Yes by themselves they are too short.

But. The Nissan base adds another 25mm plus the bump stop at 80mm fully compressed I had 105mm and needed 150mm total.

The bump stops fully compressed at80mm had already taken a fair hit to compress to that though.

So I made a bottom block and added it to the bump plate

32347 3234832349

Looks sweet and a good combined length

323503235132352

Now just need to check the front and flex her up!!

Have you flexed it up yet? Is that lower bump stop wide enough, mine are the width of the factory plate and only just touch, If mine were that width they would miss

Hmmmmm! Well that Sux! No and I will certainly be having a look when I get a chance mate.

On straight down compression which I think is where most of the damage has happened I think they will be fine. Bloody Whoopdy Doos mate are a killer at speed.

I'll let you know for sure mate

I hate whoopdy doos! Was riding with my mate in his Daihatsu F20 and a whoopdy doo came out of nowhere, we got air big time and bounced back up on two wheels, back doors flew open and his stuff rolled out everywhere and we both had BIG headaches after that one. Was funny as FARK though!

Yeah the bumpstops line up if the whole axle moves vertically as one. When one wheel compressors and the other extends they are out by a little bit.

Lol. Nah mate once you have broken an axle then smashed the CV on the other side in the first 12 hours of an extreme weekend the last thing I wanted to do was break another half way up some stupid steep hill in Noojee. The wallet felt it later though for sure!

After that outing I bought the GU diffs with the bigger CVs. Better not break these!

I have a spare set of GU long and short tied to the cargo barrier now though ;)

at the end of the day there is a total of 3 pics in this thread that are not my car and its those 3. I was the second car through that hole behind the car you can see the front on pic of which i have already declared was not me at that point in the thread. The car in the pics going in and at the bottom of that hole was the car behind me. I winched through then got out and went back and took those Farking Insane pics of his!!. He has pics of mine in the same position and i have never been able to grab a copy. Waiting Waiting ;)

At the end of the day his car was at that time was Identical to mine in every way including the same roof light rack other than his is a light champaign Gold colour. You cant even pic the colour difference in the pics ;)

I have 50W XGT HID on the GUIV and they are insane so 50w for the GQ should be heaps. i ummmed and arrrred about going to a 75w or even a 100w but the price doubled then quadrupled and will suck the guts out of the batteries so went with the 50w and think they will be great.

woooooo hoooooo! the Gu Steering box has just arrived! Now to fine time to fit it this weekend! Its only a short list ........ Really it is......

Finish the Flares,
Design, make and fit the Mudflaps. These ones will last more than a single drive damn it!!
Fit the new Steering box.
wire up and fit the Switch, relay and wiring for the spot lights waiting for the HID kit and so i just need o fit the lights when they arrive
Rebuild the Himount and then fit it to the car
Clean the inside of the car
finish the bog up of the rear quarter panel and blow a little paint over it
roll out the swag and add some more insulation to under the mattress.
make sure my Diff Breathers are fully connected after the diff swap and that my lockers are functioning correctly.
Pack the car
look after the 2 kids as the wife is working full shifts all weekend

The same deal in the Otways! nothing worth driving in there unless your of the grid. most has been permanently shut or made into a Blue Diamond Track.

Our Club ran an event in the Otways every year for many many years and catered for Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme. about 4 years ago we had to relocate tot he Mt Cole area as there was simply nothing left to drive beyond Easy Medium.

Yeh its a shame, all of the tracks around my way have been closed, the only way you will go offroad here is with a portable angle grinder / bolt cutters and do it illegally, which I don't believe helps our cause so won't do.

About 4 years ago we rolled out a Track Classification system in Victoria. then the DSE and Parks vic ran out of money and it all got put in a Drawer. Unfortunately they really missed an opportunity to engage the 4x4 community as their classification system went from Green, Blue, Black Double Black, from memory. the problem is that the Double Black is where we want to Start not finish! and it did not take much to make a track into a Double Black. it was a Mess. Because the system ends at double Black there is simply no way of grading say a Double Black (DB) level 1 track (Just a DB) that you'd get through if you were trying hard enough in an AWD Soft Roader and the Extreme end at say DB9 where there should be an obstruction that requires a certain level of vehicle and driver to attempt even to get on the track.

They chose to leve it as just DB! I lobbied hard to ad the numerical grading to the DB to give the system some level of perspective but they were not listening! What they Wanted! and what they Got was a system that would allow them to provide an Iconic 4WD Track system in Victoria that could be graded as Blue and allow every Mum and Dad in their AWD Territories to tackle with the kids on the weekends! What a Waste.

So i am a Certified Track Classifier. Did the Course. Got the certificate. Never got off the ground.

Gotcha, have never heard of a track classification system for dse / parks, shame it never got off the ground

I have a mate thats right into Mountain Bike riding esp downhill riding, we use to live next door to each other a couple of suburbs away from where I am now, there is some bushland that goes down the mountain side just down the road which over the years got turned into a downhill track about 1 year ago now council came along and erected no mountain bike riding signs on the track!. He has worked long and hard to get permission off council to find somewhere local and finally got permission to built a track at another location that wasn't 2 far away. Mind you this was one area that was closed down to 4wd access many years ago

Its not just four wheel drivers coping it these days!

Well with your certification, what would you rate Barkly river Jeep tk?

Well the System will certify it as a Double Black Track! If they adopted a numerical scale of DB1 through to DB10 being the most extreme I reckon BRJT would be about a DB6 or DB7 because its drivable without a winch stage.

Go with 7,thats means I've done a DB7 on all terrains without winching lmao

which clearly shows the ranking system is totally flawed! lmao

Clearly!

And the ranking system was always on an assumed Dry Track. So Brewry would be a BD6 too and drivable in the dry with ATs on but a 3 or 4 stage winch in the wet! How do you put that on a sign!

I attempted it in the wet. Got 50m up and went to set the winch up and had a think about it, the cars that were with me were certainly not up to the task! So we backed down (which was a mission in itself)

going through a similar thing with a mate at the moment. He just got a dual cab hilux (yeah i know) and ive taken him on pretty much the same few tracks in the same area 3 weekends in a row. First weekend he said "these things are way better than patrols, it goes anywhere!" (i didnt have the heart to tell him i was taking all the easiest tracks and it was fairly dry) and each weekend since its been raining flat out and getting slowy harder and harder. We are going out tomorrow and i plan on having a proper play (because two other trol mates are coming to help me out if bogged lol) and old mate in the hilux is gonna have a hard time of it i reckon:)

Well its bloody cold out side! Just refitted the Rebuild Himount and it works and is ready for Rope! New 6hp motor, Full brake shaft rebuild kit, lower housing rebuild kit, sand blast and a paint. Looks neat.

To save me unbolting the front bar to fit it in i have to fit it in 2 pieces. Top hat off. bolt up the bottom half then fit the top hat and motor. Of course it starts raining between bolting the bottom up and fitting the top hat. Head Torch on, out with the Umbrella and she'll be right mate. Damn i need a Shed the GQ will fit in!! Killing me!

Gathered all my camping gear and recovery gear and insulated the swag ready for the Snow trip this weekend. Still got allot to do but 1 day at a time. Time for a shower and Bed.

I have two mates running hid retro fitted into GU 1 and they both have had a pretty bad run. I'm unsure of the brands they've used. One guy had a cheap brand and had to rreplace the ballast twice so then forked out more for an expensive brand and that developed an intermittent fault after a while.
Have you had any problems with hid's? And do you think that brand you got above will prove itself?
Id like to get some hids but I'm worried they would fail when I'm from home!

I think Darren's putting them in some driving lights so not a huge issue of failing when away from home as he'll still have his headlights.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with HID's in headlights for a number of reasons. The two main ones being, more attention from Police and having a ballast issue causing one or possibly two of your headlights to not work.
One of the other issues is, the majority of headlights are not designed to run a HID bulb and emit spurious light which is not pleasant for oncoming traffic or at times the driver of the vehicle with reflections off signs etc.

Winnie
20th August 2013, 11:42 AM
Lucas, I've got HID headlights with a polycarb diffuser. In the car when I bought it but never had a drama with them and they are aimed down and I have never been flashed by anybody coming the other way. I do find myself turning them off as much as I can when driving through towns so police don't notice but that being said I've driven past plenty of police before and no dramas.

I have run hid headlights for 5 years without a problem purchased off Internet. The only reason I have taken them off is the police issue. They have done the gibb, tanami, oonadatta, birds vile, tracks and plenty of high country river crossings over bonnet high about 200,000 km in total, I did carry spare headlight globes to put in if they did fail but never needed to use them, you will need to adjust your headlights to not blind other drivers. Oh and I just put the same kit in a set of driving lights to try out this weekend.

Yes mine is a daily driver, took them out as I heard the Mansfield police were pulling over all 4x4's in town and doing roadworthy's on them, I no longer go to Mansfield though. I like to keep my car a bit of a sleeper, also just worked out it was 7 years not 5 , best lights I ever had.

I have tested the headlights and driving lights and here are the photos,
haven't aimed them yet as car was unloaded.
photo 1: 55w halogen low beam (narva intense)
photo 2: 55w low beam /35w HID low beam
photo 3: 65w halogen high beam
photo 4: 65w high beam/ 35w HID High beam.

As you can see there is a big difference between standard halogen and HID.
Something to consider when travelling at night in Camel country.
I would say that HID is not required in the city though.

Yes the rear bushed joint is a winner for sure. That is straight from an 80 series front end design! On of the few things Toyota got right!!! Shhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone I said that! ;)

The Hybrid looks to be a combo between their Drop arms and the rear joint /drop box design. Looks good Bene! Will be giving them a good look at in October for sure mate

Ow ok.. Interesting.. I would have thought the Patrol pin setup would flex more than the opposing pin and Bush.
The patrols arms rotate easier, sure droop is not as good. The toyo setup would droop nice, but would struggle crossing up..
To me flex is the ability to cross axles, not straight drop..

They are 100mm longer than a standard drop arm and the rear bush change is to promote better bush life, as when your flex the pin type a lot the bushes flog really quick. The length helps with stability again and also flex while the 80's bush will give good bush life ;).

nissannewby
3rd October 2013, 01:05 AM
Also good flex isn't just about one side tucking hard and other dropped to its limits but good flex will allow the vehicle to stay level while the suspension goes through its travel. You want the suspension to do the work anytime your chassis angles over you have reached maximum flex and you have no suspension left.

megatexture

So 100mm longer do you need to extend the front driveshaft or is this distance gain at the chassis end.

yes it is at the chassis end Mega.

If you have a look at this pic and note that the top mount is in line with the factory mount (in fact it connects to this position for strength) and the bottom mount is set 100mm back.

http://www.superiorengineering.com.au/img/newsletter/New_style_Superflex_arms_pair_wat.jpg

and here is a standard Superior Drop Box. the top mount is consistent between the two pics

Isnt that last pic standard arms with a drop box

yes. It was the best pic i could find showing the standard drop box location position for the rear joint of the radius arm. you can see that a standard drop box just drops the pivot only inline with the factory setup. the Hybrid that Bene has sorted pushes that back 100mm below the gearbox support.

BigRAWesty
3rd October 2013, 10:34 AM

Couldn't agree more. Just in my eyes the patrol setup is like a pin in a sleeve, the arm will rotate all day long allowing good axle rotation.
I do agree anything more than 2" lift and the bushes are out of there range, but that's when drop boxes come into play.
As for the toyo setup, the arms will swing up and down all day, but as soon as the arm tries to rotate its very limited buy the Bush and pin.
It's like putting a bolt threw that pin and sleeve, that pin is only going to rotate as much as the slop (the Bush) allows.
I'm sure I'm wrong, but in my eyes the Nissan pin setup with drop box is a better setup.

True story!!

Looking a little worse for wear!!

Did a big drive over the weekend guys. Possibly the best Extreme trip I have done in the GQ. Not a Heap of mud which was a bonus. I did the same track and the Gates of Hell on previous pages but it was dryer. Much dryer. Had a great time and got to do some amazing tracks.

I have a heap f pics and will post some up later tonight when my phone is charged.

Thanks goes to Lights for leading this trip. It was mind blowing crazy on occasion and we did some tracks that were simply undrivable. Crazy stuff. Thanks Boz.

Headed into the Gates of Hell track after dark. Had done a couple of warmup tracks already.

On the winch soon enough

Had a great run through in both directions. Much dryer than last time and great fun. I had the gopro going and will see about some video for you.

Had winch trouble late Saturday night but was able to keep going.

41448

Had to Winch into camp Saturday night and broke my winch rope twice before abandoning the attempt and getting another GQ with a 24v HiMount to winch up and then winch me into camp with a disabled winch and No Locker.

My navi and lights spliced my rope on Sunday Morning while I fixed the locker and we winched back out of camp again!! Crazy stuff.

The 24v is a Priority and is getting sorted. Winnie is a great bloke and is helping me there.

The Tyres will have to wait a little while. Funds are bloody tight at the moment so on the back burner. The next set of tyres will be 37" Maxxis Treps though for sure! Just like on the 80 Comp truck on the pics. They ate the Simex 35" ETs all weekend.!!!

Well Winne came down the HWY on Saturday and we stripped out the second Alternator off his TD. We stripped off all the brackets and thermostat housing off my TD to revert Winnie's back to standard. All bolted up and Winnie is as good as new.

Winnie is a Generous guy!! He gifted me the dual setup and I sincerely appreciate it. Thanks bloke.

So my plan is to source a 24v alternator with the same mounts and setup an independent 24v system for the winch. Batteries in the rear footwells and loose the second battery under the bonnet and fit a bigger air of and stainless snorkel. Will be a while but that's the plan.

While removing the thermostat housing I broke the rear bolt damn it!! Winnie I drilled and tapped it yesterday and fitted an M10 Helicoil and jobs right. Power steering pump fitted and fan removed for further inspection and maybe I will buy another I think. She looks pretty average.

The Bracket is in place and ready for the alternator so may look around and see if i can find a 24v that is going to match the mounts and do the job once. Thanks again mate.

9th August 2014, 03:55 PM
Well she has been parked up for a little whole now and I am finally getting some time to start on the 24v conversion. Stripped both batteries out and going to use the 2 full river Gel batteries inside the car behind he passenger seat as the 24v bank and last weekend picked up a marine battery from autopro when they had 25% off batteries. Score! That is going in under the bonnet and removing the second battery there.

Everything has to be desired and ran to the single battery now so a bit of work there.

While it's co out and apart I am trying to sort out the collapsed inner guards which have split and fractured. Very common on the GQ and everyone should have a look.

Yeah it's very common in GQs, its from the weight of the battery sitting on the inner guard. I AMA fan of running an over strap across the top of the battery to the side to help take the weight.

The pic makes the splits not look bad but I had already jacked the inner guard up using the jack on the spring tower ready for welding, I probably jacked it 15to 20mm.

Everyone should have a good look at their inner guards. This is very common.

55amp. Should be plenty. The winching tends to be over faster, the motor does it easier and running 24v through a 12v motor produces less amps. Most of the guys I drive with are running 55 amps without a drama.

Love it mate. Nearly everyone I know that has a himount is running 24v through their 6hp 12v motors. Apparently there is a possibility of wearing out the brushes faster but there are no complaints.

Avoiding winching out and stopping the run-on by switching the opposite would not be pretty but the thing bloody fly mate and pull like a 14 year old. ;)

Ok been busy under the hood over the last month. I am getting a few things sorted while it's parked up. I am getting it ready for a bigger airbox and hopefully a stainless snorkel through the bonnet at some point.

I have moved the Fuel Primer pump and the vacuum tank to the drivers side and stripped a heap of other crap off the fire wall. I removed the clutch bleed hose and tube and replace the hose and block to allow for the removal of the extra bleed.

This is a Big Job and will take some nutting out to put Humpty Dumpty back together again but it's getting there

Before.

5211552116

Fuel primer now attached to drivers side battery tray just above the fuel pump. The copper fuel pines across the fire wall are gone.

521185211952120

I relocated the vacuum tank and used the copper tube as the primary supply to the tank rather than from the tank just to the clutch

5212152122

Getting there

5212352124

Stripped out the clutch bleed valve as it's pointless. Phill at the 4WD Shed sells a replacement hose and block without the bleed for the win.

52125

Removed the redundant dual battery solenoid and wiring and pulled back a few wires that were no longer being used.

I am going to move the fuse block and have to remount it and sort out al the accessories that were going to the second battery that no longer exists. A bit to do yet but it's coming together

BigRAWesty

Not bad. I've always wondered why the fuel comes down the drivers side, up across the fire wall to the filter then back over the firewall to the pump. Weird

BigRAWesty
30th November 2014, 07:53 AM
Also did you mold steel line to new positions or just run rubber hose?

MudRunnerTD
30th November 2014, 10:12 AM
Hi Kallen, yeah has always had me too. Just dumb. So the fuel lines come from the back along the right side in copper or steel. Then a rubber fuel line for about 300mm to another copper fuel line that goes across the rear fire wall to the passenger side and then rubber again the the primer pump. From there it's rubber back to another copper line across the fire wall to another rubber fuel line from there to the pump!!! Just a big loop of pointlessness!!!

I got a bracket of a later model GU that runs the primer on the drivers side, there was stuff in the way to fit in the same spot so I cut it up and made it fit off the battery tray. I then removed the big loop. The clutch bleed was worse!! All this massive loop of copper tube to nowhere!

When I have finished I will take a pic of the pile of crap I have stripped off!

The Vacuum on the drivers side makes so much sense too!! Really pleased with how it is coming together.

Mega you are right, just chipping away at it mate, tedious and time consuming. I have to complete each task as I go, there was just a rediculous amount of stuff finishing in that corner!!!

Yeah I had mine slightly in the way and gave them a gentle persuasion...

For me the issue is the cooling lines through the firewall hitting the dump pipe?

From what I have heard having the fuel filter on that side makes it a mile easier to bleed up the line.

Lol. I assume your talking aout the Himount winch. The first group of Himount winch pics would be in the first 10 pages I reckon depending on how many posts per page your set at. When I started the thread I was basically finished the car so rolled them all out quickly. The winch was done up first then.

I am currently rebuilding the winch again and have it out of the car and completely stripped down. Let me know what you want pics of and I will take a couple for you. The cases have just been painted and I have not reassembled it yet.

MudRunnerTD

Next got started on the winch. I pulled it to bits on the bench in the shed to give it a good clean out.

I used this link for a great writeup and how to ==> http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/

Then i went about renovating what needed to be done. I Painted the casing using a Charcoal Hammertone paint out of a can

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Stripping%20the%20GQ/GQ%20gauges%20and%20stuff/IMG_0467.jpg?t=1294270748

I tapped the casing to run Air lines to pressurise the case for Bog holes etc. You can see also that i used some of that PVC liquid tape on the terminals thinking that i could trim up the mess when dry => NO YOU CANT!!! so after this pic i went and got a very fine brush and neatened it up allot.

Hahaha. Yeah had a feeling you might have been. My turbo is a low mount and is a full MTQ system. I had it fitted by a shop though way back when. If your chasing pics and info on a Hi Mount Turbo setup your best to ask Bloody Aussie as he has just fitted one to his new TD.

Yea...
Sure......

Ay I was thinking the other day about your gearing issues with the gu and 35's.
Why not swap out the gq centres until the q is ready, or you buy replacements??
Or will 4.6 be to high??

Thank FARK for tappa!!! Been slack on this thread as I have struggled with pics until now.

Been a busy year, car has been parked up and have been sorting out my 24v for my winch. It's nearlly ready to go but while it's been parked I have also stripped out a heap of junk wiring. I have also made space for a 4" snorkel through the bonnet and big airbox in the future..

Some wiring mods.

Gone for a Custom made Big Mouth SS fairlead, you can now buy these on eBay, mine is the one in the pic as it was the first one he made in the bigger size. The big mouth will allow a Brocken plasma to have a knot tied in it and still got through the opening
