Yeah the gap shown in the first pics is what it looked like after I cut the plates off to show the angle difference. That's how much I had to trim. Got them pretty close.

You've mounted them the same as I did on the troopy, I drilled and tapped 4 holes with 1/2" UNC thread,
in the corners of some 12mm square plate, then welded those plates [3] to the chassis then bolted the
steps to them. Must admit as you would know they are as strong as. You can jack the whole side off
the ground they are THAT strong.

No name cooking spray is way cheaper than anti splatter, smells better too LOL

Ok been busy under the hood over the last month. I am getting a few things sorted while it's parked up. I am getting it ready for a bigger airbox and hopefully a stainless snorkel through the bonnet at some point.

I have moved the Fuel Primer pump and the vacuum tank to the drivers side and stripped a heap of other crap off the fire wall. I removed the clutch bleed hose and tube and replace the hose and block to allow for the removal of the extra bleed.

This is a Big Job and will take some nutting out to put Humpty Dumpty back together again but it's getting there

Before.

5211552116

Fuel primer now attached to drivers side battery tray just above the fuel pump. The copper fuel pines across the fire wall are gone.

521185211952120

I relocated the vacuum tank and used the copper tube as the primary supply to the tank rather than from the tank just to the clutch

5212152122

Getting there

5212352124

Stripped out the clutch bleed valve as it's pointless. Phill at the 4WD Shed sells a replacement hose and block without the bleed for the win.

52125

Removed the redundant dual battery solenoid and wiring and pulled back a few wires that were no longer being used.

I am going to move the fuse block and have to remount it and sort out al the accessories that were going to the second battery that no longer exists. A bit to do yet but it's coming together

From this

Hi Mudrunner,

Please can you put up some more pics if you have them of the current positions of all the fuel lines and clutch etc and how you managed to mount them? I'm keen to add a snorkel and dual battery setup under the hood on the passenger side. The clips holding the current lines are all buggered on my GQ so I would see moving these as a win-win.

Cheers, Chris

So did a bit to my weld on rack on Sunday. I am going to add a flat rack to the back so I can carry a bit of fire wood or whatever. The cross bars are there so I might as well.

This is how I bought the bar work

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/257.jpg

I cut it off that roof some time ago and have been planning it for ages. Time to get it done.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/258.jpg

So I'm going to add 5 bars running front to back then weld mesh on top of that. As I said, it will not change the height of the rack at all so I might as well.

I cleaned off the paint at the 5 points so I could weld the new tube on.

I test fitted the first one.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/259.jpg

So I don't have a notching machine but watched a pretty cool YouTube vid a few months ago which explained notching without a notcher well. Piece of piss!!

So. This is how it's done.

________________________

Measure your tube diameter.

My tube was 25mm.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/260.jpg

This system uses 1/3s. Divide the diameter of your tube into 1/3s. My tube is 25mm so 8mm is approx 1/3.

My tube needs notching at both ends so I ADD. 1/3 to both ends (16mm) and cut to length.

Put a mark on top and bottom of tube dead centre. (The longest part of the notch)

Now put a ring around the tube 1/3 back from the end (8mm on my tube)

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/261.jpg

Now place the tube in your cut off saw. Centre mark straight up. You want to set the angle of the cut to be end of tube at the centre line back to cutting on you 1/3 line on the side.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/262.jpg

Then spin the tube over and your bottom centre Mark will let you do the opposing cut.!!

Your Done!!!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/263.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/264.jpg

Clean the up with a grinder if needed!

Straight off the cut off saw!!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/266.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/02/267.jpg

Come up good I think. Need to clean up my welds and weld the mesh on top. Then strip all the paint off it and prime and paint ready to weld onto my roof!!

Killed the Wasps! Finally. Took a couple of goes.

Last few weeks I have organized a bottle of Argon/Co2 Lite as this Gasless Welding is rubbish! Got it going but really junky welds.

Priced Buy versus Rent! Rent wins hands down.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/04/15.jpg

The buy price was expensive and the Refill price was Rude!!!

I ended up with a Rental E size bottle at $19 a month and $73 per change over. No contract, month to month. I can drop it back any time. If I not going to use it for 3 months it's cheap to give back a half full bottle.

Bargain I reckon!!

Well dragged out the mesh today past the wasp nest. Cleaned up the Gasless welds and cut and welded the mesh.

I like the under slung as the light is well protected. My previous setup was the same.

Tried a few different options to strip the paint (all expensive) the Wire wheel worked a treat. Lethal but effective!

PPE was ear plugs, safety Glasses, full face shield over glasses and hat. Nasty bit of kit is the wire wheel! Spits all day.

Looking good mate. Did you try a flap disc I've found them the best at removing paint so far?

Yeah I tried a Flap disk, an abrasive disk like a hard sponge thing, the wire wheel was by far the most economical and least aggressive on the tube. I used a flap to clean things up after grinding.

With all the internal angles and mesh the other options wore down pretty quick and really did take steel off too. The wire wheel just stripped the paint. Was a slog though!

So after it dried for a week I was not happy with the finish. The long nap roller left a stipple finish that was going to sh1t me forever so last weekend I rubbed it back with 1000grit wet n dry, then rolled it with 2 coats using a foam roller. So soo much better. Pain in the area but much happier with it and it's ready to mount.

Now to the rear bar...........

I have decided I don't want to risk making a centre recovery point again so I have fitted the H&R tow at off the GUIV to the GQ.

THIS IS NOT A DIRECT BOLT UP!

The GQ tow bar bolts to the side of the chassis rail with 2 bolts. The GU tow bar bolts up under the chassis with 3 bolts..... I can make that work!!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/20.jpg

I used so angle I had to weld nuts to to use inside the chassis rails.

First I drilled the holes in the angle and bolted it to the tow bar then welded the nuts in place.

Hey Toddie, it's a direct Weld On Permanent rack.

It welds along the gutter and roof as a roof slider and welds to the A Pillar at the front.

Here is a pic off the guy I bought the original rack from and have modified it to suit with the rear to be utilized for a bit of fire wood it needed.

So I had to drill 14mm holed up into the bottom of the chassis to mount the GU tow bar. I'm pretty stoked with how it's come up.

I wire brushed and painted the towbar before mounting it.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/31.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/32.jpg

Today I cut off the factory tie down points off the back as they are in the way and not required.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/33.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/34.jpg

Then I made a start on my new rear bar. I bought some 100mm wide flat plate 16mm thick to use as the mounting plates and will incorporate a recovery point at each chassis rail too.

In between it Pissing down rain today I got a little bit done.

I will make the middle of my new bar the same as my old one with C channel as I like the look.

The mounting plates.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/35.jpg

Marked out and centre punched ready to be drilled in steps.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/36.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/37.jpg

Now the 25mm recovery hole suitable for a shackle. The plate is 16mm thick and I left 25mm of meat in front of the hole. I consulted 3dogs about this and he reckoned that would be fine.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/47.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/48.jpg

I'll grind the radius later.

Cut and test fitted the C channel

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/49.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/50.jpg

Measured, marked and drilled the holes for the 4 mounting points across the back where I have previously welded nuts on for my last bar.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/51.jpg

I have also decided I will cut the end of the towbar off behind the pin hole and per mantle mount a new hook into the tow bar tube with new longer bolts through from the top like the removable one but permanent.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2016/05/52.jpg

Getting there.

Hi Kallen,

To be honest i Ummm'd and Arrrrr'd about this for a long time. I took a heap of measurements of my old bar and the tow bar and there was very little in it. The old bar hung down and the tow point stuck out almost the same distance.

When i made the rear bar originally it was about 12 years ago. I Over Engineered it heaps and was / am confident that it is a Strong bar and up to the task. Well tested too i tell you. Back then though i knew less than i do now about Snatching forces off the tow point. No discussions then really about Tow Balls (well a little).

So this option removes all doubt i may have and i know for sure there is No Risk. I have managed the Risk as much as i can.

Note also the Significant Damage to the bottom of the LRA Tank!!! The Tow Bar fully protects the tank now and this damage will be almost Impossible to occur again! Big Winner and probably the deciding factor.

Once bolted up with the hook in it looks like it sticks out heaps!! But with the new rear bar on too it will not look at bad. I will cut about 150mm off the end of it and that will actually mean it will be a better departure angle than before!!! add the 37s and its a win.

The new Hook will be permanently mounted the same way as it is in that receiver but straight through the Towbar with holes drilled from the top through to the bottom so t will be very snug.

And yes I guess departure angle isn't an issue when running monster truck tyres lol..

I wish. Nah not a chance unfortunately. I still have a fair bit to do and keen to drive this winter. Given the state of affairs with defects and Police these days it will most likely be a Night Drive car. Lucky I LOVE NIGHT DRIVES!!!

Yes it is mate. I have Kaned it to mate! Great bit of kit. Rate it highly! It has been my primary recovery point for 13 years.

I will pack out a new hook the same way inside this tube. I like the hook as you can hook up in a hurry if needed.

Yeah that was the idea behind it, if your sinking you can hook up and hopefully be on your way again.
Id think Ive made 5000 of them over the years, even have a bolt on one on the back of my Patrol.
Like the pipe work BTW

Yeah when I drowned my GQ In 2003 the water was over the roof on the drivers side and upto the glass on the passengers side. I was using a pin only in the rear towbar and unfortunately my mate couldn't find the pin to insert the snatch strap in chest high water. By the time he hooked me up I was a writeoff. Had I had a hook the water inside would have been maybe to my knees.

I bought your hook the following week.

Not bad for a pen pusher... 😂
JK.. it's looking awesome mate..
One little bit I would add, and you maybe onto it or going vertical to your rack, but to give that rear 1/4 bar a little more strength add a bit of tube or plate to join the rear 1/4 to slider on the outside egde.. Sorta like a continuation peice. .
That'll make a triangle and give a bit more strength against it..

Yeah to be honest I actually planned to buy that notched and use a hole saw. I saw a YouTube vid on hand notching and figured it's not hard so I didn't bother.

If I was doing a complex cage or something then I'd have grabbed the notcher for sure. My mate who owns the bender has that notcher and I could have grabbed it to.

Got a bit done on the weekend. So everything is tacked up right.... So I need to unbolt everything and remove all the bar work off the car to get a heap of welding and grinding done ready for paint. I unbolted the rear bar and stupidly tried to remove it alone and broken the left darling wing off!! Grrrrrr. Cleaned it up and got Naomi to hold it while I tacked it again. Needless to say Naomi helped me unbolt everything.

Yeah pretty good mate. Playing around with the feed settings a little but the power setting has worked a treat. This bar work is a good job to tune it on as most of it's the same, a grinder fixes everything. :p

Have concentrated on slowing it down when welding to the 16mm to really get a pool into the plate. Hopefully I have achieved some penetration.

So I have been super slack with the GQ and all my bar work has sat in the back yard with surface rust all over the raw steal. I lost motivation.

I'm back into it after a weekend in the highcountry in rossco's GQ and a huge recovery the following weekend got me itchy to get muddy.

So found some motivation and for on the grinder and wire wheel and did the final clean up.

I stripped my bullbar again as the water based paint I used didn't like the UV much and went a little cloudy. I hate oil paint to use but have bit the bullet and using a quality oil based enamel etch primer and now an Oil based enamel.

3" foam roller I have found is by far the easiest way to paint bar work.

Well I've been a bit slack with the GQ but found some motivation over the last few weeks.

First thing was to get my head around the car again! Figuring what was what was actually a pretty big deal!!

Fresh eyes over everything and retrace things to figure out what I did 8 years ago and what I didn't like about it.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/11/60.jpg

I've redone my Air manifolds and added the Air Freespool into the mix. Reconfiguring my switches for new tasks and making sure there is nothing left out and all will work.

Setting up a buzz bar near the single battery will tidy things up well with options to add.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/11/61.jpg

I have stripped off my water to air heat exchanger off the bonnet and bought a new one and front mounted it.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/11/62.jpg

I organised for my nephew to come down today for some heavy lifting. I needed to figure out if the winch would fit with the front mount in place so finally dragged out my sexy highmount and fitted it to the bar. Bloody heavy got really bloody heavy!!

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/11/67.jpg

Off with the old bonnet which I will try and sell.

How much clearance do you have between heat exchanger and highmount? Keep in mind the body will move being on rubber mounts and may cause contact.

Yeah I have cut the back out of the weld on brace kit and have about 10mm. Should be ok. The bar is just sitting there now but when I.bolt.it up I will make sure it's forward as far as I can get.

Should be ok, my IC is about 8-10mm from the brace.

Nice one Daz getting there. What is the heat exchanger, is that a water to air thingo for the intercooler ?

Just did a few things with my winch and is all sitting pretty snug now but still has about 10mm clearance. Was better than with the old bar tho the ratchet was sitting bout 1mm off the intercooler which is a bit close for comfort but luckily didn't give any issues.

Yeah mate it's exactly the same as the one I had under the bonnet but that one was damaged. From rubbing. With the removal of the body lift I could no longer close the bonnet. If this did not fit I would take out the air con.

Very cool. It's a boot lid with 100s of layers of paint that he has then distressed and cleared. Turns out he is a Lecturer at TAFE in spray painting and also an industry consultant.

What your looking at was the boot lid he used to demonstrate spray painting. Layer upon layer. On the left side the paint was 15mm thick and looked like funky plywood.

Picked his brain for an hour about spraying the car. Winner. Then he picked my brain for an hour about fixing his 120yo house... Winner.

Did a little more to the GQ yesterday. Cleaned out more wiring. Removed tr he old corner airbox. So much room now!! Relocated the W2A pump again.

Went to Repco on a 30%off RACV day and bought 10m of 10amp 7 core trailer wire that I will run up to the roof to wire up the side lights rear camp lights.

Test fitted the new Lightforce Genisis HIDs. Need to buy some 20mm spacer as the bolt holding the winch hoops on is in the way of the Huge mounts of these Genisis.

Was a little slack this weekend but did get out today and spent some time in the GQ.

I scored another Bonnet with the snorkel which was already cut for the through bonnet snork but as is often the case the guy have just hacked out the hole with his teeth and left it exposed with rough edges. It was never going on my car like That!!!!

So off with the bonnet today and I cleaned it up

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/02/30.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/02/31.jpg

Used some cardboard and shaped it into the cut and marked put a template.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/02/33.jpg

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/02/36.jpg

I got the mig out and tack welded. Played around with the welding settings alot which was great to tune it in for Panel steel. NO I took no pics of welds [emoji14]

Looks pretty good. I ground it nice and neat. I sprayed it with a primer and can see I need t9 touch up a couple of sections of weld that I ground out. There ain't much steel there!!

Looks heaps better

Serviced the GQ yesterday. Dropped the oil and replaced the oil filters and fuel filter. I gave everything a once over. Made sure there was nothing random laying amongst the engine bay.

Today I turned the key and it cranked back into life like it was parked up yesterday. Not a puff of smoke. Went straight into idle and purred. I used the hand throttle to lift the idle to 2000rpm after it warmed for 10 minutes and bled the cooling system for 40 minutes.

Very very happy.

I am sure it exists, just can't be driven on the road or during the day unless surrounded by hundreds of acres of bush!!!! Kind of like a 'Bladerunner type of vehicle'!!

Huge weekend on the GQ. Im knackered. Whole car is Sanded. The roof rack is welded on and bog and sand and bog and sand and I think most of the panels are straight. Had a couple of creases in doors that have been a bastard to flatten out but we are done.

Spent an hour at Bunnings reading sikafflex and alternative labels and then googling product codes to get the right goo for the roof. Had to be the most expensive stuff!!!

I need to fill this valley.

Got the pressure washer out and washed down the car. We are nearlly ready. I will sikafflex tomorrow night and paint next weekend.

Conscious that it's rubbed back I really wanted paint on but just ran out of time. Was out at first light today and just hav ing dinner now.

So I set up a tent I have that I was going to use as a spray booth. Not sure it's going to work as it's a bit short but it will protect it for the week hopefully and I will see if I can lift it somehow next weekend when it's going to be 30degrees again.

Into the booth and finish the taping and cleaning with wax and grease remover and tak cloth

Looks sweet Darren. Have you, or, will you be putting a clear coat on? Sorry I got no idea with painting. I think a clear is just to make the paint more durable I think...
Nice job though mate. I'd love to paint my Patrol black. Lol.

YAY, nice. Looks bloody smick had a little go at paining doing the rear quarter chop then realised wasn't for me, turned out terrible. Can't wait to see it back together bet it looks awesome, would have been a bit nerving driving the gauntlet over there. .

Haha. Yeah it was. The cop shop is basically at the end of my street damn it. 10:30 friday night. Naomi in the GU drove up the road and back then i pulled out in front of her and we drove in tandem out to the property. The GQ had head lights but no tails. Was over in a couple of minutes. Had plates on.

So went over ans stripped the the tape and plastic off tonight. The paint is not as good as i hoped but has full cover and will scratch just as well as perfect paint so its good to go.

Nah no chance mate. A little too public. Not a family car either. GU will be perfect for that trip.

Some of us could go and do a night run in it? If I were to make it the 62 could tow it out there....

So went out to the car today and thought stuff it. The paint will never be this clean again so I rubbed it back and taped up the car from the bottom of the windows down.

3 more coats of paint and I'm much happier.

They can be bastards. They can enter my backyard and give the car a canary if it is wearing numberplates.

Few of rhe guys i know who trailer to the bush leave plates off when on the trailer and fit them in the bush only.

So i thought bugger it. I draped 2 drop sheets over the roof and down the windows and taped along the bottom of the windows. Happy with the pillars. Didnt take long to sort that out.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/04/188.jpg

I hit the panels with the random orbital and 320 grit and flattened off the paint which also didnt take to long then started again.

I used a bit more thinner and tuned the gun a little better. I flash coat and 2 heavy coats. Weather was perfect to paint.

Looks s#!t hot Daz, can't wait to see it all together.

N15 track looked awesome in the snow, I was hoping for some footage of the river crossing but. . Or any pics? ?

As wicked as all the tracks were the other weekend was all pretty stress free being crazy dry at the mo, different story in the wet. . .
