are the armadas the 6inch + size??

MudRunnerTD
11th January 2013, 12:42 PM
Now that I would pay good money to see!!!!

I was going to ask your advice on rear suspension as I am getting that saggy bottom and more to one side.. springs are not that old??? airbags... coil spacers.... heavier springs?????? what would you suggest!!!

Hey BA we might have a look at your car at the meetup and have a chat about it mate. see you in a week.

Keep us posted on how those shocks go, if they are any good I will be getting a set for the GQ. Awesome work mate. Sounds like its time for a twin motor 24v giggle pin air free spool setup for the ole wagon.

Shhhhhh...... Dont tell the missus ;) Seriously thinking of going 24v at a minimum. ;)

are the armadas the 6inch + size??

Hey Bene,

I have left it up to the guys at Superiors. While i am paying for the items i am well and truly "Being Looked after" and the fit up will be filmed for 4WDTV. they are already Marketing off this build up so i am giving them heaps of room to play. They are very aware of what i do with the car and have seen heaps of the pics i have posted here. We have weighed the car front and back on a Bridge and given them all the details. The pic above was sent to me i have not dribbled over them just yet. LOL

Note that there is a Spring Tower Brace there too. I found a 3" tare in the gusset before the last big trip and that has all been repaired and filmed in anticipation of this filming too.

Watch this space, I'll embed it all here and i will get you the open and closed lengths of those shocks when i get near them.

Cheers MR

Yeah this was a Chrissy present. I would have gone the Black for the extra too but beggers should be thankful ;)

I will buy the remote as this is the silver and is wifi ready. I spoke to the Camera store about the differences and he said basically the differences between the Silver and Black editions are at the highest end of the spectrums and No Domestic TV can even Read the highest setting of the Silver let alone the Black so the Black is really only needed for the guys doing the High End Documentarys and stuff for Cinema.

This is an insane bit of Kit for sure!!!! Can't wait to have a play with it.

Well I spent a few hours under the GQ last weekend with a little jimmy bar loosening up all the mud a d then pressure washed just the underside of the car. 4 hour job at least!

Yeah they are huge!!!

No I will repack the wheel bearings and replace the axle seals and I will be putting in the 4.6 centre and Airlocker currently in the GQ when I do the swap over. Hence stripping it down.

The front was basically brand new and the back looks nearly brand new too! Very pleased. The ratios are 3.9s so not allot of use to me but I have 3.9 s in the GIUV so may keep them as spares ( I shouldn't but might)

You can see in the last pic that the bearing is held in by a hub nut from behind the hub so the axle has to come out as i have stripped it to get that bearing out.

Its a GU diff housing. I have a pair of GU diffs going onto the GQ. Sick of smashing CVs. The GU CVs are much bigger and teh wheel track is also wider which is a Bonus! Oh Yeah! the Brakes on a GU are AWESOME!!! The GQ centres go straight in!

Biders 4WD did the bracing of the diff housing and it came up very tidy.

Hey Scottie,

Mate i have never stripped a rear diff before and did not refer to the manual. it was pretty basic. Once i have finished i might do a DIY thread for the rear diff and wheel bearings which will add to our wealth of knowledge here. BLOODY HEAVY though!!!

Hmmm? Not sure Ben. I think a 15 will fit. Only the 4.8 came out with the larger disk.

These have much bigger CVs and a wider track and twin pot brakes with much Thicker rotors. Paired with my braided brake lines and this is going to be wicked

righto. Do you know if 4.8 rotors will fit my h233b? If it can fit it means I can work other things into the budget

In its current form it hasnt done any long distance drives (+1000km in 1 hit), and if I am doing a trip to landcruiser park or something with alot of dirt road the ute isnt a very nice place to be.
Im trying to change the setup for the trip next year, so I have to start planning and saving for it now.

These are diffs off a 4.5 and will take my GQ centres in 4.6s no trouble at all. Straight bolt in. If you grabbed a set off a zd30 you'd get 4.3 centres and your lockers would go straight in. I assume your running 4.6s already though? Although your rock hoppers would probably mean some 4.3s would be sweet.

Is it only the Ute Cab that is your issue?

Sweet I will see what I can find. The compliance plate says I have 4.1's and I havnt changed them.

The cab is part of the issue due to its size, but the ride is rigid, poor spring and shock choice (although just got back from the first drive with the kings see other thread) and after a while on a dirt road its like I am running leaf springs, its terrible. The base of the recaros have seen better days and need to be beefed up, they'll break your spine after about 6 hours lol
I'll have it all sorted by next year for meetup in the middle.

Then chase some GU zd30'diffs and you will get some 4.3s. The GUIV TD42 ran 3.9s so don't think you want to do that. Not sure about the 4.5s although these ones have 3.9s in them. Regardless your 3rd member will just go straight in as a carrier so no big deal.

Sounds like your setup was wrong. I had the 12 stage Boss and hated them.! Your kings will transform the car. You might look at increasing the pressure for the Meetup touring trip then drop the pressure again when you get home for playing.

Your running an empty tray most of the time though hey? Loaded for touring will make a difference to mate.

The A Tie Rod on a GU is 1300mm c/c of the tie rod pins. A GQ is 1270mm c/c

27666

The Tie rod end on a GU is Longer than a GQ physically and the actual Rod is the same length ;)

Well been doing a bit to the GQ over the last few weeks /months and here is a bit.

So my viscous fan gave up the ghost while playing in the mud a d Nissan want a second mortgage for one so time to rebuild this one.

Took it off, removed the fan and cracked the casing

288402884128842288432884428845

So you can see inside that there is a clear silicon oil in there and as I understand it th fan hub needs to be refilled with oil. The right oil!

There is only one place that sells it over the counter and entering the lions den was required!

28846288472884828849

I bought 2 tubes and filled the fan with 1 tube and have refitted it and will see how it goes

I have yet to see any proof from anyone that the original fan can't be beaten for airflow from thermo's

Mine does heat up when sitting in long stop start traffic or a hard hill climb but considering I have one core blocked in my radiator and I don't have a decent shroud around my thermo's either, I'm sure there doing there job.

Unlike originals, thermo's keep cooling the radiator down after you switch the motor off and you can switch them off while going through water crossings as well.

I think there is more positives to thermo's than people are lead to believe

Yeah I will see how it welds up. I think it was the lack of back bracing of the housing at that point. If you look at the front bracing going to the point of mounting you can see its all about the front.

Brett will sort out some better bracing in there and it should repair up fine.

Hi Kallen,

Same size lift just way way better! Can't believe how it feels on the road. So much more planted. There is about 50 acres of vacant land behind 4wdObsession and we took it for a burl on a rough track and it felt great.

No flex shots yet but very pleased.

Nah not at all Todd,

They are pretty well identical to fit to any shock, these just have the remote canister (the key to performance) thqt you ahve to also mount. THe kit comes with the bracketry and you just need to bolt it up. THe back one i have Zip Tied to the chassis Cross member on top of teh fuel tank. All good.

They are awesome.

The rear shock tower brace is a separate job and was a bit of a bitch but relatively straight forward and will make a massive difference. I had Torn the left side half of the chassis!

What was the rear shock brace worth? I have the body of mine at the moment so if it worth doing it would be pretty easy to do right now.

Is it required only with big lift or is it something just worth doing

Nah worth doing regardless mate. It is a weak point in a Nissan, especially if your car sees allot of corrugations or jumps and or heavy loads.

Jump on the superiors site in the link on the previous page I think, I think it was $120 or something! Great value I think. They say you need a body lift to fit it, not sure if that's just to make it fittable or it needs the space. If you have the body off then give them a bell and they will guide you. They do a bolt on kit but that is upwards of $400 and I am thinking of putting it on the GUIv

Yeah the idea is that the Tower Caps are already welded to the side of the chassis and rely on the gussets welded to the side of the chassis rail to hold down the tower cap and therefore add a heap of shear force to those welds.

By installing either to top brace as I have or the bolt on kit you are relieving the welds and supporting the tower caps from th e outer edge and reducing the counterlever shear force. The tower brace featured here completely relieves the counter leave and turns it into a spanning element.

Really impressed with both concepts to be honest! Props to Superior Engineering.

Like the look of that rear spring mount brace. When you say that version is only suited for patrols with a body lift, is that only for fitting purposes? I suppose if one was to fit one without a body lift could possibly undo the body mounts to gain a little lift to pop the bolts in.
Is there any drilling necessary?

I'd say from looking at mine when I was putting the cab back on that it will foul on the body.

There is a bolt on brace on their website for patrols without body lift but it is 450 odd bucks compared to the 120 of the one used here.

Yeah i think that it would be very difficult to fit without a body mount. Also the top mount of the shocks foul with the brace in position when you try to fit or remove the shocks. Damn it! If you want to swap out your shocks then the brace needs to be undone and lifted to allow for the shocks to be removed. Head Up.

I think the bolt on $450 kit is actually really good value for what it is! Allot of Engineering R&D went into making that one. When i have the cash i will be fitting one to the GUIV for sure.

No rust.

It is the counterlever design of the spring tower on the GQ and the GU. A known weak spot. Superior do a top of tower brace kit as per the previous pages of this build and also to a Bolt In kit for the GU and GQs without a BodyLift.

I know many people that have experienced this tear. Very common in heavily loaded touring rigs that have seen allot of corrugated roads too.

Everyone should check their rear towers and keep an eye on them.

Yeah it's a bit tricky Brando, I might jack the car up on the weekend and sit the tyre down onto this bump stop and see how much it compresses before fitting them.

The Amadas are the third set of shocks into the back of this car after destroying the rear shocks twice with no bump stop mod.

The Amadas are expensive and I need to get this right.

Do you know how much they compress?
