Me and my mate have been having a heated debate between which is an better all round 4wd. Was curious if anyone has ever owned both and could give a comparison

Please see my sig line ;)

a nice comfy 80series body on a GQ Running gear would be nice! FAT but nice.

I have a mate who uses an 80series when we play Hard, everyone else is in a GQ. He has spent BIG BUX having Custom Diff Housings made so he runs GQ diff centres, CVs and Axles under his 80! Go figure. Loves his 80 though!

Tell your mate he is delusional. A fact is a Fact. Nissan Patrol run the strongest running gear of any production 4x4 in the Australian Domestic market. The only thing stronger than a GQ running gear is GU Running gear ;)

YOU WIN the DEBATE.

A while back we went out and in our convoy was a well set up 80, it kept getting hung up on things my stock height gu with only 33's idled thru with ease! Plus toyota haven't changed their seat design in 50 years makes land crabs a harsh ride lol

Wow, a comparison where nobody has mentioned Liquorice and Cheese. So I will.

Toyota chassis and drive line components are made of liquorice and their diffs are made of cheese. Nissan uses steel for these important parts.

Having had a couple of GQ's and an 80 series I was tempted to post a comprehensive comparison but BA has summed it up perfectly in 1 line so no point now.

Yeh the runnin gear was my argument too. Had a few mate chuck Chevys in their cruiser utes just to blow up gear boxes and the rest.

While looking for my first 4wd I looked to my mates that had gqs and 80s...........

I bought a gq.......

A mate that has owned 3 80s finally got a q and keeps saying things like "wow" lol......

Everybody knows a Gq has stronger gear, everybody knows a gq has a longer lasting engine (even in petrol!), the 80 series drives better on bitumen and around town, the gq is a better balanced 4wd exhibiting superior tyre grip, handling and articulation....... So which is a better 4wd?

I run a 91 gq, father in law a 94 yota 80..

I've done over half a million k's and have all original running gear..

Inlaws 80 had 350 thou and had both diffs, radiator and clutch done...

The obvious price difference too! With money saved on a gq purchase you could do lift and lokka then really piss on the Toyota

You don't need to though with the superior LSD in the rear of a patrol.

How does patrol have better tyre grip ?

Yeah sorry that wasn't real clear lol.
I meant that the way they are better balanced seems to helps with grip. The power gets to the ground

well all I could say to this is theres mechanic at work with a 105 series he will tell you straight that the Nissan is stronger and the horror stories of all the crap he had to do to make it strong making his own spacers for his diffs to stop them disintegrating going back to an earlier gearbox installing a bigger clutch this is the real horror had to re pin the flywheel and then get the bellhousing machined out for it to fit. shit all this to make it not as strong as a Nissan.

How does patrol have better tyre grip ?

Well, the Cv's on a patrol don't explode on contact with loose ground, so that allows the wheels to turn and grip in :-)
