Just came back from our first trip west fully loaded and found the dogs were starting to put a few scratches in the rear bumper as they jump in and out of the vehicle (not an issue around town only when they need to get up over the fridge and
Has anyone been able to replace or cover this patch with something? Im thinking I can rivet some thin checker plate alloy to the main places.

I would guess you could get a replacement part.
But would a quick coat of paint be easier and fix the marks??

Might want to try that vinyl wrap material some use.
I am going to do the side bumpers when I get a chance.
Or as you suggest if you can use alloy checker plate all the better

Thanks Threedogs - ill have a look at that stuff; I will also have a look at rhino lining. I had that stuff sprayed on the sills of my old patrol to stop stone chips and it worked a treat, will post results when I get around to it.
If anyone has removed their bar and has an inside photo I would appreciate it.
Cheers

I was under the impression that the later model GU rear bar was one piece, and the step/grip part is simply not painted like the rest of the bar ?
You can get a product called BUMPER COAT/SPRAY from the auto shops, its comes in a few different brands, but has a black textured finish and is easy to spray, ive used it for plastic rear bar steps before and it works well, and looks good too.

I would look at the Contact Vinyl Wrap for the step tread too mate. for sure. Easy to replace, you can buy a spray / Roll on product that you can peel off easily too.

Yeap that's right, all one piece on the GU8. Might be difficult to vinyl wrap as it's a rougher texture to the rest of the bar and has a type of non slip finish, might be different on other models.

If the tread has as high a peaks as i remember, no wrap will last long before bubbles appear in the lower corners of the tread peaks, to be honest , i doubt you would ever get it to mould around the tread peaks nicely in the first place ?

This was part of my original concern (peaks and getting something to stick); Ill see what checkerplate I can find/mould and go from there.
If anyone else has tried and had success or failure please let me know.

The link to the paint above will work find on the tread. Tape up and spray on or brush on. Several coats. Dries hard. When you done peal it off.
*** edit. I. Elieve this is the right product. What I describe I know is available as my nephew has painted his motorcycle engine in a paint that peels off. I will contact him and confirm. Very impressive product.

Confirmed. Plastidip is the go. Auto arm sell it but cheaper on eBay. Don't buy from an overseas seller as it will. Of get through customs in an aerosol

While i like checkerplate for a lot of things, i think it will look "very ordinary" on a factory plastic bar, id say a spray on product will be the go, especially if you don't want to get laughed at @ campsites :)

HHMMMMmm one piece wonder if it would fit early GU's ??
If I had your model I'd get a piece of alloy checker plate welded
to suit the contours of the wheel cut out ETC. Then either leave it polished or powder coat
to your OE colour
