission).

I agree with Paul, think of the new toys that you can get with the money that you will save, but just make sure that you tell your wife that you got the expense one, she will get over it and you get the toys....win win

:D. I'm gunna buy an awning as well and that'll pretty much do me for now. I could do with a jerry can holder as well, but they seem to be f&#$%S expensive.

So today I went out and bought an ironman awning. I then drove down to midland marine (great fella, very helpful) and got them to drill holes in the new roofrack (for the awning) before i'd even paid for it!
New rack is very nice, good solid bit of kit, but very light as well.
I'll take some pics tomorrow in case anyone is interested.

No wonder the WPC forum has tumbleweeds blowing through it , people go everywhere else but there to ask for advice or for a chat , glad you got it sorted though .

It's a funny one really. I feel like a goose asking the same question in 2 different places when one of the places is pretty much a subset of the other. But you're right, I should have asked in both places :1087:
I'm happy with my rack (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2011/01/1.gif) though :p

No disrespect to the WPC forum at all (I've have not long joined there) but I do find this one much easier to navigate around. I haven't really worked out how to join in on the chats in the WPC forum....... I know it's just a matter of spending more time on there...... but I'm a sucker for taking the easy route

Hi
A big thanks to Rusty Nails and The Flying Badger for the ideas and discussion. We dropped in to Midland Marine (don't be put of by the yard next door). The Guy there was great got rack for 750 after spending a heap of time crawling over the track-lander, rhino etc. The solid frame and long channel insert did it for me, spreading weight over more than 6 points. Easy to lift on and off and position. Really happy with this locally built one.
Thanks again guys for this discussion.

Thanks RN
I have never had a roof rack before. We immediately noticed a turbulence noise at any speed above 60km/h. It does not have a piece of ali/plastic angled deflector (??) at the front and I soon hope to mount one.
I also think the chaps may have mounted the rack a little bit forward as there is still a moderate amount of room to move it towards the rear. I wondered if the air flow over the front window should angle roughly over the face of the roof rack front?
I was going to cut up a piece of glavo sheet to fit and bolt on. Does this help with the noise/turbulence.
Thanks
J
